SpyBot S&D scan found Virtumonde.sci. I have tried the suggestions posted to others with the same problem. Virtumonde.sci persisted. I could not get Safe Mode to open. I downloaded and used Erunt; following is Hijack This log. Thank you for any and all help. (My computer was once used in a business but it was discarded and I received it. It is my personal computer.)

Hello Onfohtom,

Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at your own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

Thanks for waiting, the forums are very busy

Do a few things for me please
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe<--Go here and right click on Hijackthis.exe and Rename it to Onfohtom.exe

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.

Thank you for getting to my problem. I have followed your instructions up until completing the Malwarebytes scan. The software locks up at the point after it has searched the memory files (0 infestation). Task manager says program is not responding. I'm thinking I should reboot the computer (it is also slower) but did not want to without your okay. I am attaching a current HJT log just in case it will be of use to you. Thank you again.

Hi,

Lets run Malwarebytes in Safemode

To Enter Safemode

Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode with Networking
Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard

I followed your last set of instructions and all went well until opening in safe mode. The screen locked up - screen all black except a white bar close to the bottom that stretched from right to left not reaching the right side. Words: "Windows is starting..." above the bar. I waited a full five minutes in that status before rebooting. What now O Cap-pe-tahn?

Try this, it won't remove anything but I need to see the report

Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Hi,

No Vundo or anything else for that matter.

MostFun Game Player <-----Getting mixed results on this one, if you don't use it uninstall it via the Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
Tutorial for System Restore (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial56.html) <-- Do this first to prevent yourself from being reinfected.

GeeksTo Go (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?autocom=custom&page=How_did_I)
Dslreports (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10002)

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn
Ken

I use MostFun Game Player (Chicktionary) daily. (I was playing while I was waiting for your reply.)
I read all the info on your list in the days prior to and after my first post.
I have run Spybot every week and also Norton AV for years. The virtuemonde.sci is the first instance of infection since I don't know when (a long time). Since I have read on your site that Yahoo is in cahoots with the bad guys (?) and I went to Yahoo once to check on email in a rarely used account there in the time frame between scans, and you asked me to delete something to do with yahoo, then I am thinking that's how I became infected. In the five days that I waited for a reply from you, I changed that email address to hotmail and I don't intend to ever go back to yahoo. I did not click on anything there (at yahoo) except the particular email I was looking for.
Should I now reopen teatimer and do another Spybot scan to see if the virtuemonde.sci is gone? If it is, do I then do a system restore? Thank you again for your help.

Hello,

I never said anything about Yahoo being in cahots with the bad guys, I use Yahoo mail almost exclusively.

This is not a Yahoo site, you were redirected there.
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html

If you install SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster, keep the TeaTimer in Spybot disabled.

You should run Spybot and remove what it finds....REBOOT... and run another scan, it may take a time or two until it comes up clean.

You had nothing bad on your logs so no need to flush out System Restore.

Ken:)

No, you never said anything about yahoo. It was in something I read while waiting after my first post last Tuesday, 020308. If it is important, I can track down the quote.
I will try SpyBot now and if needed a couple of more times but I will be back in touch after that with a final HJT log.
I really appreciate your time and attention. Thanks for the good job. :bigthumb:

Great,

Yahoo is a very reputable company, not to worry. I have been at this for almost 7 years and if I suspected Yahoo as being involved with malware I would not use it.

Just remember, any search engine that you use, Yahoo, Google, Windows Live will sometimes bring you to bad sites, there not immune , sometimes the bad guys infect legit sites, so you have to be real careful.

Take Care,
Ken:)

Ken545, what I don't understand is why does that address take us to yahoo? I googled the "red.clientapps" to try and find out more about it and I was routed immediately to yahoo. How is that not yahoo? Why would IE take us to yahoo voluntarily? Regards,
