View Full Version : adware troubles - gamevance

I've come close throwing my computer into the nearest river but it would only skip off the ice and probably poke someone's eye out thus compounding my angst. I accidentally invited gamevance into our lives and I tried to rid it right away but no luck. Our computer is getting slower by the minute.

I've tried search and destroy, spyware doctor, malwarebytes, and revo uninstaller. I'm at a loss. Any help would greatly appreciated.

Thanks much,
Andy

Hi

Seems like you posted old hjt log. To get a fresh one in Vista right click HijackThis.exe file and select 'run as administrator'. Then create a log as you did before and post it back here. What are the symptoms remaining at the moment?

Hi

What are the symptoms remaining at the moment?

I went buzzed around to few sites and it seems good. I didn't notice anything running while the pages were loading - they just came right up. I haven't finished the java update yet so finish that up.

Hi

Please run an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner) as instructed in the screenshot here (http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/Bleeping/KAS/KAS9.gif). Post back the report. If you get a message that latest Java must be installed "enable" the Java add-ons in IE7. Do that using "manage add-ons" from the IE7 toolbar.

I'm having some trouble with this. I disabled all other security and logged in as admin. but the download won't start.

Am I missing something to do?

Hi

To which point did you get with Kaspersky? A bit more details, please :)

Hi

http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/us/languages/english/main.html?n=1232806606634

I ask for the free scan, then it checks the system, I accept the terms, then it goes to the scan page and stops there. It never starts the update part...just stays at 0%. I just tried again this morning and got the same results.

Hi

Ok. Let's try ESET scanner instead.

* Go here (http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner) to run an online scanner from ESET.
Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click Start
When asked, allow the activex control to install
Click Start
Make sure that the option Remove found threats is UNchecked and the option Scan unwanted applications is checkmarked.
Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic, along with a new HijackThis log & a description of any remaining problems

Eset looks to be doing the same thing. I get to the part of starting the scan but it freezes up. After allowing activeX it says it needs to initialize but stays right there without doing anything.

I tried Eset again and it worked and ran a scan but it did not create a log that I can find. I copied the path right into the search box in notebook and it said it did not exist. The scan showed "no threats found". I can do another scan when I get back later.

I've removed limewire with revo uninstaller.

Before this all started I removed a Kodak picture utility but it shows up as an error when I reboot. It says something about a DLL...

It seems as if most of the problems are fixed but the longer I stay online the slower it gets. Gmail takes a long time to come up as well as yahoo and yahoo mail.

I just noticed that the scan date and time of the most HJT log is the same as other HJT scans. I was logged in as admin when I ran it.

Hi

I ran another Eset scan and though it found no threats I'm not able to find the log. I copied and pasted the pathway directly into notebook and also tries the run command from the start menu and still cannot find it. The Eset site offers an email results option and I tried that just for the sake of it and the link in my email went to an eset site that was in another language.

I'm at a loss.

Hi

If ESET found no threats then there's no need to generate a report.

To create a fresh hjt log please right click HijackThis.exe and select 'run as administrator'. Then create the log normally and post it back here. Have you defragged hard drive lately?

Before this all started I removed a Kodak picture utility but it shows up as an error when I reboot. It says something about a DLL...
Please note down exact error message.

Hi,

Start hjt (with run as administrator), do a system scan, check:
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)
O4 - Global Startup: Kodak EasyShare software.lnk = C:\Program Files\Kodak\Kodak EasyShare software\bin\EasyShare.exe

Close browsers and fix checked.

Reboot and post a fresh hjt log. Still getting the error message at startup?

Hi,

OK. The Kodak error messages are gone at startup.

I ran search and destroy after restarting just out curiosity and 3 enrtries were not allowed to be fixed.

It said: Unexpected error in fixing problem (cannot create file "C:\windows\wininit.ini". Access is denied.)

Here's the latest HJT log:

Hi

The log looks good after all. How's the system running?

Hi,

Both of our email accounts are slower than normal. Especially the yahoo account - it takes along time to bring up the inbox and a long time to go from one message to another.

Do you know why S&D can't fix those problems that it found?

Hi Blade,

I was able to get S&D to fix those last problems and lastest scan was clean. I kept forgetting to right click when opening these programs (even if I did the command prompt) and log as admin.

We're still slow.

Hi

To troubleshoot that slowness issue could you please try Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/) browser to see if those sites you have problems with open quicker with it?

Hi Blade,

I can't believe how much faster firefox is. We're right back to our speed at day one. Amazing.

I've also switched to online armor for firewall and will follow the other recommendations at the beginning of the forum.

Thank you so much for all your help and patience.

Hi Andy

Good to hear that helped :) Finally, let's reset system restore & uninstall ComboFix.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

A To disable the System Restore feature:

1. Click on the Start button.
2. Hover over the Computer option, right click on it and then click Properties.
3. On the left hand side, click Advanced Settings.
4. If asked to permit the action, click on Allow.
5. Click on the System Protection tab.
6. Uncheck any checkboxes listed for your hard drives.
7. Press OK.

B. Reboot.

C Turn ON System Restore.
Follow the steps like you did when disabling system restore but on step 6. check any checkboxes listed for your hard drives.

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
