View Full Version : Vundo / Vitrimundo Infection

Hello,
My antivirus software (AVG Free) detected the Vundo virus yesterday. I ran a full scan and "healed" the infections. I then ran Spybot SD which found instances of Vitrimundo then "fix selected problems." I then ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program which also found instances of the Vitrimundo infection which I "fixed". I also ran VundoFix which found no problems
I have now restarted and run AVG, Spybot and Malwarebytes and they all come up with clean scans.
When using Mozilla Firefox and using google search the links take me to ad sites. I think I still have some parts of Vundo on my machine.
I have run Erunt and backed up my registry. Below is the hijakthis log.
Thank you for your help.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
Pinned (sticky) to the top of this forum, and posted above are the directions, make sure you have read and followed them, then post the requested logs, please mention any recent symptoms.
Some important information for you.
Do NOT run 'FIXES' before helpers have analyzed the HJT log

You still have Symantec running, any reason for that?

If you still have the results of the last MBAM scan, please post it, I would like to see what it removed.
1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.
2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use
Download ComboFix from here:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.
*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
Tutorial if needed

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Thank you for your response and for your help!
I have read the information about not running fixes; unfortunately I read this info and joined the forum after I had run AVG, Spybot, Vundofix and MBAM.
Some recent symptoms include: redirects to ad sites as well as inability to log in to Gmail; also computer seems to be lagging and running unkown processes, fan kicks on even when no programs are open.
I did not know that Symantec was running or that it was even still on my computer. I uninstalled it a long time ago after the subscription ran out. How do I remove it? It does not show up in the add/remove program list. Can i just delete the folder and its contents C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared?
Posted are two logs below from MBAM, the first shows the problems, the second scan I ran after I "fixed" the infections and restarted.
The Combofix log as well as the new Hijackthis log and unistall list are posted below the MBAM logs .
Thanks,

When was the last time you used canned air to blow the dust out of your fans? May not be a problem, the fans will come on to cool the motherboard, etc. Cleaning the Interior of your PC

Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:

Follow the directions carefully and in the posted order.
1) Open MBAM and click the Quarantine Tab, DELETE everything in there. Click the Update tab then Check for Updates, download and install any available updates then close MBAM.
2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
3) C:\VundoFix Backups <<< delete that folder and contents
4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O2 - BHO: Browser Address Error Redirector - {CA6319C0-31B7-401E-A518-A07C3DB8F777} - C:\Program Files\BAE\BAE.dll
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {A057A204-BACC-4D26-9990-79A187E2698E} - (no file)
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html
No need to download again, but do run the updated version as instructed.
6) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file (unless it is clean) & a new HJT log in your next reply.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

How is the computer running now, any malware issues?

Thank you for all the information and help. Unfortunately I am still getting redirected to ad sites when I use google to search for anything. The links that come up as search results bounce me to random ads. I also noticed the address that starts to load when I click on a link starts with "click fraud manager..."
I removed Azureus and updated the programs that you suggested. I then followed your instructions in the order stated. After running MBAM at the end the results came up clean. The new Hijackthis log is posted below:

This can be a tough issues to troubleshoot, first some information:

Looks like you use a router, have a look at this information:

Phil,
I have tried various other search engines and Google seems to be the only one that search results redirect to ad sites. For instance I will type in "wired" the top result will be wired magazine. I will click on the link but instead it loads some random add page.
We have tried to reset our wireless router and now seem to be unable to get it working again. I am now connected directly to our cable modem. The results are the same when I try using Google search engine.
I am worried that other things are going on as well that I am not aware of. Should I be worried about entering passwords and other information online now that our computer is compromised?
I am not sure what to do from here.
Will reinstalling the operating system take care of the problem? If there is some less drastic method of fixing this issue please let me know.
Thank you,
Collin

Hi Collin, let me give you an idea of this issues:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Google+redirects&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=
Did you look at the information in the links concerning Click Fraud at the top of my post #6? Seems Google wants to have all of the search (advertising) business but does not want to accept responsibility for issues like this when it comes to their software?
We have tried to reset our wireless router and now seem to be unable to get it working again.
I suggest you contect tech support at the router's manufacturer. They will be able to get you running.
Should I be worried about entering passwords and other information online now that our computer is compromised?
I personally am always concerned about this, here is some information:

Will reinstalling the operating system take care of the problem?
No...it is unlikely the protected Windows files are infected. The only way to be 100% sure is a reformat:
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/reformat/
http://www.cyberwalker.net/faqs/how-tos/reinstall-faq.html
http://helpdesk.its.uiowa.edu/windows/instructions/reformat.htm
If you wish to continue trying to resolve this issue, let's look first for a rootkit with BlackLight.
Let's check for a rootkit:
ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe <<< download to your Desktop
Double click the fsbl.exe and accept the agreement
Click NEXT...then Scan
BlackLight will Scan for hidden items
If anything is found save the report and post it. Items found may be valid so do not remove anything.
and have Kaspersky Online Scan (KOS) take a look:
Do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/languages/english/check.html?n=1213442456390
1. Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
2. Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
3. The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
4. After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
5. This will start the program and scan your system.
6. The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
7. Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
8. Now, click on the Save Report as button.
9. Save the file to your desktop.
10. Copy and paste that information in your next post
Thanks

I downloaded Blacklight, ran it and it came up with nothing.
I ran the scan with Kaspersky, also no results, see below.

