Hi everyone, I'm posting a question for my husband, he has something nasty on his laptop, as it keeps pinging off various sites (like windowsupdater), and he is unable to do a defrag. He was recommended spybot s&d. He tried to log on to the safer-networking.org site, but cant. The laptop is saying 'page error'. My laptop, on the same network, logs straight in. He managed to download spybot s&d from a site called c.net.

It seemed to install ok, and the immunization worked ok, but then when he tried to check for problems it asks him to update. As soon as he tries to do so, he gets a message saying ' error retrieving update info file'

Then I thought I'd have a go, and downloaded from a site someone mentioned on the forum, when I tried to install it, all was ok to start with until I got a message saying 'server name or address could not be resolved'

Anyone got any ideas for 2 not very computer literate people who are trying to figure this out?

I should say, he runs windows xp, and has been using Norton. We tried switching Norton off but it made no difference. He was using internet explorer, but switched to firefox. I have a mac so am irrelevant! We have a broadband connection.

Thanks all in advance

This sounds like a malware infection (because Windows Update is disabled). The malware seems to disable your ability to visit anti-spyware/virus sites. Follow the instructions below:
Consider posting in the Malware Removal (http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22) forum and having someone take a look at your system.

If you decide to have an experienced malware removal specialist assist you, please follow the procedure in this link to run scans and produce a HijackThis log: "BEFORE you POST"(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance) ( http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288).
After you have completed the required scans and produced the requested logs, start your own thread in the Malware Removal (http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22) forum, making sure to post the HijackThis log produced from the above instructions.
