Hello and welcome to Safer Networking.

My name is peku006 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.
I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

Please observe these rules while we work:

If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

1 - Scan With ComboFix

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

How to Temporarily Disable Anti-virus (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

2 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

3 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the ComboFix log(C:\ComboFix.txt)
2. a fresh HijackThis log

Thanks peku006

Hi JohnnyD

Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1 (http://malwarebytes.gt500.org/mbam-setup.exe)
alternate download link 2 (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)

Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/database/mbam-rules.exe) and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:

Make sure the "Perform full scan" option is selected.
Then click on the Scan button.
If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button
The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:

Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Step 3, the Kaspersky step keeps failing. It will give me the error "Starting Java applet has failed! Please go online to use this program." and I know that I am online.

I just ignored it and it continued to download the 2060 KB update, but then will restart downloading it again. This has been going like this for about 30+ minutes now.

Any advice or perhaps a different approach?

Hi JohnnyD

Let´s try this......

Please go to F-Secure website (http://support.f-secure.com/ols3beta/start.html) to perform an online scan. Click on Start scanning at the bottom of the page.
You may be prompted to install an ActiveX before you are able to accept the License Agreement. If prompted, please install it. After installing, the Accept button will be available.
Click on Accept to accept the License Agreement.
Click on Custom Scan. Under Virus Scan Options, select the Scan whole system option.
Under Other Scan Options, select these options: Scan all files
Scan whole system for rootkits
Scan whole system for spyware
Scan inside archives
Use advanced heuristics Click Start.
It will start installing the scanner and virus definitions. Once the installation is done, it will start scanning automatically. This takes a while. Please be patient.
Click on I want decide item by item.
Under Actions, select None for all infections found.
Click Next.
Click on Show Report.
Please copy and paste this report in your next reply.
Click Finish.

Thanks peku006

Hi JohnnyD

the scans are fine and it looks like your machine is clean :yahoo:

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Download it from here (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html). Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial43.html)

Install SpyWare Blaster 4.0
Download it from here (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here (http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html)
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here (http://www.firetrust.com/en/products/sitehound)

Install MVPS Hosts File from here (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/software_inspector/)
F-secure Health Check (http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00001356.html)

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.
http://www.update.microsoft.com

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?" (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279)

Read some information here (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html) how to prevent Malware.

Happy safe surfing! :bigthumb:

thank you so very much for all your help. Just a couple more quick things. All these others programs that I grabbed (ATF cleaner, Javara, HJT, etc) do these need to be uninstalled, deleted or should I keep them?

Second, the free security tools you recommended. Should I use all of them or is that a list I should pick 1 from?

Hi JohnnyD

Uinstall HJT ,the others you can delete......(except combofix which you must uinstall)

Should I use all of them or is that a list I should pick 1 from

So I just ran Spybot S&D and came up with a whole list of things that were on my machine. I had it fix and remove selected items and now I'm running it again. Is this going to continue to be a problem?

I will grab those now and get them installed and protecting.

I also currently run AVG (free), do you think I should remove that or keep that as well as install the new ones?

Sorry to keep bothering you, not even sure if this pertains to anything you helped me with.

Everytime I restart my PC it takes about 5+ minutes for me to gain control over my desktop. Most icons are not seen and my quick launch bar is blue. When I mouse over the start button I get the hourglass icon. Once I get my PC I run Spybot S&D and I get this list of tracking cookies. Are these things still on my machine or getting in after I clean it out and restart? If this isn't something you deal with, could you please point me in the right direction.

I hate to say it, but something still seems to be getting by. I have those Virtumonde trojans back again. Maybe there were things that you needed to know that I didn't tell ya. I prefer to use Firefox as my browser, and I am connected to a home network. I don't know if this could be coming from my laptop to my desktop through the router.

If I should start a new post, just tell me and Ill post a new HJT log for someone else.

I hadn't gotten spyware blaster installed yet. I went out and left my PC on. When I came home I had warnings from AVG telling me of trojans and I selected to move them to the vault. Anyway, here's the NEW HJT log.

