My computer is infested with the virtumonde and other sorts and I'm just considering wiping the whole thing out and reinstalling windows. I've been meaning to do it for a while and this gives me decent reason. Question is, is it possible for the viruses and malware to get onto an external hardrive while i'm transfering over all my music and pictures? Thanks for the help y'all.

If you transfer infected files to an external device and then transfer those infected files back to your primary drive after cleaning the primary drive, yes it is possible reinfect the primary drive. That is how several classes of malware propagates to begin with.
You have t o make sure that any file that any file that you intend to transfer back to the primary drive is clean before it is transferred to the external drive.
