I'm currently working on a co-workers computer. I have a clean scan with AVG free, clean scan with adaware, but I'm still getting these 3 annoying registry entries with Spybot S&D. They won't go away. Help please. This is the first time I ever posted on a site like this. I have HJT too.
Thank you in advance for your help!!!!!!!!!

Hello and welcome to the forum. We prefer to see a HJT log, please be advised that most forums Pin the information you need at the top of the page. These two links are a must before you can proceed, but I suggest you review all Pinned information.

Following the instruction here, should remove that stuff:
Please download and unzip Ren-cmdservice to your desktop.
It will only work correctly if the folder is placed on your desktop and extracted !!.
http://downloads.subratam.org/Lon/ren-cmdservice.zip
Open the ren-cmdservice folder by doubleclicking it and then doubleclick the
ren-cmdservice.bat file to run the program.
A text will open when it is finished, Post it please.
Then restart the PC run spybot check for and fix any problems found.
Thanks...pskelley

Hello, I have to apologize, seems where I sent you it did not clearly spell out the need to have an updated version of HJT. We are using version 1.99.1 and you are still on 1.98.2 perhaps a couple of years old?
The new log shows several areas hackers are using that this version does not. I do have to tell you that you do have some nasties that need to go, but I would prefer to look at the update log before starting. You can help get a jump on it by providing information about these items:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hrakebc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hjicyco.exe
They look much like trojans and do not identify with Google. These free online scans will provide you with the information we need, use one or more:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html
Post the results for me, I am about 99% sure these are bad, and you do have other junk that needs to go also.
The position of the HJT log is fine where it is, the easiest way to do this is to click this link: http://www.merijn.org/files/HijackThis.exe then choose SAVE. In the Save In box, navigate to C:\hijack this\ and save it to that same folder. You will be prompted to remove the old version (HJT will do that for you), then once this is done, open HJT 1.99.1 and click on "Do a system scan and save a logfile". It will take a few minutes and present you with a Notepad with the logfile in it. First click Format and be sure Word Wrap IS NOT checked, then click on Edit and Select all. Copy and Paste the highlited information to this same topic and I will be notified when you do and respond as soon as possible after that with instructions.
Thanks...Phil

I appreciate the new log, but I need the information I requested before I can effectively start. Make sure you have all hidden files and folders enabled:
How to make files and folders visible:Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.
Open one of the scanners like: http://virusscan.jotti.org/ Look for File to upload & scan: Then click Browse and navigate to the item. Once you have it in the box, click Submit. You will quickly receive information, post that for me for both items. If jotti is busy, use one of the others.
Once that is done, we would like to take a look at a Blacklight scan, follow these instructions, do not fix anything. Just post the results of the scan.
Download f-secure blacklight from here:
http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/
1) choose: I Accept
2) download/save to Desktop
3) Choose Scan
Thanks...Phil

neither file is present in the windows32 directory. both exist in the windows\prefetch (but are clean) and both exist in the housecall quarentine directory. here are the results:
Scanned file: hjicyco.exe.bac_a03864 - Infected
hjicyco.exe.bac_a03864 - infected by Trojan.Win32.Painwin.a
Scanned file: hrakebc.exe.bac_a03864 - Infected
hrakebc.exe.bac_a03864 - infected by Trojan.Win32.Painwin.a
I'm doing the blacklight scan now.

Thanks you very much for you patience. One of the Members of Team Spybot spotted something in your log to suggest a look for a rootkit, hense the Blacklight. If he should pop in with a request for information, please do your best to assist him, thanks.
I am surprised you could not see those two items in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ folder since the HJT log shows there are running from there:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hjicyco.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hrakebc.exe
You are postive you followed the instructions to show hidden files and folder, you might not have seen them without doing that. I will ask you to look one more time. I will suggest a proceedure, remove what I see and do some cleaning. We will see how you are running at that point.
I am also seeing a marker that may indicate a Qoologic trojan, lets proceed like this and see what happens. Let me know about anything during the proceedure you think I should know about.
both exist in the windows\prefetch (but are clean) and both exist in the housecall quarentine directoryI would delete all of the contents of that housecall folder, we will be purging the contents of Prefetch.
1) This item is running from services, we must stop it from running to delete it:
Disable the offending Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to hcityae and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.
Delete the offending Service
Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
In the Delete window, type hcityae and press OK.
OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.
2) ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) it is a trial version of the program.
Install ewido security suite
Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update
Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/)
Once the updates are installed do the following:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")
3) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs and uninstall MyWaySA (Search) if there and any other item you know does not belong there. If you are not sure let me know and I will look.
4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

I went into service to stop it but it wasn't running. then I made the startup type disabled. I tried to do the HJT delete service but it said it couldn't delete it because it was running or enabled. I disabled it. Services reports it is not running. It's not showing up in task manager. I know I hit the apply button after changing the startup to disabled (did it 3 times) but if I right click it and refresh it, it changes back to automatic. should I continue with your instructions or wait?

