View Full Version : Virtumonde Please Help

Hi, I have a real bad case of Virtumonde. I noticed it when I suddenly got a message that the firewall was off and then all hell broke loose.

I have managed to run S&D a few times but without success. I am now really struggling with the computer – it does not want to start the desktop loses all the icons (as does the system tray) as if it is about to restart. It then freezes or I get the blue screen.

I did manage to install and run HJT and attach the log file below.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Mike

Sorry, did not read the instructions properly. Below is the HJT log without tea timer running. I have had to run in safe mode as it is too unstable in normal mode - explorer keeps stopping starting then freezing.

Thanks in advance.

Hello mikeatk and welcome to the forums.
Sorry for the wait.

Please try to avoid safe mode with networking as your antivirus/firewall aren't running in that mode making you vulnerable. You should use the standard safe mode and then copy logs to eg memory stick and then post from another computer if possible.

Okay we'll start with this:

Rename HijackThis.exe to skanneri.exe by doing the following;

Create a new folder to the desktop named HijackThis.
Copy & paste HiJackThis.exe file into the folder.

Right-click on the HijackThis.exe
Choose from the pull-down menu; "Rename"
And now Rename HijackThis.exe to skanneri.exe
When you've renamed HijackThis, open HijackThis again.
Take a fresh HijackThis log (click Do a system scan and save a log file)
Post the fresh HijackThis log here.

Hi Mr Jak, thanks so much for getting back to me, I can see how busy it is in here.

I have realised that it was explorer that was making the computer freeze all the time in normal mode so I can manually disable it and run programmes and move stuff around using the task manager.

I have other computers to transfer files / programmes etc to and from and can run the infected machine with the router unplugged so it cannot get on the internet.

I have carried out your instructions in both normal and safe modes just in case that helps.

Many thanks

Mike

Okay there is something that we'll get rid of.

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review along with a fresh HijackThis log.

It was abit of a struggle to disable the anti virus - I think its the basic McAffee 8 but it could not be closed from the system tray and there did not seem to be any "disable" options in the menu. Instructions did also not seem be be at the combofix site for that particular anti virus software.

I killed all of the processes associated with it through the task manager and the machine does now say there is no antivirus software running.

Computer seems stable although I have not allowed it ineternet access. I did a fresh S&D scan it came back clean.

Hi and sorry for the delay.
Okay you have some nasty infections there.

I must warn you that one or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451)

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063)

We can attempt to clean this machine but i can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post :bigthumb:

Hi and thanks for the reply.

As far as the machine is concerned I have not allowed it access to any network or modem since soon after it started to play up.

In terms of ID theft changing passwords on email will be done. I am fairly certain that the machine has only become seriously infected in the last couple of weeks and am sure that no credit card info or payments through pay pal etc have been done. I have checked my pay pal transactions and they are fine and I have changed passwords.

The computer does have a bank account programme running but this uses an installed programme rather than the internet and has a separate security device to input / output 8 digit codes for both logon and payments so I am happy that this is safe.

Bearing all that in mind I think I would like to try and remove the Trojans and be careful with it from there. Fortunately it is not my main computer.

One question that you may or may not be able to answer relates to the files (excel / word etc). Do you think that individual files could also be carrying the Trojan?

Many thanks for you help in all these matters, I really appreciate it.

Mike

Hello :)

Okay let's get you cleaned...

Excel, text, picture and music files should be safe.

----------------

Download the tools needed to a flash drive or other removable media, and transfer them to the infected computer.

With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have the Windows Recovery Console pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/KB310994.gif

Download the file & save it as it's originally named.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Transfer all files you just downloaded, to the desktop of the infected computer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC1-4.gif

Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.

Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/whatnext.png

At the next prompt, click 'No' to run the full ComboFix scan.

Now.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=44192

Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*) in the same location as ComboFix.exe

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Hi Mr Jak,

Here is the log as requested.

One issue I did have is when I plugged the flash drive into the other computer to transfer the log my BullGuard anti virus said it had found a trojan in Combofix???

I have always run Combofix from the other machine not the flash drive so am a bit confused.

Hiya :)
Looks quite good now.

I would like you to help me. Please follow the following instructions to submit a few files for further research.

