Thank You for your reply.

This PC is used for both work and personal use.

Although this PC does belong to a domain, 98% of the time it is logging on with cached credentials.

Although the company knows I found malware, it's up to me to decide if I need to format/reload or clean the PC if I can.

I should also now mention that following directions from other forums I went ahead and used combofix while I was waiting. It seems to have cleaned several of the problems but I still have a hit for virtumonde.generic when I do a S&D scan.

Here is an updated HJT log.

Do NOT run 'FIXES' before helpers have analyzed the HJT log
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=16806

ComboFix is not a general purpose cleaning tool, please do not use this tool without supervision.

1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

2) Post the log from Combofix.

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Thanks

I should also mention that I have uninstalled some older java versions since I originally detected the problem.

I have unchecked Resident "Tea Timer" in S&D and also run the batch file.

Here is the combo fix log.

This is a tough one, since stuff was in the HJT log and appears to be gone but is not showing at the beginning of the combofix log where stuff being removed would be listed. I also see this hidden item that does not identify but may be part of programs you are using but I do not recognize.

Let's proceed like this:
Make sure you can see all files and folders:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html
Use one of these free online scans to scan the file in red
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/
c:\windows\system32\drivers\mtojnsvq.sys 25088 bytes executable
Post that information so I can view it.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Tutorial if needed:

Thanks

This can be done as time permits, but it is important.
Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Adobe Acrobat and Reader 8.1.2 Security Update 1 (KB403742)
Adobe Reader 8.1.2 <<< out of date and unsafe, see this:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-10081618-83.html?tag=nl.e433
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/
(if you want a smaller program, look at this one)
Foxit Reader 2.3 for Windows (make sure to uncheck toolbars)

I've checked the tutorial for hidden files and I still can't see that file in c:\windows\system32\drivers.

I've double and triple checked that for both the specific drivers folder and also for all folders I've selected "Show hidden files and folders" and de-selected "Hide extentions of known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files"

I have run the scan with malwarebytes which DOES see that file. I have not yet taken action with it in case you want me to try to do something else with that file before malewarebytes tries to fix it.

Here is the log from Malwarebytes without me attempting the fixes yet.

Thank you for your patience.

Please read the MBAM instructions again, especially this:

Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected
Then run MBAM again and remove and quarantine anything it finds, post a new HJT log and tell me how the computer is running.

Thanks

I hadn't removed items yet because I was unable to comply with the first part of your instructions (scan c:\windows\system32\drivers\mtojnsvq.sys) and I wanted to make sure it was still ok to proceed with the rest.

Anyway, I have gone ahead removed everything with MBAM. The PC seems to be running well. S&D only picked up one tracking cookie now in its scan.

Here is the new HJT log.

That's not a problem, MBAM located and called the item for us:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\mtojnsvq.sys (Rootkit.Agent)
Remember when MBAM removes junk, it quarantines it in the event of an error. I suggest you always wait a few days, then clean out the quarantine folder.

I apologize for not asking, but we still have some cleaning to do and I would like to see the scan results from MBAM.

Thanks

Minor issues, when I have combofix installed, I have instructions to remove it including the C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\ which is where combofix placed the junk it removes for safety. I have to assume you still have combofix on the computer and will post accordingly. If you have removed it, then stop and let me know.

I also need to point out that MBAM needed a reboot to remove that rootkit, I also have to assume you allowed that reboot.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\mtojnsvq.sys (Rootkit.Agent) -> Delete on reboot.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat <<< right click the link and choose "Save target as...
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

5) Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

6) Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

7) Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, update it and run it once a month or so)

8) Update Symantec AntiVirus and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.

If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close the topic.

Both of your assumptions were correct, combofix was still installed and I did indeed let MBAM reboot when it needed to to remove any locked files.

I have run the reset batch file, and cleared the indicated entries with HJT.

I then ran the ATF cleaner followed by the uninstall of combofix as indicated.

I turned off System Restore / rebooted / Turned on system Restore as indicated.

And the good news is the MBAM scan came up clean.

I have also re-enabled tea timer in the tools->resident menu of S&D

Symatec is updated and I'll run a full scan at the end of the day today.

Thank you once again for all your help and advice. It looks like the PC is working quite well now.
