Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.
I apologize for the wait, volunteers are swamped at all forums with infected computers. If you have resolved your issues, please post to let me know so I can close this topic.
If you still need help, and you have read and followed the "Before you Post" directions, post a new HJT log since it has been five days, and I will take a look, please describe any recent symptoms.
Paul, you really need to read the instructions, I posted the link above. When you post a new HJT log make sure this time TeaTimer is disabled as instructed.
C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <<< this is obsolete, uninstall it in Add Remove programs before you post the new HJT log.
Thanks
Paul Jacobson

Paul, the program I asked you to uninstall: AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
was an obsolete program:
http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-spyware-and-anti-rootkit
It appears for some reason, you decided to install AVG 8 antivirus? You are already running McAfee and we do not want two antivirus programs running at once:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/03/AR2005120300087.html
http://www.smartcomputing.com/editorial/article.asp?article=articles/2003/s1407/38s07/38s07.asp
Please uninstall one of those and post a new HJT log once that is done. If you have questions, please ask them. These mistakes are slowing your repair and creating work for me that I don't need, I have many folks waiting for help:sad:
Thanks...Phil

 Very sorry, Phil. I misunderstood. I thought you wanted me to get rid of AVG 7.5 because it was obsolete and I didn't know about conflicts with McAfee. I thought AVG 8 would be ok because I had disabled the two parts of the program that do real-time checking. I just wanted to have it there to run an occasional scan. No problem, it's gone now. Next time I'll ask. Thanks for your patience.
Here is my new HJT log:

Not a problem, just slowed us a little. AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <<< this was a good program but it was not an antivirus program so it would not have conflicted with McAfee. Unfortunately, Grisoft decided to stop giving it away and since it can not be updated (malware changes quickly) it is no longer viable.
1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.
2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use
Download ComboFix from here:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.
*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
Tutorial if needed
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Make sure you let me know.
uTorrent, LimeWire <<< all p2p program must be uninstalled, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282
If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. Help will be withdrawn should you not agree to their removal.
Let's look at the uninstall list first:
Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.
Adobe Reader 7.1.0 <<< out of date and unsafe, see this:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-10081618-83.html?tag=nl.e433
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/
(if you want a smaller program, look at this one)
Foxit Reader 2.3 for Windows (make sure to uncheck any toolbars)
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Both out of date and unsafe, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Be aware of this information so you can opt out of anything you do not want.

LimeWire 4.12.11 <<< p2p program, uninstall.
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5.2.20 <<< uninstall this old version:
Please be sure Spybot S&D is up to date and fully immunized.

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/news/2008-07-08.html
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/index.html
Follow the instructions carefully and in the number order.
1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
2) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:
File::
c:\windows\system32\hepiyoma"
Registry::
Folder::
c:\documents and settings\Dad\Application Data\uTorrent
Save this as CFScript
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.
This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)
3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
(may be gone)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CPMcf0e2483] Rundll32.exe "c:\windows\system32\hepiyoma"
O4 - Global Startup: Google Updater.lnk.disabled
O16 - DPF: {8EF27A70-DD04-11D6-B7F6-00A0C9CD5F8A} -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0001-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.5.0_01) -
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html
(if you still have MBAM you may use it, be sure to update and run it as instructed)
5) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

How is the computer running now?

When I drop CFScript.txt onto ComboFix.exe I get a popup that says trojan Generic.dx was removed and then ComboFix gives me a message saying that McAfee VirusScan is running, but it isn't. I canceled out of ComboFix because I didn't want to screw things up. At what point do you want me to activate Windows Firewall and McAfee monitoring?
Please advise

Oh, In regards to my last post. . . I should say that I did everything up to that point.
O23 - Service: Communication Services (CCOMSVC)
I have no idea what this is. I'm ok with getting rid of it. How?

PSI <<< installed and updated my outdated programs.
How do I turn it off in MSConfig?

Paul, McAfee is the program that allowed the junk on the computer, combofix is the program that is trying to remove that junk. Please follow the directions to run CFScript, I need to see the log that is created when it runs. Do what you have to to stop McAfee, right click the red M in the System Tray and click exit or what ever is required.
Thank you.

