View Full Version : Multiple IEXPLORE.EXE Processes

I have noticed that there are multiple IEXPLORE.EXE processes running, usually under my daughter's account. When we go to shutdown the machine, it won't because of these processes that are hung. Usually it's between 5-10. My wife and I use FireFox and (usually) don't have this problem.

I try to run Spybot and Adaware at least once a month and usually don't find anything other than the doubleclicks and that sort of thing. I also have AVG running and is on automatic update. Here's my HJT log, which looks pretty clean to me. If this is not malware or virus, how do I go about fixing this?

One thing to note is that I used the HJT feature to upload to TrendMicro, but all that did was spawn an IEXPLORE.EXE process each time and never actually loaded IE.

Hello and Welcome to Safer Networking,

My name is peku006 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.
I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

Please observe these rules while we work:

Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

1 - Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) and save it to your desktop.

Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/database/mbam-rules.exe) and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:

Make sure the "Perform full scan" option is selected.
Then click on the Scan button.
If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button
The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:

Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
The log can also be found here:

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

2 - download and run RSIT

Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt<- (will be maximized) and info.txt<- (will be minimized)

3 - Status Check

Is there a program that will look at the running IEexplore processes and tell you what they are trying to connect to? I thought I had read about that, but can't seem to find where I read it, nor can I find an app that does that.

You can try this: CurrPorts: http://nirsoft.net/utils/cports.html
Just run it and make note of which IP addresses that IE is trying to get to (the Remote Address column)
Then use an online Reverse DNS Lookup (one is here: http://remote.12dt.com/ (http://remote.12dt.com/) ) to figure out who owns the IP address.


1 - Clean temp files

Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

if you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

if you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.


Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program


2 - Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Mail databases Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply.

3 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

4 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the Kaspersky online scanner report
2. a fresh HijackThis log
How's the computer running now? Any problems?
