I have Spybot S&D installed and it continually finds:
Smitfraud-C
Virtumonde
Virtumonde.generic
Virtumonde.sci

This occurs even after problems are "fixed." I'm experiencing significant pop-up activity, threats of infection with encouragement to buy products, lag, and explorer having difficulty during shutdown (not responding). On top of this, automatic updates is disabled and will not run.

Like stated I have fun Spybot S&D (several times), I have also run CCleaner to clear registry, etc. I have disabled TeaTimer and backed up my registry. Thanks in advance for your reply and help.

Hi,

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Thank you very much for your reply. I ran ComboFix as instructed. It did not automatically install the Windows Recovery Console, so I manually did so after ComboFix finished. The log of this is directly following the ComboFix log:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

LimeWire

I'd like you to read this thread (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282).

Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

Delete these folders afterwards:

C:\Program Files\LimeWire

Empty Recycle Bin.

After that:

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Save this as
CFScript

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one here (http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/) or get Foxit Reader here (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader_2/down_reader.htm). Make sure you don't install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader!

Hello again. I followed all of your instructions. I had already uninstalled Limewire (was not listed on the program removal list)...but went ahead and looked for left over components to delete and deleted the folder as asked. Question: I have tried to delete Symantec, but cannot get it to quit showing up on the removal list. Any suggestions?

The computer is running much better already thanks to your help. Below are the requested logs:

Question: I have tried to delete Symantec, but cannot get it to quit showing up on the removal list. Any suggestions?
Hi

You can use this (http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039) removal tool to get rid of the installation. Let me know if that helped :)

Thanks again for your quick reply. I'm not sure if my version of Norton's was older than the tools, but I continue to fail to remove Symantec from teh program list, even after running the tool. When I try to delete files manually, it says I cannot due to "vpshell2.dll". I'm really not sure if this is a big deal or not.

Since getting rid of Symantec I have been using the S&D TeaTimer as my main line of defense and making sure to clear with CCleaner and scan with S&D frequently. Please let me know if you have suggestions/warnings/ideas regarding this setup.

My computer seems to be running fairly well now after the fixes. Any further steps?

Again, thanks for your help.

Hi

Please post a fresh hjt log and I'll try to give instructions to manually remove Symantec parts.

TeaTimer isn't antivirus program. That means you have to get one and I'll give some recommendations in final cleaning phase :)

Creating & executing batch file
-------------------------------

Open notepad and then copy and paste the bolded lines below into it. Go to File > save as and name the file fixes.bat, change the Save as type to all files and save it to your desktop. (If you are still unsure on how to do this there is a little tutorial with pictures here (http://www.nellie2.co.uk/file.htm#How_to_Make_a_.Bat_File))
@echo off
sc stop DefWatch
sc delete DefWatch
sc stop "Norton AntiVirus Server"
sc delete "Norton AntiVirus Server"

Double-click on fixes.bat file to execute it.

Delete following folder if found:
C:\Program Files\SYMANT~1 (folder name which begins as Symant)

Reboot and post a fresh hjt log.

I notice I'm still not able to run automatic updates.
Do you get any error message of that?

Hello again. Good news... Automatic updates is now working. I just had to re-enable it. I was able to update.

I followed your instructions in regards to Nortons. I just checked the add or delete program files list and it is still on there. The only folder I can find on the computer with Syman is C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared. It contains a folder named SSC, which has several .ldl, .dll, and .ocx files. I am unable to delete this folder. Again, this may not be a big deal. Just somewhat frustrating that I can't get something off of my computer that I don't want anymore.

Hi,

Let's remove that folder :)

We need to execute an OTMoveIt3 script
Please download OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTMoveIt3.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Double click theOTMoveIt3 icon on your desktop.
Paste the following code under the Paste Fix Here area. Do not include the word
Code
.

:Files
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared

Push the large MoveIt button.
OTMI3 may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
Copy/Paste the contents under the Results line here in your next reply with a fresh hjt log.
If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Try to uninstall Norton entries in add/remove programs.

Happy Super Bowl Sunday to ya. You into the NFL over in Finland?
Anyway, followed your instructions. The folder was moved...but, Symantec AntiVirus Client is still on the Add/Remove Programs list. When I push to Remove it says it is configuring the Client, then stops with no changes. Below are the logs.
Root for the Cardinals if you are watching the Super Bowl. :)

========== FILES ==========
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SSC moved successfully.
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared moved successfully.

You into the NFL over in Finland?
I do watch it occasionally. It was night here in Finland so I couldn't watch the match (had early wake in the morning). Shall look for a replay later :)

Let's remove Symantec AntiVirus Client entry from the list.

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. To delete "Symantec AntiVirus Client" entry by simply clicking on it on the list and then click on the Delete this entry button.

Let me know how that goes :)

By now you may have heard the no good news. :(

I followed your instructions. Symantec Antivirus Client is still on the Add/Remove programs list, just now the Remove button is no longer there.

Sorry it's taking awhile for replies, looks like we are on different schedules.

The Windows Installer Cleanup took care of it! It's no longer on the add/remove programs list.

Good. Sounds like we're ready for final phase here :)

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Next we remove all used tools.

Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Get Anti Virus Software and keep it updated - Most AVs will update automatically, but if not I would recommend making updating the AV the first job every time the PC is connected to the internet. An AV that is using defs that are seven days old is not going to be much protection. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. Good free antivirus programs are:
Antivir (http://free-av.com/en/download/1/download_avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html)
Avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html)

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html) webpage out.
If you don't have a 3rd party firewall or a router behind NAT then I recommend getting one. I recommend either Online Armor Free (http://www.tallemu.com/free-firewall-protection-software.html) or Comodo Firewall Pro (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html#fw3.0) (If you choose Comodo: Uncheck during installation "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage" and install firewall ONLY!).

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

I followed your instructions. I'm having a little trouble updating Office (I have Office 2000 Premium) and once I loaded the protective software it seemed my machine slowed considerably. But, no current pop-ups, wrongful warnings, or other issues.

Thanks for all your help. Let me know if you want a HJT log...cause I'm going to delete it if you dont. :)

Hi

What kind of trouble?

and once I loaded the protective software it seemed my machine slowed considerably
System without av and firewall is faster but if it gets infected then it usually gets even slower bringing other issues as well that's why protection software is recommended and needed. How much memory does your system have and what kind of processor?

Hello
It asks me to insert the Microsoft Office 2000 Premium CD...but, I dont have it. My version is "genuine", but I dont have the CD. Trying to track it down now. Do you know of a way to load the updates w/out the CD?

My computer is running okay once it gets booted. Boot time was extended about 3 minutes to load the new protective hardware. This is probably worth it.
I have a pentium 4, 2Ghz, 256MB RAM.

Hi

Unfortunately, I don't know if it's possible install update if it needs something from the media. Office 2000 is also such an outdated version that Microsoft probably won't give support for it anymore.

I recommend that you double the memory amount there if possible. Processor itself is good enough for Windows XP.