OK, so here is my CFScript log from ComboFix, MBAM log and HJT log.
Frankly, I don't know how my machine is running. I'm afraid to do anything because at this point my malware and spyware programs are disabled, Windows firewall is disabled and I had to actually REMOVE McAfee from my system in order to get ComboFix to run. Since McAffee allowed the virus(es) to infect my machine is it best to install a different program? I'll rely on your best judgement.
Let me know what you'd like me to do next. You're the greatest!
Thanks, Paul

Hi Paul, thanks for the feedback and returning your information. The decision about what antivirus program to use is yours. I will say I used McAfee for years and only dropped it when I complained about the size and amount of resources it was using and was told nothing could be done by technical support. Keep in mind we deal now with organized crime and they have nothing to do by count money and figure ways to infect you and only a bullet will stop them.
Let's try this and see how it goes...
Read about this junk, I see no uninstaller so I will use CFScript to remove it.
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.

http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_137262.htm
1) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to Service: Communication Services and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.
2) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:
File::
C:\WINDOWS\CComSvc.exe
Folder::
c:\program files\Viewpoint
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\Viewpoint
Save this as CFScript
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.
This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.
Post the log from CFScript and a new HJT log, if all goes well we should be able to wrap up at this point.
Thanks
Paul Jacobson

Here are the ComboFix list and a new HJT as requested.
Before we wrap up, here are some other things that need some attention:
1-Every time I shut down, the shut down box gives me this option:
"Click Turn Off to install improtant updates and turn off your computer. Click here to turn off without installing updates." If I select to do the updates it appears to be updating windows and then shuts off normally. But every time I shut down I get the same message, so apparently the Windows update doesn't work.
2-There are a few programs on here that I have no clue if I either need them or want to keep. If you know anything about any of these please let me know; if not I can do some surfing to find out what they are:
AOL Instant Messenger <<< I've tried to remove this with Add/Remove Programs but it crashes saying that a file is missing. I can't remove it. Please help me on this one.
AIM 6 <<< We don't do instant messaging, is this good for anything else?
Business Contact Mgr for Outllok 2007
Calculator Power Toy for Windows XP
DAO
Download Updater
3-Finally, finding the right mix of virus, malware and adware protection programs to protect my computer is a daunting task. Up 'till now I have used McAfee Security Center, Ad-Aware, SpyBot and AVG. I've had McAfee and SpyBot do the active monitoring.
Since I can't use AVG with McAfee now, I'm even more confused. Could you give some suggestions, or perhaps point me to a source that can help me determine what's the best combination for my needs. Which ones I want to do active monitoring, etc. I don't have hours and hours to surf the net comparing this product to that. In my case cost of programs is a minor issue. I want good protection.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks for all your help, Phil, you've been a LIFE SAVER!!! :cowboy:

I can use CFScript to remove programs you can not uninstall but it is much better to use the uninstallers to do this. As far as your programs, I won't begin to pretend I know all programs, if you don't know them or use them, then uninstall then.
1) See this: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
If you don't find the answer there, then go here:
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (All Languages)
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&prid=11273&gprid=522131
I suggest you say it started with SP3.
2) Once you have done all you can, let me know what else you want gone and I will use CFScript to do this. We will have to leave combofix installed until this is done.
3) I usually post this information at closing but will post it now. Once you have read what experts suggest, if you still have questions, let me know.
Must have at the very least: Antivirus, Firewall, Anti-Spyware.

I removed some programs, updated others, and turned on Antivirus, Firewall, and Anti-Spyware. I left Tea-Timer off, however, so we could finish up. I'm planning on running McAfee, Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware all the time, and the others as needed to clean up. For firewalls I'm running Windows and McAfee.
I think I'm finally free of virus and malware. (whew)
Maybe I should do one last check???
The Windows support group helped me solve the Windows update problem. Thanks for the link.
I believe the only thing left unfinished is removing AOL Instant Messenger. Neither the unisntaller in Start/All Programs or Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs works. I would appreciate if you could help me ComboFix it.
Looks like were about finished!
Thanks, Paul

Reads those links from experts for good advice as to how to secure your computer. While there is no silver bullet, good layered protection coupled with good online surfing habits will go a long way towards keeping you safe online.
For firewalls I'm running Windows and McAfee
If McAfee is providing a firewall, turn off the Windows firewall, you only want one so they don't get in each others way.

Post a new HJT log and tell me exactly what you wish to do.
Thanks

Thanks again for your help.
HJT shows two entries for >>> C:\Documents and Settings\Dad\Desktop\Yahoo!\Messenger\YahooMessenger.exe (file missing) <<< but the Add or Remove Programs doesn't show Yahoo Messenger as being installed. Just wondering if they are ok being left there or should be removed.
In Program Files directory there is an old, old AIM folder. In Add or Remove Programs there is an entry for AOL Instant Messenger. When I try to remove it the program crashes, saying that a file is missing. I would like the AOL Instant Messenger program removed.
That's it. Here is my new HJT log:

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:
Folder::
c:\program files\AIM6
C:\Documents and Settings\Dad\Desktop\Yahoo!
Save this as CFScript
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.
This may start ComboFix again. If that works for you, I really don't need to see the CFScript log and you can proceed like this.
Remove combofix from the computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png
Clean the System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, update it and run it once a month or so)
Update McAfee and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.

If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close the topic.