Hi JohnnyD

I also currently run AVG (free), do you think I should remove that or keep that as well as install the new ones?
AVG is a good one, I also have AVG on another computer

I get this list of tracking cookies. Are these things still on my machine or getting in after I clean it out and restart?
Cookies are not dangerous so there should not be any worries..........
tracking cookie is any cookie that is shared among two or more web pages for the purpose of tracking a user's surfing history. (source) But cookies are not bad in itself. You can use ATF Cleaner by Atribune to clean cookies and if you want to prevent them, I recommend to get Firefox and CookieSafe extension. Please note that some sites need cookies to work properly. CookieSafe allow you choose to enable cookies in certain sites. I hope this help.

System Still Slow?
You may wish to try StartupLite. (http://www.malwarebytes.org/startuplite.php) Simply download this tool to your desktop and run it. It will explain any optional auto-start programs on your system, and offer the option to stop these programs from starting at startup. This will result in fewer programs running when you boot your system, and should improve preformance.
If that does not work, you can try the steps mentioned in Slow Computer/browser? Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=87058&view=findpost&p=487112)

post back if it helped.

second PC

I had warnings from AVG
Can you tell me where and what name ?

1 - Clean temp files

Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

if you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

if you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program

2 - Scan With ComboFix

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

How to Temporarily Disable Anti-virus (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

3 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

4 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the ComboFix log(C:\ComboFix.txt)
2. a fresh HijackThis log

Thanks peku006

Can you tell me where and what name ?

Where:

File name: C:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\Then just a bunch of letters

Threat name: Trojan horse Vundo.DW

I had 4 of these when I came home today. All the same except the random letters part. I click "remove threat" and another window pops up saying "Specified file not found."

Doing the other stuff next, will post them soon.

Hi JohnnyD

1 - Check files for Viruses

Go to VirusTotal (http://www.virustotal.com) or Jotti's (http://virusscan.jotti.org/)

c:\windows\system32\drivers\22dcd76f.sys
c:\windows\system32\3B1FBA7F68.sys

Copy/Paste the first file on the list into the white Upload a file box.
Click Send/Submit, and the file will upload to VirusTotal/Jotti, where it will be scanned by several anti-virus programmes.
After a while, a window will open, with details of what the scans found.
Note details of any viruses found.
Repeat for all files on the list, and post me the details please

2 - Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Select the Update tab
Click Check for Updates
After the update have been completed, Select the Scanner tab.

The log can also be found here:

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

3 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the Jotti/Virustotal results
2. the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log

Thanks peku006

Sorry it took so long to get back to ya. Hopefully you haven't given up on me, been a rough week. Anyway, here's what ya asked for.

The first file i used on the Jotti site gave me this:

The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file

The second file I couldn't find. It wont let me copy the address into either site and when I browse to the folder I can't find the file.

Hi

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete this files(if present):
C:\Documents and Settings\John\My Documents\My Games\Games\DvD 1\The Sims 2 Kitchen & Bath Interior Design Stuff\ts2kbid.iso

It seems you don't have any evidence of a third party firewall.

As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

1) Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html) (Uncheck during installation "Install COMODO Antivirus (Recommended)"!, "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage")
2) Online Armor (http://www.tallemu.com/online_armor_free.html)
3) PC Tools (http://www.pctools.com/firewall/download/)
4) Sunbelt/Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm)
5) ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=nav_za) (uncheck ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker during installation if you choose this one)

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

Logs look good. How's the computer running now? Any problems?

Ok, so I removed that file and I installed Comodo. I had heard of ZoneAlarm and tried that one but when my PC reboot I never got my icons or taskbar back. I had to boot in safe mode and uninstall it for the PC to boot properly.

Anything else I need to do? (ie remove programs you had me install, etc)

Hi JohnnyD

The scans are fine and it looks like your machine is clean :yahoo:

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot.
Turn ON System Restore
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Download it from here (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html). Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial43.html)

Install SpyWare Blaster 4.0
Download it from here (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here (http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html)
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here (http://www.firetrust.com/en/products/sitehound)

Install MVPS Hosts File from here (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/software_inspector/)
F-secure Health Check (http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00001356.html)

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.
http://www.update.microsoft.com

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?" (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279)

Read some information here (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html) how to prevent Malware.

Happy safe surfing! :bigthumb:
