View Full Version : Win32.Bagle.Hi and another Rootkit?

My laptop seems infected with win32.Bagel.hi
Thinkpad with Win XP SP3
This was yesterday, 1/16/2009.

I noticed significant slowdown on my machine, so I looked at Task Manager; I saw 2 copies of winupgro.exe running. I didn't recognize it, so I killed it. Then I disconnected the network cable, disabled wireless networking through the physical switch on the laptop. I tried to reboot to Safe Mode but got BSD. I rebooted to last known good configuration and killed a bunch of processes that I don't normally see. I ran Spybot 1.6 which recognized Win32.Bagel.Hi and removed it. Then I ran Symantec Antivirus (already updated on 1/16/2009) which showed 2 infections of a Rootkit in Symantec's own directory hierarchy and Quarantined them. (not Win32.Bagek.Hi)

I searched for winupgro.exe and found it at C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\drivers. There were a bunch of suspicious files in a subdirectory downld. I was able to rename the directory to downld_aaa and the files to srosa2.sys_aaa and winupgro.exe_aaa I am including the directory listing below. I downloaded a new copy of Hijack This through a link in "Read Before Posting," renamed it to BabyNames.exe and ran it; the log is attached below. Note that very early on I killed a bunch of processes and have not rebooted the machine since. The machine is still not on the network either. I am using a different PC and using a USB stick to transfer HJT, log etc back and forth.

I downloaded an Avira AntiVirus Rescue Disc which is a bootable CD with their virus definitions from 1/16/2009. It is supposed to provide a clean boot, scan and removal. Have not used it yet.

(Q1) Am I infected? Should I reboot and get a new HJT log?
(Q2) Should I delete the C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\drivers and contents? (Before or after rebooting)?
(Q3) Should I boot to the Avira AntiVirus Rescue Disc?
(Q4) I have a copies of BartCD (bootable Windows XP Preinstallation environment) on a bootable CD as well as a bootable USB stick, if they will be of help.

The suspicious directory listing and the HJT log follow.

Hi

Yes, it's Bagle there. This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451)
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063)

However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your computer and would like me to attempt to clean it, I will be happy to do so.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.
