Hello -
Regrettably it appears that I am another virtumonde infectee. TeaTimer gave me a notice about a winlogon notifier registry change called efcBrqpm, which sounded pretty suspicious. So I ran Spybot S&D, and it found several virtumonde artifacts as well as a smitfraud problem.

The first time, it interrupted the scan with the suggestion to restart before continuing. So I clicked Yes, stopped the scan, fixed the detected problems, and restarted. Spybot started up again immediately on restart, and when it concluded, it found more (same?) virtumonde and smitfraud problems (11 of them). I fixed them, and then ran the scan once more. This third time, I had the idea of unplugging the ethernet cable midway through the scan, just in case these malwares were "phoning home." By that time, 6 problems had already been found, but after unplugging, no further problems were found in the remainder of the scan, and there were none listed for smitfraud. So I had S&D fix those 6 problems. Since these were recurring, and before proceeding further, I thought it may be best to ask for more expertise. The following is an HJT log, conducted in safe mode with TeaTimer disabled and also my McAfee disabled (I think!).

I would be very grateful for assistance, and I will try to follow instructions explicitly. Thanks in advance!

Hi pomaikai

Please post next a fresh HijackThis log taken in normal mode :)

Some other comments/observations in case they help. These may not be relevant, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to mention the following.

When I ran HijackThis to generate the first log I posted, it encountered a problem in the process of generating the log. I did not make a note of any details given about the problem. Also, it wanted to send information about the problem over the Internet, but was unable to because I still had the ethernet cable unplugged. So it completed, and gave me the log I posted. If it happens again, I can make a note of any details given. But it didn't happen just now when I made an HJT log in normal mode.

The computer has been literally turned off since I posted the first HJT log. So, there hasn't been much opportunity to see any odd behavior. However, I did see the following irregularities...

- On shutdown/restart, Windows gave a message about explorer.exe not responding. This repeated even if I selected "End now". I believe I had to push the hardware power button on the computer to actually shutdown that time. Today it gave the same message, but this time it allowed me to "End now".

- After restart, a red Windows update icon appeared on the taskbar with the popup warning that Windows updates were disabled. I had done nothing to enter that state. I did not investigate the Windows update thing further as I don't really trust anything until I get the virtumonde stuff cleaned up. Just speculating, the only thing that seems related is the original TeaTimer notification of a winlogon notifier registry change by "efcBrqpm". BTW, I rejected that registry change in the TeaTimer notification, and was prompted about it again many times, until I finally noticed the "remember this decision" checkbox which made the rejection stick.

- On shutdown/restart, I also got a message about gearsec.exe not responding. This has happened in the past though, so it's probably unrelated. I think one time I tried to track down what that was, and had found it unnecessary and tried to disable it. But I think ultimately I left it alone.

- One other unrelated thing FYI - I was trying to get a Creative registration app called CTRegRun.exe off my machine a couple weeks ago. It's an irritating little thing that I can only close by literally killing the process (even killing the task doesn't do it). Uninstalling the SW didn't remove it, so I went into msconfig to uncheck it on the Startup tab. I thought I've done that before for other unnecessary startup stuff, but for some reason after this time, Windows always brings up a prompt on startup asking if I really want Selective Startup. I ended up going back to Normal Startup to avoid the prompt, but still want to find a way to get rid of CTRegRun.

Anyway, with all that (unnecessary?) info, here's the HJT log in normal mode. Thanks for looking!

This is virtumonde related issue, hard to say about the rest for sure:

"- After restart, a red Windows update icon appeared on the taskbar with the popup warning that Windows updates were disabled. BTW, I rejected that registry change in the TeaTimer notification, and was prompted about it again many times, until I finally noticed the "remember this decision" checkbox which made the rejection stick."

Rename HijackThis.exe to pomaikai.exe by doing the following;

Navigate here using Windows Explorer (windows button + E) or My Computer -> Local Disk C: -> C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
Right-click on the HijackThis.exe
Choose from the pull-down menu; "Rename"
And now Rename HijackThis.exe to pomaikai.exe
When you've renamed HijackThis, open HijackThis again.
Take a fresh HijackThis log (click Do a system scan and save a log file)
Post the fresh HijackThis log here.

Hi again,
Thanks for the quick reply! Sorry I was not as quick to reply back while at work today. BTW, I'm located in California.

Here is the log generated just now with the renamed HJT executable...

We will begin with ComboFix.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/whatnext.png

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

pomaikai

The logs are prepared below. Some more notes..

I had TeaTimer disabled but not SDHelper. Since you said anti-spyware stuff, I disabled SDHelper too before running ComboFix.

