I see you've been getting a lot of virtumonde problems. I've run spybot and AdAware and my Trend Micro Anti-Virus. I first noticed something weird because I got a dll warning, and then adds started popping up, particularly something wanting to scan my computer for viruses. If someone could help me that would be great.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

For your benefit, the instructions are pinned (sticky) to the top of the Malware Removal forum, please read and be sure you have followed those instructions. I have also posted the "Before you Post" instructions at the top of this thread.

1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

Download ComboFix from here:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Tutorial if needed
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Hi pskelley, thank you so much for responding so fast. I saw there were a lot of people and was fully prepared to wait a few days. I have read the before you post thread. Before I came here I turned off system restore because my antivirus said it couldn't scan the problem completely otherwise. I knew that seemed wacky and should have listened to my gut.

I'm having problems downloading combofix. I saved combotfix.exe to my desktop, but when I double click on it and press run nothing happens. I've waited several minutes in case it was just slow.

I have new symptoms now too, in case that matters. My wallpaper has been changed (I recognized that from the info spybot gave me) and "Task manager has been disabled by your administrator."

I didn't want to try to download it again or anything without advice.

Thank you.

Oh yes, and sorry for the typo in the thread title. Meant TinyBar.

We need to get combofix to run, it is probably the malware blocking it. Try deleting it and downloading it again, this time change the name like this:
You must rename it before saving it, save it to your Desktop.
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/combofix/CF_download_rename.gif

If that does not do it, then boot into Safe Mode and run it there.

Renaming it worked! That was pretty awesome, thanks. I got a message that it detected rootkit activity and needed to reboot. I did write down the files first, if you need them.

Good job getting combofix to run:bigthumb: hold of to that list of rootkits, we need to make sure they are all removed during the process.
What about the Uninstall list...instructions #3, did you miss that?

Please read and follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order.

1) c:\program files\gimpshop_2.2.8_setup.exe <<< do you know what this is?

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Save this as CFScript

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(items may be gone, removed by CFScript)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...lion&pf=laptop
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\Lhemutafuzacan.dll",e
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: fqbdqo.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

6) Download [B]Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Also, I want to double check about step 3. Should I get a HickjackThis log at the end of step 3 before moving on to step 4, such that I end up posting for you two HijackThis logs by the time I am done (since step 6 also asks for a new HijackThis log)? Or do you just want one at the end? When it says to wait until I finish to post the logs, I assume that means finish all the instructions.

Thank you for your patience.

I only need one HJT log created after everything else is finished (except the uninstall list)

This can be done as time permits, but it is important.
Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Adobe Reader 7.0.8 <<< out of date and unsafe, see this:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-10081618-83.html?tag=nl.e433
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/
(if you want a smaller program, look at this one)
Foxit Reader 2.3 for Windows (make sure to uncheck any toolbars)
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

GIMPshop 2.2.8 <<< this is the item I asked about?
2006-09-06 20:41 7,708,988 ----a-w c:\program files\gimpshop_2.2.8_setup.exe
This was just installed a while ago.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=GIMPshop+2.2.8&btnG=Search
Does not look like malware?

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update <<< out of dafe and unsafe, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Be aware of this information so you can opt out of anything you do not want.
Microsoft Does MSN Toolbar Distribution Deal With Java:
http://searchengineland.com/microsoft-does-msn-toolbar-distribution-deal-with-java-15413.php

Mozilla Firefox (1.0.2) <<< if you are going to run Firefox, I would run the newest, safest version:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4 <<< uninstall this old version.
Please be sure Spybot S&D is up to date and fully immunized.

Thank you for the advice about the uninstall list. I will be sure to take care of it. This laptop's getting old, and I wasn't always the only user, and I never thought about the old junk on it being a security risk.

I have followed the procedure you gave me and here are the subsequent logs.

The bogus wallpaper is gone, the popups have stopped, and I can get into Task Manager again. The only weirdness I perceive is that my browser doesn't seem to be loading pictures like the ones on this site.

Combofix rebooted (Is this what you mean by log from CFScript?):

I never thought about the old junk on it being a security risk.
Neither did many of us until the hackers started exploiting it.

The only weirdness I perceive is that my browser doesn't seem to be loading pictures like the ones on this site.
We have one bad file to remove at least, but I will still post this information for you.
It's not always malware: How to fix the top 10 Internet Explorer issues
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/IEtopten.mspx

Combofix rebooted (Is this what you mean by log from CFScript?):
Yes

c:\windows\eqoruyaxu.dll <<< that was the file, but MBAM killed it for us:
C:\WINDOWS\eqoruyaxu.dll (Trojan.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

As far as malware goes, the HJT log looks good, keep an eye open for any issues like the one you mentioned as we try to wrap up.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, update it and run it once a month or so)

Update Trend Micro\AntiVirus 2007 and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.

If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close the topic.

Awesome! You have slain the dragon! Or at least my scans came back clean.

I'm still having problems with pictures though. I have emptied my cache as that article suggested.

Thanks so much for helping me, on a saturday no less! It's such a relief to finally relax.

Hi again, sorry if this is not a malware thing...nothing showed up in a scan, but I'm having trouble with Automatic Update. I wanted to get going on all that updating I need to do, but you need Automatic Update to be on, right?

I was directed to type services.msc in Run. Under Automatic Updates, it told me that access was denied when I clicked on automatic. (It is currently on disabled, and I think that it was probably on manual before my malware problems because the little shield in the corner used to be yellow.) Nothing in Microsoft's support links appeared to address this access problem. I thought it might be a malware symptom?

Couple of things I suggest...

1) Internet Explorer 8 (still in Beta) is not far from release and you are still using IE6 which is much less secure that IE7, I suggest you start by updating to IE7:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/a426bb85-708c-4b75-87e2-874f9be3b4aa1033.mspx

2) Windows Update: Using Windows Update for Windows XPhttp://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/windowsupdate/learn/windowsxp.mspx

3) Have a look here:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

4) If none of that works, ask for help here:
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (All Languages)
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&prid=11273&gprid=522131
I used email suppost and it took two days to get the information I needed when SP3 would not install.
(won't hurt if they think SP3 caused the issue)

Thanks

Okay I've spent some time on the troubleshooting pages, and I've attempted to send an email, but I'm not sure it went through since it got stuck on a loading page. (I'll try again on a different computer.)

One thing I noticed though. BITS is stopped and won't start. I get a message that says "Could not start the BITS service on Local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified." Bummer. But I noticed in that Services window that the path to executable says: %fystemRoot%\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

I thought that looked weird and thought it might be a sign that something got messed up in the removal of the malware.

The Automatic Updates window under Services is similar: %fystemroot%\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

If this is just a windows problem I've got to get the windows people to help me with that's cool, I just wanted to check if you thought it was something that happened during our cleaning procedures so that I have all the info I need.

Thanks!

I am not sure you have posted the error message word for word, but if you google the exact error message you should get information you need.
For instance: "Could not start the BITS service on Local Computer"
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Could+not+start+the+BITS+service+on+Local+Computer&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=

An option would be a repair install of the Operating System:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=repair+install+of+windows+XP&btnG=Search

Or a reinstallation of the Operating System:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=reinstallation+of+windows+XP&btnG=Search

Likely the malware change stuff, perhaps Microsoft Support can help with that issue also.

Thanks

My system is finally running perfectly! I cannot thank you enough.

I was even able to fix the IE problem with pictures. (Just click on the box that says show pictures, can you believe it?)

I had some trouble editing my registry, but after I figured out how to fix the permissions, everything was golden.

It means a lot that you spent so much time with me and were so nice when I made mistakes or had a question. And all of your advice about the upkeep of my computer was really valuable.

I need to wait until I get paid, but I will certainly be making a donation. This whole experience has been incredible, particularly for being in time of general stress and lack of optimism.

So...thanks!
