View Full Version : Laptop suddenly very slow

MTnestRobin
2009-02-23, 18:33
Hello Folks,

Of a sudden, my laptop began running very slow. It now takes about five minutes to boot up (way longer than normal). Anytime I click to open or select anything I have to wait quite a while before I can click again, otherwise I cause it to freeze up or stop responding. I also notice it says (at the bottom) "Done, but with errors on page." That's new.

I'm embarrassed to admit this but, I clicked on a link in a search results window (looking for google earth). I'm afraid I may have gone to a site masquerading as google earth. It wasn't until I was reading (how to download GE) that I realized how poor the English seemed and became suspect that I was not where I thought I was. I did not download anything but I think I was too late in leaving to save myself (well the laptop, I mean). It was within hours of this that the problems began. I am a conservative user (also interpretable as naive), and am generally wary of going anywhere unsafe. Would you please assist me in getting my laptop cleaned up?

Respectfully,
Robin

Hi,

Can't see anything bad there but let's take a deeper look into system.

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Hi Blade81,

Thanks for coming to my rescue!

I downloaded DDS and tried to run it, but it said (as did you) to disable any script blockers. I don't know what a script blocker is or where to disable it. I turned off my "pop up blocker" but that didn't let me run DDS either (I've since turned the pop up blocker back on).

Please advise what to do next.

Robin

Hi Robin

Please disable/close AVG and then try running DDS again.

Blade81,

I turned off the AVG resident shield and went to the windows security center and made sure everything was off there as well. I regret to say that I still cannot get that program to run.

When I double click (the desktop icon) and select run, a black window opens asking me to disable script etc. It also says that its a diagnostic tool and to paste results in the forum. There is nothing to select to make it run beyond just getting that window to open. I'm assuming if I have the right things disabled it will run automatically, right?

Sorry you got such a dodo to work with! Please don't get discourage, I can do this!

Robin

Here they are...:slap:I forgot to wait three minutes to let the test run before closing the window.

Hi again,

Ad-Aware SE is not supported anymore so I recommend you uninstall it. You may get the latest Ad-Aware AE later if you want :)

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one here (http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/) or get Foxit Reader here (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader_2/down_reader.htm). Make sure you don't install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader!

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:

Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u12-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version. Uncheck MSN toolbar if it's offered there.

Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/us/languages/english/check.html?n=1225554235248)

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Read the requirements and privacy statement then click on the Accept button.

The program will launch and start to download the latest definition files.

You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run

Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives

Click on My Computer under Scan.

Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.

Click on Save Report As....

Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

Save this report to a convenient place.

Copy and paste that information & a fresh hjt log into your topic. How's the system running?

The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. As it scans your machine very deeply it could take hours to complete, Kaspersky suggests running it during a time of low activity.

Hi Blade81,

I just want you to know that I'm still working on this. It is painly slow going. I'm getting a few "not responding" messages while I'm doing it and have to close and start again.

I will finish up the scan tomorrow night (sorry I have to go away for the day) and post back with the results.

After the download of definitions I did not get an install application opening. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run]

[Under update it says [program is starting, please wait]... I have for a short while and I'm suspecting it is hung up. I will recheck in the morning if it did anything.

Robin

PS. FYI, timewise, I am on the east coast of the USA, so I may be sleeping while you are working and vice versa. Just want you to know I appreciate the time you take to help out people like me!

Blade81,
Here are the scan results followed by a HJT log report. I'm a little worried that the scan doesn't show anything. The laptop is still running the same way.

Hi

Slowness doesn't always mean that malware is present :) Please see here (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html) for some speed improving hints.

Blade81,

Does this mean there isn't anything left to do?

I will check into some of the suggestions in the link you provided.

I hope you don't mind me asking a couple questions first (and feel free to tell it isn't your problem)....

I noticed in one of the scans system restore is not keeping restore check points anymore (the last being Jan 3rd). I thought that was odd, as I was going to restore my computer when I first noticed trouble (and before coming here).

I have also had issues in the add/remove programs. There are still programs listed that I removed long ago, like AOL. And speaking of a/r, do I use this to uninstall all the diagnostic tools I download or can I just dump them in the recycle bin?

One final question! What in startup absolutely MUST be in there? I hate all that clutter and I don't like to have anything start as I prefer to access through >Programs. The only things I like are the time/date, power meter, volume, AVG, and the wireless detector. How do I get rid of everything else and keep it out? A few years back, someone here gave me a link (broken now) where I could go to find out what these files in startup are. Does such a site still exist?

My apologies for so many questions! I just don't know where to go from here and I hate to cut my lifeline!

Robin

Hi

Please see if you're able to do following system restore reset:

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Programs should always be uninstalled thru add/remove programs when they have an entry there.

These can be disabled from startup:
SigmatelSysTrayApp
QuickTime Task
DVDLauncher
Adobe Photo Downloader
SunJavaUpdateSched<-- if you fix this you have to regularly check for Java updates yourself
Skype
MsnMsgr
Microsoft Office

You can check your 04 entries here (http://www.systemlookup.com/lists.php?list=2) by giving name between the brackets ([]) in the field.

Blade81,

It says I am going to lose all my previous restore points if I turn it off. Doing a system restore was going to be my last ditch remedy (if left on my own:red:). Should I try doing a system restore first. Is there a chance it might help? I trust you enough, that if you say not to bother, I won't, and I'll proceed with the reset.

What'd you think.

Hi

If the latest system restore point available is, as you said, from the beginning of January then restoring to that moment would be not recommended. You should reset the system restore to create fresh restore point and to see if system restore works properly :)

Hello Blade81,

I reset system restore and it made a restore check point for today's date. Looks like its working again. I will check it again tomorrow.

You said, [These can be disabled from startup:] Is it alright to use HJT and remove them from startup rather than just disable them?

I went to the SystemLookup link and found it very helpful. Interestingly while I was there looking up everything in my startup I noticed that 5 items listed all have to do with asian characters and language. Strangely, I have recently noted I have strange fonts listed (lots) in some programs. I'm bewildered how they were added, because as I said, I am a very conservative and cautious user. Since I do not have updates run automatically (and haven't for months) how would they have been entered here? I only start noticing them last month, a week or two before the major slow down. Those items have not been in my startup for very long because I do check it now and then and would have picked up on them.

Well Blade81, even though the computer is still the same, I am glad to know I have no malware it there. Hopefully, after I remove a few unused programs and some data files, I'll defrag and maybe it will help. Do you know of any place like this forum (safe) that would assist with something like what I have going on? I am really not competent to do anything on my own beyond the very basics of uninstalling and deleting.

I have great respect and admiration for your selfless dedication to this! I will still be making a donation because I believe in what you all do here! Thanks.

Robin

Hi Robin

Yes, can be done that way :)

Just a guess but I think some program (probably Microsoft Office) has installed those.

Yes, I think http://forums.pcpitstop.com would be suitable place.

Blade81,

Just thought I'd let you know the outcome of my laptop issue.

After cleaning up my computer of unnecessary junk (kinda like cleaning my closet  ) I went from barely a quarter of my drive free to two thirds available now! I then ran defrag and subsequently a check disk. I was scared to death by all the "deleting indexes" and "repaired bad cluster" (whatever they are) notes during the run and was preparing myself for the worst. But...

I do see a major improvement! While it still takes a while to boot, it is less than it was. The biggest improvement seems to be while browsing. Its not hanging and "not responding" so much!

What I've learned from this experience is to do a bit of periodic maintenence on my computer!

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I did what I did after following the links you provided!

Donaton made. You can close my thread. :bigthumb:
