Hi everyone,

I got a problem with one of the computers in my company. It started acting weird a few days ago.

By weird I mean:

- random access to the Internet: the computer is connected to a local network that works fine for the other computers, however this computer suffers from regular connection problems. It seems to be working just fine when suddenly the connection stops for a few minutes, then works again. That's how the problem started.

- web browsers crashing: FF and IE are both installed on this computer, FF is the one used in general. They both crash randomly, usually after a few minutes. They also seem to have problem with links redirection - e.g. if I google something and then try to follow a link from the results, a new tab shows up and then doesn't display anything: it either keeps loading forever, or just displays an empty page, with something like "windows:onclick..." in the navigation bar.

- windows xp crashing after a reboot: this problem happened today. We tried to reboot the computer, to see if that could fix anything, but then the computer freezes right after windows has loaded. The screen remains black, and there is the cursor at the center of it, but it doesn't move. After a few reboots it appeared that this problem is also random, sometimes it just doesn't want to start. I have no problem starting with the safe mode (except those internet problems).

I am not the one using the computer so I can't really say if something has been installed right before those problems appeared...

I checked a few forums before, and I think this is due to a malware or something like that. However I ain't no specialist this is why I'd appreciate your help. I will add the hijackthis log at the end of the post, it might help.

Thanks a lot to anyone who could help me!

Pierre

Thanks Katana, I hadn't seen that.
Contacting the IT department is the first thing I would have done, unfortunately this is a really small company, I'm an intern, and they don't have any IT guy, so I'm supposed to deal with this problem.
I don't know if that changes anything to you, please let me know, if you can't help us we will have to call a specialist.

Thanks for your help anyway!

I'm an intern, and they don't have any IT guy, so I'm supposed to deal with this problem.

I'm sorry to hear that, but unfortunately this part of your first post

the computer is connected to a local network
means that I have to recommend you call someone in.

It's not that we don't want to help, but there are too many issues that could arise from a networked company machine that we are not experienced in dealing with.

For a start, the majority of the tools we use are only free for Home Users.
The rest are only tested on Home machines, and may well change settings that are required for a Company network.

Add in the fact that the only way we can diagnose a problem is by dumping a lot of info into log form, and you get the probability that private information may be posted on the web.

I'm sorry

Ok I totally understand, thanks for the advice! You're right, we will call someone.

Keep on doing such a great job!
