Passes all scans but strange search behavior and grayed out toolbar selection

Did have a Trojan toolbar but got it removed. The IE toolbar selection box is however grayed out. This prohibits selection of some toolbars and the "lock toolbar" feature. Have tried to remove IE and reinstall through control panel without success. Evidently MS just removes access, not the files themselves. Have updated everything in XP Pro and IE. Have tried a variety of virus/spyware/adware scans with no success. Nothing is found now that the toolbar was removed. Now getting occasional strange behavior from Google. Click on a search result is sometimes hijacked to another site. Searching on this behavior on Google gets a lot of hits but little help. Many thanks in advace.

Hello and welcome to the forum. You have been hijacked by folks in the Ukraine, see this: http://whois.domaintools.com/85.255.115.70
This infection is being called Wareout and because these infections seem to attract others and to deny the hackers access to your computer, I suggest you stay off line as much as possible until you are clean.

Thanks to LonnyRJones, Swandog46, AutoDad and and others who helped with this fix. Please follow the directions carefully.

1) You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your Desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt

(please hold the logs until the end of the instructions)

2) Now lets check some settings on your system.
(2000/XP) Only
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

What program would you suggest to avoid this in the future?I wish I had a silver bullet, there are none. You are running some good programs now. I will offer in a moment, comments from some of the best in this business. I am a firm believer in freeware programs, and pay only for my antivirus (because I can run four computers for the same price) and I can tell you keeping the programs up to date and ran as instructed then using safe online habits probably have as much to do with it as anything.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