Please download the Suspicious file Packer (http://www.safer-networking.org/files/sfp.zip) from Safer-Networking.Org and unzip it to your desktop.

Run SFP.exe.

Please copy the following lines into the Step 1: Paste Text window:

C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\boodikub.sys.vir

then click "Continue".

This will create a .cab file on your desktop named requested-files[Date/Time].cab

Please go to this forum (http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/)
There's no need to register. Just start a new topic, titled "Files for Mr_JAk3" to the Uploads section
Copy the link of this topic to the message.

Use the Attachment box to upload the cab file from your desktop.

NOTE: You will not see the files that have been uploaded (including the ones you upload yourself) as they only show to the authorised users who can download them

Thank you

Then please let me know how the computer is running :bigthumb:

Hi Mr Jak3,

I have uploaded the CAB file as requested.

I am trying not to use the machine until we think it is relatively safe to do so.

It is stable though, the only thing I cannot do is make the virus system turn on automatically (VirusScan Enterprise 8.0.0). Even though I select the enable auto scan when it starts at each restart it has switched itself back off???

Thanks for your continuing help in all this

Hi :)

Okay I have received the file and passed it on for further analysis, thank you :bigthumb:

Looks good now.

One leftover..
Run HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and check the box next to each of these entries if still present. Close all other windows and press Fix checked. If something isn't there, please continue with the next entry in the list.

Let's not remove any backups/tools yet, I want to wait for the results of that one file.

But since it is looking clean now...

Your McAfee doesn't seem to include a firewall, it would be best to have a third-party firewall (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=56#56) installed. You must install one firewall.
It is possible that you're using the Windows XP firewall. That is of course better than nothing but I recommend that you install a more advanced firewall that gives more protection. Windows firewall doesn't eg protect your computer from inbound threats. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time. I'll give you a few alternatives if you want to install a third-party firewall:

These are good (free) firewalls: Sunbelt-Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm)
ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/)
Sygate (http://http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3356)
Outpost (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1056)
Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Install SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.

Install MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
This prevents your computer from connecting to harmful sites.

Use Firefox browser (http://www.mozilla.org)
Firefox is faster, safer and better browser than Internet Explorer.

Keep your system up-to-date (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)
Visit Windows Update regularly.

Keep your antivirus and firewall up-to-date
Scan your computer regularly with your antivirus.

Read this article by TonyKlein (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279)
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Stand Up and Be Counted ! (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php)
The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

I'll get back to you when I have some results on the file, then we can remove backups/tools used :bigthumb:

It is stable though, the only thing I cannot do is make the virus system turn on automatically (VirusScan Enterprise 8.0.0). Even though I select the enable auto scan when it starts at each restart it has switched itself back off???Hmm are you sure that you have saved the setting?

Ok Mr Jak3 will do.

Thanks for the heads up for some firewall advice, you were right I was only using the windows one.

Now that the machine is more stable I will investigate the anti-virus software issue.

Look forward to hearing from you re the backup tools.

Thanks again for all your help.:beerbeerb:

Hiya :)

OK, I've got the results of the file, it was bad and it is now gone :)

If there are no problems - we'll remove all used tools.

Please download OTCleanIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTCleanIt.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

* Click START then RUN
* Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

You may uninstall MBAM via Control Panel

Clear your system restore (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx)
This will clear the system restore folders from possible malware that was left behind during the cleaning process.

So computer has been running ok now?

mikeatk
2009-01-30, 17:44
Hi Mr Jak3,

Ok done what you said (although I think that OTCleanIt removed Combofix as I could not locate it to uninstall it).

Sorted out the Virus Scan at start up issue - I think I stopped a process when I couldn't run explorer that managed the antivirus software so although it was set to start up automatically there was something not running in the background which I have now fixed using the Services.msc thing.

Computer seems to be running fine, no freezes or popups although I am tending not to use it too much!

I think though things are sorted now and I have XP SP3 waiting to be installed - should I go for that??

Thanks again for all your help.:2thumb:

Hiya :)

That's great news.

Yes you should definately install SP3 and all the other updates from Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)

Nice that we were able to help :)

Ok Mr Jak3 will do, I will try and be more carefull in future:)