I disabled McAfee VirusScan in the system tray, but it's a little hard to tell if everything that should be disabled, is disabled, since there are still so many mcafee processes listed: mcdetect, mcshield, mctskshd, mcagent, mcvsshld, oasclnt, mcvsescn, mcvsftsn. Sheesh!

When ComboFix restarted the computer, it said not to run anything else, but then two startup popups came up. One is the CTRegRun thing again, which comes up every time. The other was a McAfee popup saying, "Select your Security Center", which asked if McAfee should be the default. It warned me that if I say no, enable Windows SecurityCenter. ComboFix seemed to be paused. I waited for a while, then clicked yes on the McAfee dialog, and then the ComboFix stuff finished.

After the ComboFix log was done, I took CTRegRun out of the startup list in msconfig again.

When I ran the pomaikai named HJT, I got an error message again, as follows:

An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modRegistry_IniGetString(sFile=system.ini, sSection=boot, sValue=shell)
Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument

Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version: 6.0.2900.5512
HijackThis version: 2.0.2

OK, with all that said, here are the ComboFix and HJT logs below. Thanks!

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::
c:\windows\SYSTEM32\urqPjGaW.dll
c:\windows\Tasks\kqplicud.job

Driver::
AQHVSKURT

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"Authentication Packages"=hex(7):6d,73,76,31,5f,30,00,00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]

Save this as "CFScript"

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

The two logs follow below.

Just for reference... Same McAfee startup question again for SecurityCenter, and same HJT error again from the "pomaikai" HJT. I'm leaving that computer disconnected from the Internet, so I cannot send the info about the error notice to HJT. Also, an Internet Explorer icon was added to the desktop after the first ComboFix run.

Thanks!

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need a tutorial, see here (http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/Bleeping/KAS/KAS9.gif)

Hi, here's the latest.

Again, quick observations... When Kaspersky was updating the database, I received a Windows popup message saying that Windows Firewall was blocking some activity by Internet Explorer. I clicked the button to Unblock. Also, no HJT error this time. Maybe it only has the error when the computer is disconnected from the Internet, I'm not sure. Anyway, the Internet was connected this time, since I needed it for the Kaspersky scan.

Here are the Kaspersky and HJT logs (still using the renamed HJT executable)...

Also FYI, when I shutdown the machine after those last scans, it gave the normal Windows prompt to install updates and shutdown, or to just shutdown. I did just the shutdown for now, but anyway, it seemed like a good sign.

Thanks again for the help so far!

Yes that sounds like normal to me.

Logs are fine.

Still some issues left?

It doesn't seem to be having problems, but I haven't been using that machine other than to perform tasks to clean it up (no web browsing, etc.). With the clean logs from Kaspersky and HJT, do you think it's safe to start using that machine again?

The "Explorer not responding" messages on shutdown seem to be gone. Other than that, I think the CTRegRun.exe and gearsec.exe things are not malware related, since they were irritants before the virtumonde thing appeared. I'm planning to try to clean up some unnecessary startup stuff. I noticed Spybot has a utility for this as well as msconfig - do you know if it makes any difference?

I suppose I'd re-enable Spybot and TeaTimer, and also the virus scanning. I was thinking I'd swap out McAfee for a different virus scanner - Antivir and AVG seem to get good comments here.

In terms of prevention, are you aware of whether any of these tools would have caught virtumonde before it was allowed on the computer?

Thanks again for your extremely generous help, and I plan to make a donation.

"I noticed Spybot has a utility for this as well as msconfig - do you know if it makes any difference?"

Spybot one is good to use - WinPatrol has also function for that, see below.

"In terms of prevention, are you aware of whether any of these tools would have caught virtumonde before it was allowed on the computer?"

WinPatrol might be able to catch it beforehand.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Please download JavaRa (http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=javara&filename=JavaRa.zip&use_mirror=osdn) and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***

Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of a third party firewall.

As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

1) Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html) (Uncheck during installation "Install COMODO Antivirus (Recommended)"!, "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage")
2) Online Armor (http://www.tallemu.com/online_armor_free.html)
3) PC Tools (http://www.pctools.com/firewall/download/)
4) Sunbelt/Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm)
5) ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=nav_za) (uncheck ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker during installation if you choose this one)

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTCleanIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTCleanIt.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your AntiVirus Software and keep your other programs up-to-date Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/software_inspector/)
F-secure Health Check (http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00001356.html)

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found below:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide (http://www.bfccomputers.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1644)

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer. See also a hosts file tutorial here (http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22187)
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.
