SpybotQuerier Virtumonde problem

Hi,

Below is the HJT log on my apparently infected PC.

Some relevant facts:

1) After running MalwareBytes, SpyBot is returning no problems, in contrast to a couple of days ago.

2) Webroot AntiVirus & AntiSpyware still reports an occurrence of Virtuemonde.

3) PCTools' Spyware Doctor still reports an occurrence.

4) The last scan of MalwareBytes reported no occurrences. Another scan is running right now.

5) I'm generally keeping the PC offline. But this morning, I temporarily connected to the Web, in order to update virus & spyware definitions.

5a) Also this morning, the New Hardware Wizard for some 'unknown' device popped up. I thought it might be because a USB port was temporarily disconnected, and a device reconnected in a different port. But after letter the Hardware Wizard search online for drivers, Webroot started reporting several blockages of various sites. When the system started slowing down - either for some unknown reason, or maybe because virus definitions were being updated in the background - I disconnected it.

All of the scans from this afternoon have returned negative on Virtumonde.

It looks like SUPERAntiSpyware Pro did the trick. The 15-day trial version caught loads of problems, including (apparently) all of the remaining symptoms of Virtumonde.

I'm hesitant to say everything's ok, and that everyone should download SUPERAntiSpyware Pro, especially since all of our circumstances are different. However, after monitoring tonight to see if this stroke of good fortune holds, I'll let the forum know that the above-mentioned software is a good candidate for an anti-Virtumonde tool.

It worked, there seem to be no further occurrences of Virtumonde.

FYI, MalwareBytes was able to get the PC to the point where Spybot reported no problems, but other scanners still reported an infection. SUPERAntiSpyware Pro was able to complete the cleanup.

In both cases (Malware & Super), they were run in SAFE mode.


If anyone decides to attempt the perform the same steps, please backup your important data first. The source of your infection, and your circumstances, might be completely different from mine.

Or - just post your problem and log out there, and wait for a response.



From here, after moving folders of lots of home pictures over to an external hard drive, I'll do an Acronis backup of the desktop. Unfortunately, I was smart enough to Acronis my laptop, but too stupid to purchase a copy for the desktop.

Good luck to anyone else out there, all frustrated and not knowing whether they will succeed in their cleanup quest. Virtumonde is a tough one.
