View Full Version : Virtumonde (possibly others as well?) - Please help

According to AdAware and at least one other antivirus program, we've got Virtumonde on my wife's computer, apparently along with Adload_r.EQ , Generic12.APRX , and Generic12.AOVJ according to AVG Antivirus (Free edition).

We've already lost nearly a week trying to get rid of this, so any help will be very much appreciated. We've tried running the Microsoft malware remover (downloaded directly from their site) with obviously no solution. Symptoms include VERY slow internet loading, inability to do Microsoft Updates despite all their "fix" suggestions followed, and many pop-ups advertising various things. Following is the HJT log. Thanks!

Hi crs01

Rename HijackThis.exe to crs01.exe and post back a fresh HijackThis log, please :)

crs01
2009-01-16, 01:12
Note: I've changed the name of part of the path on the last line of the first section of the log below. Here is what the new line looks like:

C:\Documents and Settings\[name deleted]\Desktop\HiJackThis.exe

The [name deleted] portion simply replaces a personal name for privacy reasons. I presume that change will not affect this fix - the line is otherwise as it exists in the new HJT log. If for any reason you need the exact line, I can repost it, but would prefer not to if not necessary.

I look forward to your reply. Thank you.

Move HijackThis.exe to own folder in desktop.

After that:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/whatnext.png

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

I really appreciate your help on this. Thank you very much. I'll be back home tonight after 4:00 p.m. Eastern time so there will be no more responses from me before then.

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

http://img.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/hijackthis/uninstall-man.jpg

5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Uninstall via add/remove programs:

ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker Toolbar

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Folder::
c:\program files\AskBarDis

Driver::
ASKService

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar]
"{3041d03e-fd4b-44e0-b742-2d9b88305f98}"=-

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\clsid\{3041d03e-fd4b-44e0-b742-2d9b88305f98}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{4b1c1e16-6b34-430e-b074-5928eca4c150}]

Save this as "CFScript"

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

NOTES:
1. When ComboFix started, it gave the option to update to a new version. I selected that option, and it appears the CFScript was run. However, if it did not give a correct result, I can rerun it.

2. When we're done, I presume you will tell me which (if any) programs need to be uninstalled and then reinstalled with a clean new copy (antivirus, spy blocker, firewall, etc.). Any recommendations about those three will be appreciated - free is nice, but a better protected computer is better, so we're not locked into free software.

3. Was ZoneAlarm corrupted by the malware, or was it a problem as installed?

Again, thank you very much for your assistance.

1. OK, that sounds normal.

2. Yes, I will :)

3. No, but ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker Toolbar is bad, also known as Ask Toolbar.

Please post back also a fresh HijackThis log.

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

When it's finished, will it automatically remove the threats and infected items? If not, will I have that option, and should I select it or just send the log without modifying anything? (It's still got almost another hour to go, if the % complete is accurate.)

One other question: do you have the capability of editing a piece of information in one of my posts? The forum doesn't allow us to modify our own. If you can and are willing to, I'll let you know what I'd appreciate being changed through a PM if that's acceptable.

We will remove things according to log later if needed.

Yes I can your posts if needed :)

Finished faster than I expected! Obviously my question about the scanner was answered - there was no option to clean the computer, so here's the log along with a HJT log.

I'm very curious about the Magic Jellybean Finder. I've had that in my computer for several years after getting it from the owner of a fairly large local networking company. I just recently installed it in my wife's computer. All it's SUPPOSED to do is show the Windows Operating System product key in case it's lost (I lost mine a few years ago). Do you know if that really is a problem or not? Nothing else has ever identified it as a problem before.

Yes it does just that. Kaspersky flags it because it finds passwords/product keys and that kind of program can be abused. That program you have is fine.

Empty this folder:

C:\Qoobox\Quarantine

Empty Recycle Bin.

Still problems?

I deleted the contents of the Quarantine folder, but left everything else in the
C:\Qoobox main folder (including the empty quarantine folder, since the instructions were only to empty that folder).

The browser is MUCH faster. Since one of the other symptoms was the inability to do a Windows update, I then went to Automatic Update in the Control Panel and got an error message that it couldn't find a "null" file (that's just from my memory - I did not copy the full message but can attempt to run it again if you need it).

However, I went directly to Microsoft.com and the automatic update worked just fine (it's still installing the two downloaded updates on her computer as I type).

So other than being unable to update through the control panel, everything appears to be working fine.

crs01

Recycle bin was also emptied - sorry I didn't specify that I'd completed that.

Hmmmm. I just discovered something else about Automatic Update. The icon in the Systray is still red because I don't have a firewall or antivirus software currently working, but Automatic Updates is "On" and green. However, when I right-click the Systray icon and select the option to go to the Microsoft Security web site, all I get is an IE window that shows "Connecting..." but nothing happens.

