Virtumonde.sci detected by Spybot

Hi Guys,

I ran Spybot yesterday and it found virtumonde.sci entries in the registry as follows:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{A8F38D8D-E480-4D52-B7A2-731BB6995FDD}

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{A8F38D8D-E480-4D52-B7A2-731BB6995FDD}

Unfortunately, it won't allow me to delete the registry entries as Spybot says they are being used (in memory).

I have followed the procedures from previous threads, but nothing seems to work to remove the registry entries.

Can anyone help me with this problem? Many thanks in advance.

Hi Guys

This morning I started my computer in Safe Mode and re-ran Spybot. Again, it detected the two virtumonde.sci registry entries, but I was able to remove them.

I re-started my computer and ran NoAdware 4.0, which detected several nasties and then removed them. Unfortunately, every time I re-started my computer and ran NoAdware it detected the following registry entry:

Hijacker.InternetExplorerZoneHijack

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-733660467-3061683408-4132294243-1006\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\defaultbar.com

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.<-- Don't forget this
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Hello Alex,

I would not put to much faith in NoAdware, what your getting is a false positive. This is not the best of programs, you may want to think about uninstalling it. When we're done I will link you to free programs to install that will help keep you more secure.

There is no Vundo on your HJT log and if it was present Malwarebytes would have picked it up.

What I would do is to open Spybot Search and Destroy and go to Help> About and make sure its version 1.6.2, if not uninstall it via the Add Remove Programs and download and install the latest version

Open up the program, check for update and run a scan , remove what it finds, reboot you system and run another scan, it may take a time or two before it comes up clean.

I want to point out that two of these programs will interfere with the TeaTimer in Spybot, Spybot is a great program but keep the TeaTimer disabled but do use the Immunize feature as it will block a lot of this garbage from installing.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
