I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop running Windows XP Home edition that appears to be infected with some sort of malware. I can only start it in safe mode. Starting it up normally leads the machine to lock up in a matter of moments. Here is the Hijack This log I ran on this machine. Please help at your earliest convenience:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

I apologize for the wait, volunteers are swamped at all forums with infected computers. If you have resolved your issues, please post to let me know so I can close this topic.

If you still need help, and you have read and followed the "Before you Post" directions, post a new HJT log since it has been five days, and I will take a look, please describe any recent symptoms.

You are infected but it appears you missed the directions, if you still want help, before you post another HJT log, do this.

1) C:\HijackThis.exe <<< unsafe location, read the instructions and download it again to the located in the insdtructions:
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

2) System Configuration Untility (MSConfig) is in Selective Startup mode, return it to Normal Mode until we finish.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I have been unable to start this laptop in the manner you have asked. I can not start it any longer, not even in safe mode. Since this became an issue, I removed the hard drive from the laptop and slaved it via USB to my desktop PC. I ran an AVG scan on the drive and after about 4 hours, it found several trojans, such as GENERIC12.BIJE. It was unable to clean it fully, as AVG encountered a Windows delayed write error with the slaved drive at that point in the scan. Is there another manner for me to work with the physical hard drive from the laptop and clean it now that I can slave it to my desktop PC? Attached is a zipped .CSV file of the scan results for your review.

Thanks for the feedback, you have a real problem here. I asked at least twice for you to read the directions, I will post that link again.
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288

All logs should be copy/pasted into topic and not attached unless requested by helper in that format.

Please do not post information I do not request.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

Moving hard drives from computer to computer is not in my area of expertise, you may want to take this computer to a local technician for advise. If you wish to attempt to run malware tools:

Note: If you have lost your Internet connection on the infected computer, or otherwise cannot post from that machine; you can download HJT to a clean PC if one is available. You can also try this if malware is blocking your access to security forums and tools.
Upload to infected machine
Place HJT into own folder
Run HJT on the infected PC and post the log you produce using the clean PC.

You can wait to move HJT to the correct location. Keep in mind combofix is almost 3 MB's when you are downloading it to an uninfected computer.

1) System Configuration Untility (MSConfig) is in Selective Startup mode, return it to Normal Mode until we finish.

2) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

3) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

Download ComboFix from here:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

PSKelley, I re-installed the hard drive back into the laptop, ran ComboFix.exe while in Safe Mode, as this was the only way to get this machine up and running. Tried to stop AVG before ComboFix started running, but was unable to stop it before ComboFix took off running. Listed below is the information you requested. Since the malware had disabled my Internet connection and browser, I did not attempt to connect to the Internet with the infected laptop to download the Microsoft Recovery Console. After running ComboFix, the laptop is now up and running, however, I did not want to chance connecting it to the Internet until you could review the logs you requested and hear back from you.

Good job getting combofix to run and we still have much to do. Don't be concerned with Recovery Console just now, we can deal with that once the computer is clean. Please read an follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order.

1) You are running System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) in Selective Startup mode, please return it to Normal Mode for the NEXT HJT LOG. You may return to Selective Startup without a restart if you wish.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nse14.dll
c:\windows\system32\TDSScfum.dll
c:\windows\system32\gnbvurbx.ini
c:\windows\system32\cont_worldadmarketplace-remove.exe
c:\windows\system32\rkmbfmiist.exe
c:\windows\system32\kyogclgg.ini
c:\windows\system32\chorwubu.ini

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=-

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{efec8b93-e94e-11dc-ab2d-0016e30aa7f1}]

Save this as CFScript

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(items may be gone, removed by CFScript)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: worldadmarketplace - {b56864b2-f9cf-156d-4bfb-d7d980e52ee2} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nse14.dll
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: gduuln.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

6) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe <<< download
(2.74 MB's)

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

How is the computer running?

Thanks

Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP,
Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)

pskelley, thanks for all of your support and assistance. The laptop is now up and active in normal startup mode and is doing much better than before. I have not connected it up to the Internet yet, as I'm awaiting your review of these logs. Listed below is the information you requested. Please review and advise me of any next steps.

Thanks again!!

Everything is looking good from here, make sure as soon as you go online you update your antivirus program. Review the links I post for additional suggestions to add to your security. I see no firewall running, read about the Windows firewall. While it is better than none:

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:

Mozilla Firefox (3.0.5) <<< update is available

Let's see if we can wrap up like this...

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, update it and run it once a month or so)

Update AVG 8 and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean.

pskelley, thanks a lot for your help. The laptop has finally been cleared of all rogue programs and is humming along nicely. It took another scan of MalwareBytes to clear everything. All is wel now and this thread can be closed. I really appreciate the clean-up tips, too. Thanks again!!