Also, the error message when I try to run Automatic Updates from Control Panel is:

Windows cannot find '(null)'. Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again. To search for a file ... [etc.]

Ideas? Was Virtumonde so "good" that it modified paths in the routines or scripts associated with Automatic Update? If so, how can I correct that?

Let's try this:

Download to your Desktop FixPolicies.exe, a self-extracting ZIP archive from here: http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/BillCastner/FixPolicies.exe

* Double-click FixPolicies.exe.
* Click the "Install" button on the bottom toolbar of the box that will open.
* The program will create a new Folder called FixPolicies.
* Double-click to Open the new Folder, and then double-click the file within: Fix_Policies.cmd.
* A black box will briefly appear and then close.

Done. I have not rebooted yet since I don't know if that will interrupt anything you're having me do. However, I right-clicked on the Systray icon for Windows Security Alerts, and as long as I have Firefox open, it now works - sort of. If I have Firefox open, it gives the usual "thank you" message for using Windows Updates, but specifies the need for IE5 or higher (I think it was) and says if I want to use Firefox, I'll have to do it manually. The same happens through Control Panel.

When I closed Firefox with nothing else running and re-tried the above, I just got the IE "connecting..." window again with the "null" error message. Certainly I can to manual updates, but with it being my wife's computer, I'd especially like to have the Automatic Update feature working properly (I'm assuming that if an update comes along, even though it shows "ON" it will probably give the same error message and "connecting...."

Will rebooting fix this, or ....?

Please see here (http://windowsxp.mvps.org/aupolicy.htm) next.

Do not make yet any changes, just let me know if those values are present.

The value in the registry for both the HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE automatic updates is:

Name: [ab] (Default)
Type: REG_SZ
Data: (Value not set)

Also, is the following a problem? When I followed the HKEY_CURRENT_USER path I just happened to notice an entry for KAZAA as I was scrolling down to Windows Update. We have never knowingly installed that. I just happened to see it and knew it was a file sharing program. The value for KAZAA was the same as in the correct entries (above) for Windows Update (i.e. Default REG_SZ and Value not set). Hopefully that's just left-over "junk" from the cleanup yesterday, but I wanted to make sure by asking.

I won't be back home until around 2:00 Eastern (9:00 pm your time, I think) tonight.

Thanks.

It is a leftover, yes.

FIXED! You aren't going to believe what the problem was and how simple it was to fix. In the link you sent me, I went through Methods 1 through 4 of the Resolutions successfully. I felt uncomfortable going into the registry and changing binary data, and certainly wasn't at the point of trying to do a reinstall of Windows at this point. So I went back and - on a guess - checked to see if I could get to updates via either the Systray icon or Control Panel. It turns out that if Internet Explorer isn't selected as the default browser, those two methods of updating Windows won't work, and will produce the "null" reference in an error window. I changed IE to be my default browser briefly, and the problem was solved. Not bad for an amateur, huh? ;) (now back to Firefox)

With that, it appears my wife's computer is working very well. I've installed Comodo (in place of ZoneAlarm) firewall, done some net surfing, and haven't gotten a single popup window. Pages are loading at a nice speed, and we've got Windows Update back. To my knowledge, those were the only problems we could see in the foreground. What happened in the background during the infection, of course I have no idea.

I'll let you tell me for sure if we're done, but if so, I'd still appreciate any recommendations on an antivirus program. Free is nice, but a safe system is more important. We've been using AVG (free), but it never recognized Virtumonde, so I'm not as confident in it as I used to be. Also, we've been using AdAware (which alerted us to the Virtumonde). Is that adequate? Any other recommendations on spyware programs?

Also, is there any way we can thank you with more than just words for all your volunteered time? That kind of service, for free, to total strangers, is appreciated beyond what words can express.

Finally, I'm just curious - was the installation of Kazaa part of what Virtumonde accomplishes?

Thank you again, very sincerely.

AVG Free is fine, no antivirus can find all threats. As for other recommendations, I will come to those in a bit.

"Also, is there any way we can thank you with more than just words for all your volunteered time? That kind of service, for free, to total strangers, is appreciated beyond what words can express."

This (http://www.spybot.info/en/donate/index.html) is a good way if you feel so :)

"Finally, I'm just curious - was the installation of Kazaa part of what Virtumonde accomplishes?"

No, those are two very different things.

You can delete that KAZAA key from under HKEY_CURRENT_USER

Still some issues left?

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer. See also a hosts file tutorial here (http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22187)
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

I'm in the process of completing all the "clean-up" and future protection items. Thank you again very much. There will be PayPal donation later today also. My wife asked me to say a special thank you from her, too. Hope you have a very happy and peaceful new year. :)
