Greetings, I am posting about a pretty nasty trojan on my mother's laptop. It seems to be stopping me from installing any scanning programs like Spybot or the Malwarebytes scanners, as well as preventing a lot of web surfing. Spybot S&D is not installed on this computer, so here is the HJT log. I have run erunt and saved a backup with that as instructed by the stickied thread.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

I apologize for the wait, volunteers are swamped at all forums with infected computers. If you have resolved your issues, please post to let me know so I can close this topic.

If you still need help, and you have read and followed the "Before you Post" directions, post a new HJT log since it has been five days, and I will take a look, please describe any recent symptoms.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\svchost.exe <<< there may be more hidden junk also.

Thanks

I have not used the computer since my post. It is a laptop that is used mainly by my mother for typing up reports and such. It's a very crippling problem, as it will nto allow me to install Spybot and any websites I try to go to end up being generic search engines with many ads. Also notable is that Windows Security Alert pops up mentioning a high risk trojan/worm named Win32.Zafi.B. Here is a fresh HJT log.

Thanks for returning your HJT log and the feedback. Proceed with the instructions carefully.

1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

2) Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally post the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Thanks

Everything went smoothly. Here are the logs. Worth mentioning, however, is that I still get a message from Windows Firewall regarding a "Win32.Zafi.B" and the only option it gives me is to Enable Protection, although Windows Firewall is already enabled. I'm not sure what to make of this. Thank you once again, and andymanchesta, for your help in resolving this issue.:bigthumb:

We have a ways to go yet, you had a very nasty infection, this is the next step.

1) Remove (delete) SDFix from the computer, we are finished with that tool. It did also locate an infection I did not know you had.

2) Not a lot showing in the log, but SDFix can't remove that junk completely.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

Download ComboFix from here:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Tutorial if needed

3) This can be done as time permits, but it is important.
Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Adobe Reader 7.1.0 <<< out of date and unsafe, see this:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-10081618-83.html?tag=nl.e433
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/
(if you want a smaller program, look at this one)
Foxit Reader 2.3 for Windows (make sure to uncheck toolbars)
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Both out of date, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

Mozilla Firefox (2.0.0.20) <<< I suggest the newest, safest version if you are going to run Firefox:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

I ran into a problem during the procedure where I could not install the recovery console due to a lack of an internet connection. The laptop could not establish an internet connection.

OK, we will install it later once you have an internet connection.

Take a moment to look at the combofix log, Files Created from 2008-12-24 to 2009-01-24
C:\sqmdata07.sqm <<< We are looking at the junk like this so you will know what it is:
http://www.what-is-exe.com/filenames/sqmdata00-sqm.html
the file association sqm stands for Service Quality Monitoring, they are used by MSN
to help to improve their programs. To get rid of them open MSN then, in the help,
select "Program to improve our services" and check "I don't want to participate in the program".
I'll allow you to do what you want with those, they are not malware.

For your information this item: SweetIM <<< you might want to read the EULA:
http://www.systemlookup.com/CLSID/8160.html

Please see this: AV: ZoneAlarm Security Suite Antivirus *On-access scanning disabled* (Outdated)

Please proceed carefully and in the numbered order.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll (file missing) <<< damaged
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://edits.mywebsearch.com/toolbar...p=ZNxdm117YYUS
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.exe.imgfarm.com/images/noc...1.0.0.15-3.cab

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

3) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

C:\SDFix <<< delete that folder and contents

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

5) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

How is the computer running now?

Thanks

The computer feels more stable and usable now in terms of being able to install MBAM and the like. However, there appears to be something wrong with its ability to connect to the internet. It is able to connect to the wireless network, but not access anything online. If I hardline it to the router with cat-5 it works just fine though, and that was my morkaround to update MBAM this time. It's not too important for the time being, although I thought it'd be worth mentioning. Here are the logs:

there appears to be something wrong with its ability to connect to the internet
As far as I can see, everything looks fine where malware is concerned. My next step would be to remove combofix and wrap up. I would like to install Recovery Console before removing combofix (unless you should have a Windows XP Operating System CD which has Recovery Console on it). It soounds like malware may have changed setting causing the internet issues, and I advise you to contact your ISP and ask the technical folks to check your settings. Make sure they know you are recovering from this infection.

I have a few things I could post to try but I would be stabbing in the dark, and might make things worse for the technicians. Let me know how they resolve the connection issues.

Thanks...Phil

Sorry for the delay in response, but classes have been busy as of late. In regards the the internet issue, it seems that a router restart did the trick. The system has been running smoothly as well. Thanks again for your assistance, and let me know if there are further steps I may take to improve the security of this system.

If you do not have a Windows XP Operating System CD, I suggest you install Recovery Console: This is your Operating System and you will use the Download for SP2.
Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3

This is the download for the computer:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=535D248D-5E10-49B5-B80C-0A0205368124&displaylang=en

Make sure to Download to the Desktop

These are the directions:

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

The problem with the wireless connection on this computer wasn't as easily solved as I had thought. However, a fresh install of the newest drivers from the manufacturer's website seems to have done the trick. Once again, I apologize for the delay in response, school has been busy.

AV: ZoneAlarm Security Suite Antivirus *On-access scanning disabled* (Outdated)
Make sure you get your antivirus program up to date, if you need a good freeware program, look in the last link I post.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, update it and run it once a month or so)

Update ZoneAlarm Security Suite Antivirus and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.

If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close the topic.

Everything works great! Thank you once again for all your help and patience. I will be sure to pass on the information I gained here to the computer owner to make sure she is as protected from future digital threats as possible.
