View Full Version : Help with virtumonde and others
I am working on a friends PC that got originally was infected with AntiVirus 2009 and then evolved into Anti-Virus XP.
I ran Malwarebytes anti-virus, Spybot search and destroy and tried to install spyware doctor (it never finished the install possibly because on not being able to reach the internet).
I thought I had got it cleaned up (no more popups) but I suspect I just broke the internet connection so it can't download itself. Here is the hijack this log (I have 2 pcs available so I can shuttle files back and forth).

1) E:\HiJackThis.exe <<< not located safe, follow these instructions to fix that.
Download Trend Micro Hijack This™ to your Desktop
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
2) Do NOT run 'FIXES' before helpers have analyzed the HJT log

Post the log from MBAM if you have it.
3) You are still infected, once you safely locate HJT, post a new HJT log, the log from MBAM (if available) and describe any recent symptoms.

Here is the HiJack this log, this time from C:\. You asked about "other symptoms as well so here goes:
1. Windows will not fully come up in non safe mode unless you go into task manager and stop one of the svchost processes. Without doing this, desktop is black and there is no start menu, only a mouse error.
2. No internet access, I suspect this is why malware has not returned. Last time I cleaned this PC up it was fine until the next time it connected to the internet, I am assuming that the malware downloaded and installed itself.
3. Machine reboots itself citing that an RPC service has shutdown, this happens about 5 - 10 minutes after boot.

Sorry, I think McAfee was still active on first one,, here is another where I am sure it was disabled.
Here is the HiJack this log, this time from C:\. You asked about "other symptoms as well so here goes:
1. Windows will not fully come up in non safe mode unless you go into task manager and stop one of the svchost processes. Without doing this, desktop is black and there is no start menu, only a mouse error.
2. No internet access, I suspect this is why malware has not returned. Last time I cleaned this PC up it was fine until the next time it connected to the internet, I am assuming that the malware downloaded and installed itself.
3. Machine reboots itself citing that an RPC service has shutdown, this happens about 5 - 10 minutes after boot.

This usually is the result of incorrectly removing malware? It would be better if you can get the computer online, otherwise you will have to being the tools from another computer to the infected one via removable media. Try this tool to see if it will restore internet connectivity.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)
3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

5) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the log from CFScript, the logs from MBAM and a new HJT log.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

I think you have got it taken care of,, thank you so much. I did get the machine back online with the lsp fix you suggested. As you suggested, I also went through and updated java and removed old versions of java, upgraded adobe reader, upgraded anti virus and MBAM, I also let it install windows updates on the last reboot.

Sounds good, let's see if we can wrap up like this...
I am not seeing a firewall running, if you use the Windows firewall, see this:

Remove combofix from the computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean the System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
(you can make this scan optional since the last one was clean)
Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, update it and run it once a month or so)
Update McAfee and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.

Machine is back to normal, I did all of your suggestions, including install a firewall (windows for now, if my friend wants a new one I will install for them).
I wasn't sure when windows creates restore points so after I completed your actions of deleting all the old restore points, I manually created one as well.
Thank you so much for your help, I have cleaned up a lot of PC's but these new malware's really had me stumped, I'm glad when SPYBot found these newer hard to get rid of malware, they sent me to the forums, another day and I would have just reloaded the OS.
