Alright, I volunteered to fix a friends computer and this thing was really messed up. I ran spysweeper, ad-aware, spybot, avg, norton, spyware doctor.
XP home sp2. I tried msconfig, regedit for manual surfsidekick removal, etc. safemode, etc.
I tried BFU with the goofix.
I am in over my head, and I do not want to reformat (but that is what I am leaning towards)

Please help! Thanks in advance.

No, the surfsidekick is not in add remove programs. There is "surfhere" by toshiba, but I think that is different. I see snowball wars in the add remove, I see "defender19" in c/programs files.
Spysweeper (webroot) detects surfsidekick on restart (as attempting to install) and tries to block it.Do you want to remove, (and I select yes). But when on the internet, popups start.
I have/had spyware doctor on their too, but that appears to be detected as spyware as well? Something about BHO on restart by webroot spysweeper.

Sorry for the delay in-between, but I have to transfer the files from a non-connected computer, burn it to disk, and then open the files and post from a connected computer.

Thanks again for all your support. I am trying to get this computer back as soon as possible, since I have had it for over a week already!

Thanks

Sounds like Spysweeper is getting in our way, in its option's tell it not to start with windows then turn the program off.

Uninstall Snowball Wars and go through the instructions again for surfsidekick
(using sidekickfix.bat)

C:\program files\common files\kwro < delete folder
c:\windows\kwro < delete folder
also delete that defender19 file you mentioned

stub_venthh, which I think is a virus. I deleted it. Turns out the defender thing was a kids game install.

I think I may have goofed up the sidekickfix, I tried it a few times. I originally did it for the goofix, but I think some of those files may have been in the folder. Would that goof it up? Sorry to be such a newb.

Its still there, turn off spyware doctor to and in its options set it to not start with windows, repeat the sidekickfix instructions after deleting the contents of c:\bfu folder

Download Brute Force Uninstaller (http://www.merijn.org/files/bfu.zip).
Unzip it to it’s own folder (c:\BFU)
It must be unzipped to the c:\BFU folder (Or the drive windows is installed to, which is normaly C:\)

Rightclick on this link and choose save target as, save sidekickFix.bat to that BFU folder.
====
http://downloads.subratam.org/Lon/sidekickFix.bat
====
Close all browsers, explorer folder's then Run sidekickFix.bat
Choose yes and fallow the prompts, when prompted to restart the PC do so.

I see both avg and norton, Uninstall all but one antivirus program !!
I suggest canning norton.

After the PC has restarted and you are here at the forum make and post a hijackthis log.