If you are talking about ewido, try booting into safe mode (diagnostic mode) and running it from there: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial61.html Looks like this fix is going to be a little tricky, so if you need to send quick questions you can use private message if you wish:
http://forums.spybot.info/private.php?do=newpm&u=233
Been at it since around 6 AM EST so I will be shutting down around 9PM and I have a morning meeting so it might be afternoon tomorrow before I am back at the forum.
Thanks...Phil

OK Jeff, we will get this thing, but you do not want to be tired working on it. That is when mistakes can be made. ewido usually cleans out a bunch of junk, but if you can't get it to run in safe mode, then set it aside and continue through the manual part with HJT and the manual removal. Once you have completed all of the instructions, then try ewido again, and it should work. Hope this help...Phil

Hi Jeff, sorry to report we still have work to do, these items are still in your HJT log:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [guarnset] C:\WINDOWS\system32\guarnset.exe
This is a nasty called Adlogic (adware) here is the Google on it:
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2006-16,GGLG:en&q=guarnset%2Eexe
O23 - Service: hcityae - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hcityae.exe (file missing) << even though it says the file is missing, that is a glitch in HJT and the file is there, so the item is active.
now this one does not identify: Your search - hcityae.exe - did not match any documents. My bet...it is a trojan.
Now there is really no reason to try to identify these, our challenge is to remove them.
The first item, I am surprised it is still there, once you remove it with HJT that stops the process from running and you should be able to delete the file with no problem. The other one can be a problem, because it is running as a service and must be disabled first. I know you tried this before, but look again to see if it is services:
Disable the offending Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to hcityae and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.
If you can not see it there, then try this:
Open HJT > Open the Misc Tools section > Chose Delete an NT service > hcityae (that's all we have for a name)
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [guarnset] C:\WINDOWS\system32\guarnset.exe
O23 - Service: hcityae - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hcityae.exe (file missing)
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
Do not restart the computer until after the files have been deleted.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\guarnset.exe >>> file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hcityae.exe >>> file
Check prefetch since this junk was running from there before, if unsure delete everything in it again.
C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete the contents (NOT THE FOLDER)
________________________________________________________________
You know those two files must go, if you can't get rid of them that way, then I want you to download this tool and read the instructions carefully:
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=320
Then try to remove these two files using Killbox, start with "Standard File kill" and move to the others if you need to. You should know by now what these look like in the log.
Keep me posted...Phil
Since you can not run ewido for some reason, you may remove it completely, I may ask you to try another scanner a little later.

OK :bigthumb: That log is clean, tell me how you removed that 023 item for future reference, thanks. Let me give you this information now:
Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict2520.html
http://cybercoyote.org/security/not-admin.shtml
ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam
Then if possible I would like to see two more logs since this was a very nasty infection.
Click this link: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html then choose number 5, How to Generate a Startup listing. Post that log please.
And a Kaspersky scan, this will probably take 45 to an hour on a clean machine. Post the results when you can.
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner
You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Thanks...Phil

Hi Jeff, first, if you had followed these directions, you would never have seen most of the stuff in the Kaspersky report:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...rc=sec_doc_namIf you have not done this, please make it a priority.
Navigate to and delete all files in red. You may need safe mode to do this??
(first two, delete all files in the TIF folder) (not the folder)
C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\ODAJCD6Z\XoftSpy_setup[1].exe/data0035
C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\ODAJCD6Z\XoftSpy_setup[1].exe
C:\WINDOWS\DHU.exe/data0001 <<< file
C:\WINDOWS\pf78ba.exe/data0002 <<< file
C:\WINDOWS\WPRE.exe/data0004 <<< file
That should make your log spotless, you can run Kaspersky again if you wish to be sure.
any issues to mention?
Thank you pskelley. :)
