View Full Version : Nasty Adware Pop-ups

My Windows XP PC had a few nasty cases of Adware - Basically, it had a few false anti-adware pop-ups and it kept changing my IE homepage to About:blank.

Following your instructions I have done the smitfraudfix search, rebooted to safe mode, cleaned out temp internet files, run Ewido (which found nothing), run Spybot (which found a Windows active desktop thingy), run smitfraudfix clean (which found some more stuff), rebooted into normal mode and I ran HijackThis. At first glance my problems seemed to be solved. Am I in the clear? Can I proceed with SP2 installation? The logs are shown below:

Hello and welcome to the forum. Let me say you need to start with something in that you have no Service Pack and no critical updates. You
may want to review this inforamtion:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=425 and this:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sysreqs.mspx

The only thing I see in your logs that concerns me is this: F:\hijack this\HijackThis_new.exe HJT.exe needs to run from the hard drive, if this is other than the hard drive, I suggest you move it to here:
C:\hijack this\HijackThis_new.exe before you use it.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
