View Full Version : I've acquired "Virtumonde"

ILLZNIK31
2009-02-01, 19:23
Spybot S&D scan revealed 3 different "versions": Virtumonde.sci, virtumonde, and virtumonde.generic. The program was able to repair everything and I was able to turn on automatic updates (that had been the prevelant symptom). I thought it was fixed until I rebooted and now I can't turn on automatic updates again. I figure you guys need a log of some sort, but I don't know what log or where to locate it. Thanks in advance for any help!

My apologies, I read the "read this before posting" post AFTER i had posted. I'm sorry... after having read that, I have now backed up the registry with erunt, and here is the HijackThis log:

"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

I apologize for the wait, volunteers are swamped at all forums with infected computers. If you have resolved your issues, please post to let me know so I can close this topic.

If you still need help, and you have read and followed the "Before you Post" directions, post a new HJT log since it has been four days, and I will take a look, please describe any recent symptoms.

I run AVG 8 free, why are you running an out of date antivirus program?

Thanks

Hi, thanks for the response. Yes, I still need help. The symptoms are as follows: Windows Automatic Updates has turned itself off and cannot be turned back on. Overall computer operation is slow, but not terrible. When using Firefox, I will get random full-sized pop ups. Sometimes these are advertisements for anti-virus programs, sometimes they are blank pages with URL's that start with what look like IP addresses. I have been using the machine as little as possible. I've had it disconnected from the internet for the last 4 days. I am unsure as to why I'm running an old AVG edition. I have it set to install new updates and scan daily, I guess I thought it would always update itself. Thank you so much for any help, here is the new HJT log:

If you run free AVG, you need to update. The old version must be removed first. Wait until the malware is gone and I will post links and instructions.

1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

Download ComboFix from here:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Tutorial if needed
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Adobe Reader 8.1.2 <<< out of date and unsafe, see this:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-10081618-83.html?tag=nl.e433
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/
(if you want a smaller program, look at this one)
Foxit Reader 2.3 for Windows (make sure to uncheck any toolbars)
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

BitComet 0.85 <<< Uninstall all p2p programs
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282

If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. Help will be withdrawn should you not agree to their removal.

Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
All out of date and unsafe, see this:

Follow the directions carefuly and in the numbered order.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=-

Save this as CFScript

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. I do not need to see that log this time.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O8 - Extra context menu item: &D&ownload &with BitComet - res://C:\Program Files\BitComet\BitComet.exe/AddLink.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: &D&ownload all video with BitComet - res://C:\Program Files\BitComet\BitComet.exe/AddVideo.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: &D&ownload all with BitComet - res://C:\Program Files\BitComet\BitComet.exe/AddAllLink.htm
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: podpcs.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

5) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

How is the computer running now?

Thanks

A few things:

Before running the ATF cleaner for the first time I went ahead and uninstalled all the programs you said were out of date and unsafe. Because of this (I think), the HJT did not pick up these things:

O8 - Extra context menu item: &D&ownload &with BitComet - res://C:\Program Files\BitComet\BitComet.exe/AddLink.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: &D&ownload all video with BitComet - res://C:\Program Files\BitComet\BitComet.exe/AddVideo.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: &D&ownload all with BitComet - res://C:\Program Files\BitComet\BitComet.exe/AddAllLink.htm
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: podpcs.dll

I proceeded with the instructions from that point on. I just downloaded the malwarebytes program. I checked for updates but the connection the program tries to make does not occur. It says it is checking, but it never finishes the process, and the progress bar does not move. It doesn't necessarily freeze, because I can close it out promptly. I'm running a scan as directed right now. Please advise if anything I have done thus far is incorrect. Thank you again.

It's unusual for MBAM to find nothing. The database is slightly larger: 1654/1731, did you run the Full scan? Seems 20 minutes is very fast, a scan on my computers takes a bit over one hour.
Let's see if we can get AVG updated.
I can tell you from experience that the old version has to be uninstalled first.

Read these instructions in case you wish to save these resources:
How to Install Free version AVG 8.0 without LinkScanner feature
http://russelltexas.com/tutorials/avg8install.htm

Download the installer for AVG 8 and save it to your Desktop from here:
http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
AVG Free <<< if you want the free version, make sure to Download the correct one.

Once you have the installer downloaded to the Desktop, then you can go offline until you have the new version installed.

Now uninstall the old version in Add Remove programs, then restart the computer.

Once you are running again, double click the installer on the Desktop and follow the prompts.

Once AVG 8 is installed and updated, then scan your system.

