Reported by Spybot Search & Destroy. I may be too late in getting rid of them as some directories and files are already "hidden". Here's the report. Thanks for all the help!

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.
I apologize for the wait, volunteers are swamped at all forums with infected computers. If you have resolved your issues, please post to let me know so I can close this topic.
If you still need help, and you have read and followed the "Before you Post" directions, post a new HJT log since it has been four days, and I will take a look, please describe any recent symptoms.

Here's a brand new log, Phil. In the interim, I ran AVG which spotted and (to its knowledge) deleted 10 infected files. I haven't logged in using the Admin account. My own user account is missing a lot of profile items and most of the hard drive is "hidden" in Windows Explorer. Thanks again for all the help!

2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.
*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP,
Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)

When trying to run ComboFix, I got a dialog stating ComboFix had expired and would run in Reduced Functionality mode. Will Reduced Functionality mode be adequate? If not, where can I get an updated one?

Mary, if you are downloaded a new version from the link I posted, go ahead and use it. I know sUBs, the creator of the tool needed to take a few days away. This might be what is causing that message.

Now when I run it, I get a Windows error stating prep.com has encountered a problem and is shutting down. Then the usual send MS an error message. I'll try deleting the file, and redownloading (again). Any other suggestions?

Yes...please delete combofix completely from the computer. Once it is gone, then a new version has be uploaded. Download it from here:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
to your Desktop then run it according to the directions posted earlier.

I'm sorry. I deleted it, restarted, downloaded the new one, turned off AVG, double-clicked the icon to run it. I'm still getting the error about prep.com not being ready. Do I need to just wait until the sUBs folks get back, or is there something else I should try? Thanks again for helping me, and for volunteering!

sUBs is back and that is the newest version. What I need from you is the error message you are receiving "word for word"
so I can try to find out what is causing the error.
Once I receive the error from you it will likely be morning before I can get information.
In the meantime, let's try another tool.
1) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Google is returning nothing about that error, and I have never seen it before. Are you sure there is not more to the error message?

Hi Mary, thanks for trying but it looks like that is the default message when anything happens in Windows. Keep an eye open, you may never see the error again, but if you do make a screenshot of it like this:

hp print screen utility <<< just noticed you have this installed and it can be used.
I am concerned about this item and wish to be sure it is safe, if you do not know why it is running at startup, do this:
O4 - Startup: ChkDisk.dll <<< this file, we need to know where it is located
Make sure you can see all files and folders:

Use Start > Search > All Files and Folders > copy and past that spelling exactly: ChkDisk.dll
Once you have the location then use one or mmore of these free online scans:

Scan the file and post the results.
I looked on my computer and do not see that file with that spelling, the actual valid Windows file is CHKDSK.EXE <<< VALID file
so I suspect that is likely malware but we must be sure. Hackers call thier junk want they want to hide it from us.
MBAM removed a lot of junk, how is the computer running now?
Please post an AVG scan result (unless it is clean)
*Right click the icon for AVG in System Tray and choose Open AVG User Interface.
*Click on Update now, allow AVG to download and install any new updates.
* Click on Computer Scanner then choose "Scan whole computer", this takes a round one hour on the computer I am using now.
* Near the bottom above the words "The scan is complete" choose "Export overview to file"
* Choose Desktop and give it a name you will recognize like AVG Scan Results, then choose SAVE.
* Close results and close the Interface.
* Copy and paste the contents of that file.

I've removed the Java pieces (haven't had to write any Java code for a while) as well as Acrobat.
I did install the newest version of Spybot S&D. I'd been doing updates on the previous version every day, so I'm not sure what had changed between the two.
I tried to search for the ChkDisk.dll, but Windows can't find it. I did run AVG in the interim, so the file *may* have been removed.
I've run AVG scans a couple of times. The first run took about 4 hours (in Advanced mode), and returned nothing except tracking cookies. I ran it last night also (in Fast mode), and returned nothing but tracking cookies again. Why Spybot hadn't dealt with those, I'm not sure. I don't believe I'm in the clear though: even though the AVG scan is returning no threats, Resident Shield is showing BackDoor hits. (I'm sorry about not having all wording: I'm in the office right now, and I'll post complete information when I get home. I just wanted to let you know where things were at.) I've seen some nasty information about the BackDoor piece. Also, is it safe to turn the Tea Timer on yet?

Spybot may be removing them and if you return to the website that placed them, they are just put back. I personally allow only the cookies I have to for password and security. If I am told by a website I can't use it unless I allow their cookies, that's the last they ever see of me.
"Resident Shield is showing BackDoor hits." <<< that is what TeaTimer is supposed to do. You must understand since organized crime moved online, the internet is not longer a safe place. As long as TT and your other security tools block the junk, that is what they are supposed to do. TeaTimer can be set to block the junk silently if you wish, read the tutorial.
Let's see if we can wrap up like this...
Clean the System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, update it and run it once a month or so)
Update AVG8 and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean.
