Hi there,
I would appreciate very much if someone can help me out on this.
I have the same problem as snecks who has posted in another thread earlier, which is archived now.
After my McAfee VirusScan detected FakeAlert-B trojans in c:\windows\system32\Id8187.tmp, c:\windows\system32\1024\id956.tmp, amongst others, which then declared them 'deleted and cleaned', the popups still keep appearing. I have also run Spybot & Ad-Adware to help clean the system and have since clean/deleted afew of the infected files/registries. However, it seems to be of little help as the popups remained, and my homepage is permanently fixed on http://www.bestsafetyguide.com.
Please advise on what I should do to get rid of this problem. I'm at my wits end and am thinking of reformatting the hard drive.

Proceed with the instrctions carefully and then post the three logs requested in this same topic and I will be notified when you post and respond as soon as possible after that to see if anything is left to do.

No Problem, I understand completely how you feel with a sick computer. I have three and feel the same way about each of them. Let's look at how you did.
Great job follow the complex instruction:bigthumb: if you every want to know more about this process, there are several free learning opportunites available at the forums online, just let us know.
We have a little more work to do not related to Smitfraud. I suggest you proceed like this:
1) Your Java program is outdated and that will get you infected quick. C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< Please use the information in this link to get yourself secure: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=2559
2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:
C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete the contents (NOT THE FOLDER)

If you don't have a good cleaner, use this free one with these instructions:
Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.
Restart the computer and post a new HJT log along with your comments. How is the computer running now.

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