* Click on Computer Scanner then choose "Scan whole computer", this takes about one hour on the computer I am using now.

* Near the bottom above the words "The scan is complete" choose "Export overview to file"

* Choose Desktop and give it a name you will recognize like AVG Scan Results, then choose SAVE.

* Close results and close the Interface.

* Copy and paste the contents of that file unless it is clean, along with a new HJT log.

Tell me how the computer is running.

Thanks

Yes, I performed the whole scan with MBAM. I just finished updating AVG and scanning; the scan came back clean, aside from a number of "warnings" (tracking cookies). The machine seems to be running perfectly fine in my limited experience (the last 10 minutes). I CAN turn on automatic updates, and it DOES stay on through a reboot, unlike before. I have not encountered any of the pop ups that were occurring before this process. Seems as though I'm clean, would you agree? I did save the scan results to my desktop if you're interested in seeing them.

Sounds good to me, here is information to help you control those junk cookies:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/cookies.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/howto/privacy/config.mspx

Let's see if we can wrap up like this...

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

(you can make the next two scans optional if you wish)

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, update it and run it once a month or so)

Update AVG 8 and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.

Well, I thought all was well. I removed combofix and cleaned the restore history. I set AVG to scan everyday at 5 AM, so I checked that scan just out of curiosity, and it found 38 infections!

I will have to say it appears somehow the directions did not get followed
combofix quarantine should have been removed (along with combofix) and the System Restore files AVG is finding should have been removed with the instructions I posted here:
Clean the System Restore files like this:

To be sure this is done, follow these direction:

1) Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

To be sure the stuff is gone, look on the C:\ for this:
C:\Qoobox <<< delete that folder and any content.

FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS AGAIN AND VERY CAREFULLY:

Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Could part of the problem be that I can't update MBAM? I click on Update and the connection with malwarebytes.org just hangs. It makes no progress at all.

Sorry for the confusion... the scan results I posted from AVG took place at 5 A.M., before I had uninstalled combofix and cleaned the registry.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/ << see if you can access this website. If you can then remove the old version of MBAM and download it again from
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Then see if you can get the updates you need.

Thanks

I was able to access the malwarebytes site. I uninstalled the old program as well as the old setup icon, and rebooted. Upon reboot I re-downloaded malwarebytes. The last page of the setup screen prompts you to update the program and then launch. The same problem as before is present again. The update screen comes up, and says "Looking for malwarebytes.org", but makes no progress. I let it try for ~10 minutes and there's no movement whatsoever.

This is a new one on me, since I am basically a user of MBAM just as you are, why not ask about the issue here:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/

These folks know the tool and will be better at advising you.

Thanks:)

OK will do... thanks. Were you implying earlier those infections that AVG found are not threats because they have since been deleted by cleaning the registry and uninstalling combofix? The computer still seems to be running well, not great. No other issues, however. I'm leaving for work right now and will be back tonight, at which point I will report back with the results of another AVG scan and hopefully an update from the MBAM forum regarding the update issue. The items in the combofix quarantine and the infected System Restore files will no longer exist once the directions are followed. The tracking cookies should not be allowed on your computer, you do have the choice.

Thanks

OK, then I will run a scan tonight and see what happens. I've posted on the MBAM forum regarding the update issue as well. I'll report back tonight. Thank you again for all your help, it is sincerely appreciated.

With help from the MBAM forum, it turns out the update problem was an IE configuration. I was able to update and scan, returning no problems. I also updated and ran another AVG scan and returned no problems. I think I'm clean! Thank you again for your help...

As for where to go from here... I plan on using the secunia program to ensure that everything I'm running is up to date. Would that program also monitor Java? I was unaware that when I updated to the new version it never removed/replaced the old one. As for controlling the cookies, the links you provided are specifically for IE, not firefox, which is what I use. Does it still apply or is there a better link for me to follow?

Thanks for letting me know about MBAM, I am glad they were able to help you resolve that issue.

Secunia PSI questions: http://secunia.com/community/forum/
Yes it does check Java.

Mozilla Firefox. look at the information I post carefully, the last links in my post #13 apply to Firefox.

Thanks

Alright, I've set up cookies so that Firefox asks me everytime one is attempted. I've downloaded spywareblaster, which is now running. I've replaced the windows firewall with Online Armor, and I'm running the updated version of AVG. Once in a while I'll run a scan with MBAM, as well. That looks pretty good right? One thing I'm wondering about is that it seems this computer is still running a bit slower than it used to. Could that be because I'm disabling alot of cookies?
