I've got a nasty virus or malware issue on my PC and would really appreciate any help you can provide.

Cannot run Spybot.exe (shows in the processes, but no window). Cannot download updates from popular antivirus/spyware programs, FireFox cannot get to the pages "Address Not Found" - including http://www.safer-networking.org/. Cannot download any Windows updates. I can get to many other sites such as this one.

Google search result links take me to other sites (not the intended result).

PC Tools cleaned up a bunch of stuff, but not obviously not everything. Advised I had to manually remove MS04-28 - but I don't know where to start.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

I apologize for the wait, volunteers are swamped at all forums with infected computers. If you have resolved your issues, please post to let me know so I can close this topic.

If you still need help, and you have read and followed the "Before you Post" directions, post a new HJT log since it has been four days, and I will take a look, please describe any recent symptoms.

O1 - Hosts: 209.167.184.226 gateway.betabrands.com <<< did you put this in your hosts file?

C:\Documents and Settings\Brad\Desktop\HiJackThis.exe <<< this is not where the instructions say to locate HJT.
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis <<< correct location (read the directions)

BitComet <<< be aware all p2p programs must be uninstalled:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282

If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. Help will be withdrawn should you not agree to their removal.

Thanks

Thank you for your time and response.

I've read the links and removed BitComet and LimeWire from my PC. I've also deleted the antivirus and other spyware programs from my PC that were not able to be updated or clean the infection.

I've downloaded, installed and ran ERUNT to backup registry.
I've deleted old version of Hijack this and reinstalled new version in correct directory.

Regarding "O1 - Hosts: 209.167.184.226 gateway.betabrands.com <<< did you put this in your hosts file?"
Yes, years ago my previous employer had me add this to access work servers from home. I no longer require it.

No new symptoms. Machine doesn't seem slower, just cannot update windows, antivirus or other spyware programs including Spybot S&D. All google search result links redirect me to other sites, and I swear somewhere along the way it took me to a fake google page, "google english" - but a haven't seen it again.

Below is the new HijackThis log file. Thanks again for your help.

I apologize, the notification I was supposed to receive when you posted did not come:sad: If that should occur again while we work together, and you do not receive an answer within 12 hours, PM me to let me know: http://forums.spybot.info/private.php?do=newpm&u=233

There is nothing showing in the HJT log, let's take a look like this.

1) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

2) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe <<< download

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file, the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfraudfix and a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Tutorial if needed:
http://www.techsupportteam.org/forum/tutorials/2282-malwarebytes-anti-malware-mbam.html

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Thank you. Here are the files.

Malwarebytes wouldn't update (part of the virus issue), and didn't find anything. I'm sure I downloaded a codec I wasn't supposed to, and that is why it is doing what it is.

Thank you again for your time looking at this, much appreciated!

Thanks for returning your information, Smitfraudfix found the infection and it also found this:
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» hosts
hosts file corrupted !
After we clean, in the next C:\rapport.txt, there may be a very large hosts file (items starting with 127.0.0.1) and I do not need to see it. Edit (remove) it from the C:\rapport.txt before you post it.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infected files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log.

This can be done as time permits, but it is important.
Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:

Performed SmitfraudFix option 2 in safe mode, still having issues

windows update takes me to a Google English site, when I retype in windows update site address again, I get another google page

Google Error
Not Found
The requested URL /windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx was not found on this server.

I think these are fake google pages as I've never heard of Google English before.

Here is the SmitFraudFix rapport.txt (I didn't delete the 127.0.0.... as there was only a handfull of them and the HJT log.

Thanks again for your time and expertise!

1) Are you using a router?
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2008/06/malware_silently_alters_wirele_1.html

2) What are you using for your antivirus program? I saw PCTools in the first HJT log, do you need links to a good freeware program.

3) You may remove (delete) Smitfraudfix, we are finished with it.

4) Let's have combofix take a look:

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

Download ComboFix from here:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Tutorial if needed

Thanks

Okay, that seems to have fixed everything, it even successfully completed a windows update! No more redirecting on google search results either.

I am using a DLink wireless router. This PC is plugged directly into the router.

If you can suggest a good Antivirus, I've tried most free ones, my issue with them is they slow my machine down and the last one i tried, PCTools, was removing all attachments from work emails, even the email text itself - and I know they weren't infected. What one would you use?

Thanks again for your time with this, I will definitely donate!

I am using a DLink wireless router
Did you review the information in the link I posted?

If you can suggest a good Antivirus, I've tried most free ones
I personally use AVG 8 Free but here are three good freeware programs to choose from.

1) http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
How to Install Free version AVG 8.0 without LinkScanner feature
http://russelltexas.com/tutorials/avg8install.htm

2) http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
What's new in avast! version 4
http://www.avast.com/eng/whats_new_in_avast_v2.html

3) http://www.free-av.com/
http://www.free-av.com/en/support/index.html

Unless you have another plan, install one antivirus program, update then scan the system and post the results unless there are clean. Post also a new HJT log, I would like to see the antivirus program running before I wrap up.

Thanks
