Ran HijackThis, updated & ran the current Spybot S&D, and cleaned up some viscious nasties. However, our cursor still freezes, and memory usage under Processes is running at twice what they used to.
This is a current run of HijackThis:

Hi Lisa, welcome back to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
Also, do you know where I can find out what everything running in Processes under Task Manager does?
Use Google to investigate or one of these links:
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm
http://computercops.biz/StartupList.html
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/
Here is some good information also that will help:
http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_xp.html
http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutorials/runningslowly.php
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html
http://www.microsoft.com/atwork/getstarted/speed.mspx
Let's have a look for junk, follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order:
1) How much RAM is install on this computer?
Right click MyComputer then click Properties. On the General tab in the lower right corner is the RAM, post that information.
2) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)
3) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat <<< right click the link and choose "Save target as...
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).
4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html
7) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

How is the computer running now?
8) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Hi & Good Morning Phil! Thanks so much for taking the time to help me.
A couple of things:
1) We have 512 MB of RAM.
2) Should I register at Tech Support Team, or is there a way to review the information without registering? If so, on the registration screen it asks for the name of refererr; may I put yours (if you're registered)?;
3) I currently have "Version 3.0.0.2 of ATF Cleaner.exe, Copyrt 2005 " on my system. Should I remove it & download a new one?
4) Lastly, currently upon reboot we get a "System32.RootAutoCheck.exe" error. Should that be fixed prior to running through your corrective steps?
Will download "ResetTeaTimer.bat" and "Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware " in the meantime.

Er, I am getting a HTTP 404 Error for ResetTeaTimer.bat (http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat) when I try to go to the site to download. Is it just my IE, or is that real?

1) That may be enough Ram but it sure is not too much, here is information:
http://www.crucial.com/support/howmuch.aspx
Adding RAM to increase computer speed - Video Tip
http://www.helpmerick.com/adding_ram_increase_computer_speed_video_tip.htm
For instance, I do no fancy computing or gaming and I have 1.25 GB's, 2 1/2 times as much as you.
2) Tech Support Team <<< not sure what you mean?
3) ATF-Cleaner: You may as well use the newest free version, here is a tutorial.
http://www.nutnworks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1925
4) The error should go with the malware, if not I need the error "word for word" just as Windows gives it to you.
5) ResetTeaTimer.bat <<< which clears the TeaTimer memory is unavailable just now. I believe the creator is updating the tool to work also with Vista. We will have to work without it.
Continue with the balance of the instructions, if we have a problem with TeaTimer we will just uninstall Spybot S&D if necessary.
Thanks...Phil

Well Phil, looks like both our days have gone from bad to worse. Tried to install the newest Spybot (1.6.2?) & it failed, tried to run regular Spybot and got a red-X-button error message: "SpybotSD.exe - Unable to Locate Component...This application has failed to start because sqlite3.dll was not found. Reinstalling may fix..." . Am going to attempt to remove both programs and install the latest version of SpybotSD.
Tried to download the new ATF & it never finished as far as I can tell.

Re:

I was responding to this: "Tutorial if needed:

Very confusing I know. I'm off to see what else I can break on this thing, will check back with you later. Take it easy!!

Why don't you wait until we get the junk off the computer, then if you still have issues installing the newest version of Spybot S&D, experts who work with the program all of the time can assist you here:
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4
You can leave that Yahoo junk if you wish, see what it is:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#RDiag
Those have nothing to do with your internet connection, Yahoo put them there to keep you looking at their advertisments. It's not malware, just worthless junk. The other R1's I had you remove are adware, and yes Yahoo is in bed with the enemy.
If you would just finish what I asked you to do, then post a new HJT log and the uninstall list I requested. Please mention who the computer is running.
Thanks

How can I get this direction followed?
2) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:

I followed your instructions as indicated, but it didn't seem to take. Spybot S&D, in advanced mode, still showed Resident unchecked before I went to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and removed it. It did flash a window that said "Spybot S&D uninstall complete. Some elements cold not be removed. These can be removed manually." Once I did a restart and had the system up, a Spybot icon ("spybotsd162") remained on the screen. When you click it, it goes to a setup wizard window to setup SpybotSD 1.6.2. Will right-clicking & selecting "delete" remove it? Spybot's no longer listed as a currently installed program when I look in Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs.

I am not seeing malware in this HJT log: Scan saved at 8:38:36 PM, on 2/16/2009, how is the computer running?
Clean the System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, update it and run it once a month or so)
Update Symantec and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.
If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close the topic.

O.k., weirdness. (Performance has been currently the same as it recently has been (lots of process memory & the cursor freezing if more than one tab open in IE.))
This morning, first system start up fine, nothing unusual. After a while while on-line, system (cursor actually) froze, forcing restart. Computer didn't restart. Had to let it sit. Once I hit the power on the CPU to start, computer put up message: "Alert! Previous shutdown due to thermal event. F1: continue, F2 setup utility."
So as I'm sitting her contemplating what to do, that message goes away and is replaced by one that asks what mode I want to restart and said something about, "...last known that worked successfully...start up normally". That went away, and The Windows logo/startup comes up, followed by the system then being up. The usual Norton pop-up balloons warning no Firewall or Virus Protection is active (which last time I checked they were), and the Dell File window comes up.
Closed the Dell windows & came here to let you know what's going on. Your "not enough RAM" is sounding more & more right. Am going to investigate how to get more, and removing those out-of-date programs.
Thank you for all you're doing to help!

Alert! Previous shutdown due to thermal event
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Alert%21+Previous+shutdown+due+to+thermal+event&btnG=Search
Sounds like overheating, when was the last time you blew the dirt out of the computer with clean air?
I am assuming this is a Desktop computer.
http://www.computerhope.com/cleaning.htm
With all this going on is it safe to do system restore?
If you are having overheating and other hardware issues, a new restore point is not going to correct that situation.
I suggest you post here, then describe the issues, they may repeat stuff I have already said. They work more with other issues than malware.
http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?showforum=3
Register free and if they ask you to run the free diagnostic, please do so. There is no reason to purchase anything.
Thanks

Wow, never (re: clean inside CPU). Will go ahead and do that, then check out the PC Pitstop Forums for more info on getting it running smoothly.
Since it appears all the malware is gone, I guess we're good. Will wait to download a new spybotSD until after I've checked out the PC Pitstop Forums. Have a lot to figure out here re: clean up of old programs, what security works and that friggin' cursor freeze, so I'm off! Wish me luck, and thank you for all your help. It is really & truly appreciated! :D:

what security works and that friggin' cursor freeze,
That could mean you need to update the mouse driver also. Visit the website of your mouse and look for the newest driver.

Q: RE: System Restore: Am I supposed to run MBAM immediately after restoring the "System Restore", and do I need to turn off Symantec before I proceed.
Got some compressed air & will be cleaning the box out today.
From MY COMPUTER(>)properties> hardware>device manager>mice = HID compliant mouse. Is that a generic name?
MY COMPUTER(>)properties> hardware>device manager>display adapter = Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller. Related?
Is there any other place on the computer other than these that I can find out what type/model no. this mouse is? The Dell logo is stamped on the top of the mouse itself.
Thanks,

Q: RE: System Restore: Am I supposed to run MBAM immediately after restoring the "System Restore", and do I need to turn off Symantec before I proceed. As I said once, I do not think it will do you any good to use System Restore. You can run MBAM whenever you wish but it is just one tool and deals with rouge malware. If anything in the database is on the computer, it would find and remove it, is not...we run it for specific infections.
If you have a Dell mouse, ask Dell Support those questions.

Thanks
