Hi,

I recently have been having some issues with my computer and Virtumonde.dll, Smitfraud, TinyBar, and Virtumonde are the infections sited.

Prior to downloading Spybot I used the EZ Antivirus program to try to eliminate the problems it found. I foolishly tried to fix some of these issues myself using system restore, clearing my temporary internet flies, and clearing my java cache. I also ran the fixes noted after the first scan check in Spybot prior to realizing that I wasn't supposed to. I apologize for any inconvenience this causes.

Thank you in advance for your help,

Hi Mdolph15

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

http://img.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/hijackthis/uninstall-man.jpg

5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

When I open HijackThis and go through the process and click save, it isn't populating a notepad, and isn't prompting me to save the contents anywhere. Sometimes the program closes.

Is there another way of getting the program to populate the list, or should I possibly un/re install the program.

Thank you for your help.

We will then use this:

Download random''s system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Hi Shaba,

I just wanted to be sure that I have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

I have an AVG Anti Virus program that seems to run immediately when I start the computer. It runs continually. I was looking through the program a bit and I can't find a way to disable it, the closest thing I could find is to snooze (for an allotted period of time). Is that sufficient? Also, I should know this, but is there any way of knowing if there are any other programs that I should have disabled prior to running ComboFix.

Thank you,

Shaba

I don't see AVG in log but I do see eTrust EZ Antivirus.

If you need help disabling that one, let me know.

As a precaution, can I turn my Anti-Virus back on? Should I also remain disconnected from the internet besides for trouble-shooting?

Shaba

You can turn it back on after next step :)

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\tpqfqxgb.sys

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=-

Driver::
pspeolxa

Save this as "CFScript"

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select ''Run as administrator'' to perform this scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need a tutorial, see here (http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/Bleeping/KAS/KAS9.gif)

Delete this:

C:\Documents and Settings\ron\Desktop\Kristins Comp\hhousefree.exe

Empty this folder:

C:\Qoobox\Quarantine

Empty Recycle Bin.

Still problems?

I believe so....

The Spybot S&D scan came back clean. I then ran an eTrust EZ Antivirus scan, and it came back with just one result of an infected/cleaned item. I believe it just deleted Combofix. Anything else I can do to be sure?

Thank you again for all your help,

Shaba

Great :)

See below for my final instructions:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Looking over your log, it seems you don''t have any evidence of a third party firewall.

As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Hi Shaba,

Thank you for all of your assistance, you were a great help.

Just a couple things that I wanted to run by you to get your opinion.

1.) I have run a couple Anti-Virus scans, one through my EZ Antivirus program, and the other through Comodo, when they ask you if you want to run a scan before they finalize the installation. Both times something showed up under the location C:\Windows\NIRCMD.exe

2.) When I ran Combofix /u, my computer wasn't able to locate the program.

*****I am thinking that when I turned my Antivirus back on after I was done running Combofix, it recognized Combofix as an infection and deleted it and therefor wasn't able to locate it when I tried to install it.

3.) I completed all of your other instructions, but the links to Install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Install SpywareBlaster didn't work. Are these things that I should have on my computer? If so do you have a new link?

4.) The only other thing I was wondering is when I began using Comodo it asked for permission to allow a couple programs access, all of which I allowed. The problem is that I don't really know the difference between something day-to-day and something malicious by the pathways it describes. Are there any that I shouldn't allow. Also, do you have a recommendation on what setting my Firewall Security Level should be on? I am assuming Safe Mode.

I apologize for the lengthy message, but any guidance you can provide is greatly appreciated.

I ran a Spybot S&D early this morning and it reported that everything was clean. I ran a scan again this afternoon after completing all of the steps in the tutorial and it reported 3 new problems:

CasaleMedia (Cookie), DoubleClick (Cookie), and Statcounter (Cookie)...Not sure if there is anything to worry about with these or not?

1) That is part of combofix and safe.

2) If you are unable to uninstall combofix, please redownload it and try again combofix /u

3) Link for spywareblaster works for me but not those for malwarebytes. Is that what you mean?

4) You can google about those programs it asks for access. Safe mode is fine setting, yes.

For those cookies, see here (http://www.spybot.info/en/faq/37.html)

I re installed combofix and got it to uninstall running the prompt by turning off my antivirus and firewall. I think everything should be squared away with that.

Thank you again for all your help, I really appreciate it.
