Would appreciate any help. I am somewhat PC Literate but not with this debacle. This may be a challenge. Machine redirects Search Engines to different sites. I use both IE and Firefox with IE appearing worse. PC IS REMARKABLY slow coupled with programs apparently running in the background. First window warning from Spybot indicated that QTTASK.EXE made 474 modifications to Windows Startup Settings! After that; everytime i opened IE I would get the following Spybot warning: BAD URL BLOCKER HAS DETECTED: http//ad.yieldmanager.com/st?ad_type=ifran . Ran a Spybot scan and identified VIRTUMONDE.SCI in two locations. Spybot indicated that it successfully removed VIRTUMONDE.SCI. Meantime my machine still redirects and is remarkably slow in processing and or url's / web pages "time out" before they can open. Most pages that do open ALL indicate; "done, but with errors" if they open at all. If my PC doesn't work; I am out of business. Appreciate any help that you can provide.

I followed your instruction on the HiJack this "sticky".
However, It appears to me that your link to ERUNT-g may have changed. I downloaded it but it gives me no adanced ability to choose, "system registry" in a window. The choses appear to be different path/keys "within the registry and none of them say "system registry".

Thank you,

Burnd

Hello burnd,

Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at your own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Hi Ken: thanks for the response & as per your instructions see enclosed new HJT Log and ComboFix Log. ComboFix ripped through it quickly and displayed the log on note pad. ComboFix did not display any windows regarding Microsoft Windows Recovery Console; but it did indicate it was establishing a new "restore point". Obviously, I can't interpret either of the logs but I'll leave that up to you. Machine is still slow; IE frequently takes forever to open and sometimes "times out" before it can open. I have had redirection of Google Searches to nonrelated web pages, etc. Norton Scans and Spybot scans are not showing me anything unusual other than traditional tracking cookies. Almost ALL webpages including yours indicate "DONE" but with errors. Any additional advice would be greatly appreciated. BTW: Darien?; your an hour east of me from North Joisey. I am a HEADHUNTER and use this PC 10 hours a day for business. It's a crises for me. Thanks again for your help. Burnd

Combofix did not remove much.

Do this first...Important

Disable the TeaTimer, leave it disabled until we're done or it will prevent fixes from taking

Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
On the left hand side, Click on Tools
Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer.<--You need to do this for it to take effect

Please do not proceed until the TeaTimer is disabled

Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html) or Here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe)

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.<-- Don't forget this
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

OK Ken:
I completed the following in sequence:

Disabled Norton.
Disbled Tea Timer and rebooted.
Ran Spybot S&D: (Note: everytime i run Spybot, it ALWAYS has to correct the Microsoft Windows Security is Disabled). Not sure if thats normal.
Ran the ATF Cleaner.
Ran MBAM. When MBAM completed (which was very quick) it went straight to a log in notepad. There was no option to "show results" nor was there ANY option to CHECK mark anything and click "REMOVE SELECTED". That was not anywhere in the equation. That said; the log indicated that there was no infections ANYWHERE in the scan so maybe it didn't provide me with a "remove selected" option, cause there wasn't anything to remove.
If these following 2 LOGS don't show you something that appears out of normal; then i would assume that i have some other issues that have nothing to do with Malware, etc. I will wait for you to advise me accordingly from the logs. If you feel everthing looks normal; then i may look at disabling unnecessary PROGRAMS form STARTUP and disabling unnecessary SERVICES from STARTUP. I know BLEEPING COMPUTER provides some cross referencing support for the acronyms in STARTUP and I'll just use common sense in my choices. This may help speed the machine up too. I have a feeling we are running out of software scanning options and you have been outstanding with your "follow the bouncing ball" instructions. I will followup with a donation to your organization or you (for your time); which ever is acceptable. I wasn't looking for a free ride; only a solution to my issues. It's late but i will use the machine tomorrow and see how it's reacting to what we have done. After you review the logs; kindly advise accordingly. Thank's again for your help and time. Bernie

Not sure if this will raise any flags with you. When i open Internet Explorer the 1st time after boot; it wll NOT open. The address bar does not load the path; no tool bars load; the whole pane stays empty except for backround with empty address bar at the top. I can't close it either. I have to minimize it; then right click and select close on the minimized tab. Then i get the traditional window telling me that the program is not responding. You know the drill from there. Then the SECOND time i click to open windows IE; it opens instantly. AND all the pages indicate in the lower level corner "DONE" BUT with errors. Anyway; just some after thought information in case it raises any flags with you. FWIW.

Good Morning Bernie,

Open IE and go to Tools> Internet Options > Advanced Tab> Reset Internet Explorer Setting > Reset.......let it do its thing....than ok your way out. Close IE and then reopen it and see if this made a difference.

We have many tools at our disposal, first lets run a free online virus scanner.

Please run this free online virus scanner from ESET (http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner)

Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click Start
When asked, allow the activex control to install
Click Start
Make sure that the option Remove found threats is ticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Then lets check for a rootkit infection, a rootkit will not show up on your HJT log.

Download Blacklight Rootkit Detection and Elimination Tool (ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe) to your desktop

Click on fsbl.exe to run it and follow the prompts, post the log please

ESET identified 3 Trojans and 1 Trojan variant and deleted or addressed them. The variant I am not sure it deleted in total. My perception is that it was "shared" but ESET still eliminated the threat.

I assume we are "clean now". Frankly, I DO NOT understand how NORTON cannot identify these embedded Trojans after multiple scans??? That said: Your bag of tricks is impressive. I think I will buy the ESET Program and use it to apply intermitent backup scans to NORTON.

Final steps please???
Enable Tea Timer I presume?
Enable all my Virus Protection again?
Anything else I need to do?

BTW: I have kept a record of all the processes you walked me through. I can't thank you enough for your help and time. FWIW: I am a HeadHunter specializing in H/W & S/W development, but I do not get involved in Applications or Web Development S/W. If I can be of any help to you or any of your associates, please do not hesitate to inquire. If I can't help you directly, I can advise you accordingly. I will post email contact if it's not against the rules of the Spybot Forum. I will also make a donation to the cause.

Kindly advise on closure OR if you we need to do any other scan or deletions.

Best regards,

Bernie

Hello Bernie,

Thanks for your offer Bernie . What I would do is to keep the TeaTimer disabled, I am linking you to some free programs to install that are recommended by the fine folks in the Malware Removal Community and two of them will conflict with the TT. Just keep Spybot updated and be sure to run the Immunization feature, it will prevent 1000s of bad sites from being able to download there garbage.

Your call on the AV, I am pretty impressed with ESET.

GMER <---Drag it to the trash

ATF Cleaner <-- Yours to keep, run it now and then to clean out the clutter.

Malwarebytes <-- Yours to keep also, check for updates and run a scan now and then.

Combofix <---Is not a general cleaning tool, just run it with supervision or you can bork your system

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:

Delete the following:
ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
VundoFix backups, if present
The C:\Deckard folder, if present
The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
Reset the clock settings.
Hide file extensions, if required.
Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
Reset System Restore.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn

Hi Ken:

I completed all the followup and the machine is running fine. I have some other general questions about trimming programs that load in startup (and run in the background), but I'll inquire about them in a different forum so I don't tie up this thread with unrelated issues. I am not going to download all the other extra programs you suggested. It' reaches a point where it's overkill. I will keep Spybot up to date and spot check with ESET. If you need to reach me for work; as a moderator, i am sure you get my email which is in my profile.

Thanks again and Best regards,

Bernie

Bernie,

If this was my system, I would keep the TT disabled and install SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard, this is not overkill , running more than one AntiVirus program is, installing these will not hamper system performance.

NO TT and will download Spyware Blaster & SpyGuard; as per your suggestion. I hate hearing "I told you so" when I get in trouble again later. Only way I can cover my ass is to follow your path.

Thanks,

Bernie