Thanks...the scans are coming up clean and this one has me a bit puzzled. Post a new HJT log and see if you can provide any additional information. I am interested in any thoughts you have since you are in front of the computer. We will scan with one additional tool to look for hidden junk BlackLight might not have seen.
Please Download GMER to your desktop
Download GMER and extract it to your desktop.
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip
Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.
**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOTKIT" entries unless advised by a trained Security Analyst
If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
Click Yes.
Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
Click OK.
GMER will produce a log. Click on the Save button, and save the log as gmer.txt somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
If you do not receive notice about possible rootkit activity remain on the Rootkit/Malware tab & make sure the 'Show All' button is unticked.
Click the Scan button and let the program do its work. GMER will produce a log.
Click on the Save button, and save the log as gmer.txt somewhere you can easily find it, such as your Desktop.
Post that log, a new HJT log and any information you think will help.
Thanks

The only symptoms that I am experiencing now are the google search result redirects.
We reset the factory default settings on our router and got it back up and running.
This whole thing started when I clicked on a supposed link in a chat window on a side bar on the site JustinTV to watch a live stream on a Portland Trailblazers basketball game. AVG popped up with a virus and I started trying to combat it by running Spybot etc.
I am not sure if this matters or not but one thing I did in the advanced settings tools in spybot was disable some of the system startup items. I believe one came up on a virus scan: prunnet. This still shows up on the system startup list but I disabled it.
See system startup list from Spybot, HJT log and Gmer logs below:

Make sure you can view all files and folders:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#winxp
Let's remove these, you can still set any start page you wish.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/community/columns/ie7_basics.mspx
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,Default_Page_URL = http://www.google.com/ig/dell?hl=en&...us&ibd=1060908
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = wmplayer.exe //ICWLaunch
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ruludoji.dll <<< delete the file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\prunnet.exe <<< delete the file
Empty the Recycle Bin on the Desktop and restart the computer.

Hi,
I completed the tasks from the previous post. The two files to delete were not in the windows32 folder (showing all hidden items) so I was unable to delete them. No change in redirects in Firefox after restart.
Internet Explorer does not seem to be having the same issues. In the past I had not ever used IE unless I had to. One of the symptoms of the original infection was the IE would open on its own, until I ran the fixes. Could this now be confined to Firefox?
The hijack in Firefox seems to be clickfraudmanager.com - This is the beginning of the redirect address when I click on a google search result.
After searching for the term clickfraudmanager.com a lot of info comes up on people having the same issue. One thing I noticed when reading up on this was running Kaspersky online with windows IE only? I ran my scan previously with Firefox.
Not sure what the next step is. I don't want to go off trying every "fix" I find online. Your guidance on where to go from here (if any) is appreciated.
Thanks,
Collin

OK, getting me confused no talking about Internet Explorer and Firefox when I am thinking the only issues is Google? Please tell me exactly what the issue is we are trying to correct and when it is happening.
Could this now be confined to Firefox?
Certainly, malware could have added something to Firefox, look here:
Click on Tools -> Add-ons
You have two options - to Disable or to Uninstall
Uninstalling add-ons take effect when you restart Firefox
(look at all four tabs for anything that should not be there)
Not sure what the next step is. I don't want to go off trying every "fix" I find online. Your guidance on where to go from here (if any) is appreciated.
Nor am I, having never had this issue, I know nothing more than you do about it. To troubleshoot the issue, you will be doing just that, trying things others have tried.
FIREFOX POLICIES <<< for instance, look at this area in the combofix log. I have been using combofix a long time and I have never seen all of those addresses like that in a log and have no idea why they are there. You might want to uninstall Mozilla Firefox completely from the computer, restart, then download it again and try it out of the box to see how it runs.

Thanks

I apologize for the confusion. Up until recently I had not been checking IE for malicious activity. After testing search results from google and other search engines in IE I found that it did not have the same redirecting hijack as Firefox.
I checked out the add-ons in Firefox and nothing seemed to be unusual so I took your advice and uninstalled completely, erased all leftover Firefox folders and restarted. I then downloaded a fresh copy of Firefox using IE and reinstalled. This seems to have fixed the problem. Search results no longer redirect through "clickfraudmanager.com..." and there have been no other symptoms.
Thanks again for your help. Let me know if there is anything I need to do to wrap up the help session.

Thanks for that feedback, I appreciate the information. Let's wrap up like this...
Here is some good AVG information if you can use it:
FAQ: http://www.avg.com/faq
AVG Free Forum: http://freeforum.avg.com/
http://russelltexas.com/tutorials/avg8install.htm
Remove combofix from the computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png
Clean the System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, update it and run it once a month or so)
Update AVG8 and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean.
If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close the topic.
