Hello and welcome to the Forums :)
Okay let's see...

Please post the location of the infection. (from spybot log)

Then...

We will begin with ComboFix.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/whatnext.png

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

Something strange. Here is what happned.
On the 25th, I downloaded Spybot updates and ran Spybot. I got the message about bifrose.la and had Spybot fix it. The fix log showed

Bifrose.LA: [SBI $02D438BF] Settings (Registry key, fixed)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{9B71D88C-C598-4935-C5D1-43AA4DB90836}

I rebooted, reran Spybot, it found the trojan, and I recleaned it. I did this 4 times, fixed the same error in the same place. I shut down my PC.

Yesterday (26th) in the evening, after powering on,I ran Spybot again - NO errors (no bifrose.la message). Today, (27th), I ran it again - still NO error.
I checked my registry - the key above is not in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, but I did find it in HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_USERS_S-1-5..(long key name).

Not sure what this means. Am I infected? Should I still run ComboFix? I will wait for a reply, but here is a current HJT log

Hi :)

Okay that is definately a bitfrose backdoor infection.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451)

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063)

We can attempt to clean this machine but i can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post

(if you want me to try the cleaning, just run ComboFix and post the log to here)

Hi again, we'll continue :)

At first, please install the Windows Recovery Console (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix#manual_recovery)

You should print these instructions or save these to a text file. Follow these instructions carefully.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Dir::
c:\windows\SxsCaPendDel
C:\9f0ee9f6930baea5925aedb776208a46

Driver::
BRXGHF
ILWGLHU

Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*) in the same location as ComboFix.exe

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

OK - here are the logs from MBAM, HijackThis and ComboFix. When I used the manual method to install Win Recovery Console by dragging the Microsoft Boot Disk exe file over to ComboFix, it said there was an update to ComboFix, so I let it get the update, and it then ran ComboFix, installed the Recovery Console and reran ComboFix. I will attach both ComboFix logs.

Okay looks better.

Make your hidden files visible:
Go to My Computer
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
Click the View tab.
Checkmark the "Display the contents of system folders"
Under the Hidden files and folders select "Show hidden files and folders"
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files"
Click Apply and then the OK and close My Computer.

Go to the My Computer and delete the following folders (if present):
C:\WINDOWS\inf2

Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner

Right click on your favourite web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc) and select Run As Administrator to run it.

Go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Mail databases Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

Post the Kaspersky log to here along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Also let me know how the computer is running.

2 logs below. 2 notes
-browser 'Run As Administrator' -did not get this option. I think it's for Vista, I am running XP
-Kaspersky stopped and asked to make Outlook my default mail reader. I have it, but never use it. I use Eudora. When I just clicked ok, the scan carried on.

You asked how my computer is running - mostly it seems ok, no noticeable changes, except recently, it seems to freeze sometimes - in Internet Explorer mostly, but sometimes in other apps. If Task Manager says 'not responding', I kill the app and carry on.

Okay, looks quite good now.

Have you uninstalled Norton Internet Security or are you using it? You seem to have some leftovers running there.

Hello Mr_JAk3
Thank you very much for your help. I appreciate your sharing your expertise and the time you have taken to assist me. I wish I knew how I got that trojan, I am usually very careful about what I download and/or run.

However, your first email to me talked about the issues with trojan backdoor functionality and the possibility the machine may be compromised and that the disk should be reformatted and the OS reinstalled. I decided to get a new PC and give my old one to my wife, after it has been reformatted and everything reinstalled (not by me, I am not that expert, I deal with an independent store that I have bought my PC's from for the last 20 years or so).
I am using the new PC to post this message. I will be reinstalling Spybot tonight.
In answer to your question, when I sent my last reply, yes I was still running Norton Internet Security. On this new PC, the vendor has loaded AVG free, which is running right now. I intend to remove it and reinstall Norton, but I wonder if you have any suggestions. I bought Norton because PC Magazine said it was the best for virus and spyware protection.... but it did not catch this bifrose trojan, Spybot did.

Hi :)

You're very welcome.

Okay, reformatting is a good choice. A fresh start.

In answer to your question, when I sent my last reply, yes I was still running Norton Internet Security. On this new PC, the vendor has loaded AVG free, which is running right now. I bought Norton because PC Magazine said it was the best for virus and spyware protection.... but it did not catch this bifrose trojan, Spybot did.Norton Internet Security didn't seem to be correctly running in the latest log. (the backdoor possibly did something). I would say that if you've paid for Norton and still have a valid licence - you use it. It is a good antivirus. Just remember to keep it updated and run a full system scan on a weekly basis.

I don't know how you got infected but here are some hints for the future:

These are good (free) firewalls: Sunbelt-Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm)
