First, thank you (whomever!)

PROBLEM: Spybot will install but won't run. I get the error message, "This application has been changed since it was created. Since SpyBot S&D does not change itself, we recommend you check your system for malware and viruses immediately."

BACKGROUND: I'm seeing "Waiting for about:blank" all the time in IE7 when pages are slowly loading and my understanding is that if I am seeing that then I have an infection of some sort. As such, I've been trying various fixes (CWShredder, SuperAntiSpyware, CCleaner, ComboFix, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, etc), all to no avail. However, occasionally something in my efforts will cause the "Waiting for about:blank" to not appear at all in the taskbar when loading webpages. But then after a while - there it is again.

I have searched this forum, read FAQs, and I can't find much here on my problem with SpyBot (not to mention anything helpful for "about:blank"). I did find two suggestions here in these forums: 1) Run sfc /scannow to check for corrupt system files and 2) Run a diagnostic memory test on system RAM. Both of these have checked out and I still can not run SpyBot.

Furthermore, I have uninstalled/reinstalled several times, downloaded from diferent sites, tried save/install and tried run from download location. System Restore Points before yesterday are gone. :(

Hijackthis log looks clean but what do I know. I'm the one here asking for help.

Curious thing - at the same time Spybot became unoperational, I also lost the ability to start Ad-Aware. That gives me another error message, "Runtime error in install: Error reading ImageList.Bitmap: Invalid floating point operation."

Thanks for anything.

I haven't run across that error in this forum in quite a while, so I had assumed that the particular checking feature had been removed from Spybot.

Are you running the most recent version of Spybot (Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.6.2.46)?

The most frequent cause of that particular error message in the past was due to memory (RAM) problems on systems running Spybot. I suggest that you run a diagnostic memory test on your system.

If your system didn't come with diagnostic routines including a memory test, look here:
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

Memtest86.com - Memory Diagnostic

Hi - thanks for taking the time.

I did see that suggestion (memtest) elsewhere in these forums and I have run the (very long) memtest application. I downloaded it, burned the disc image to a CD-ROM, and booted the computer from the CD and the test revealed no problems with the RAM. In fact, I recently (3 months ago?) replaced a RAM chip that had gone bad.

Just to be sure, I downloaded the current version (1.6.2.46, a 15.6 MB download) again and installed. As soon as I attempt to run SpyBot I get the same error message.

I had SpyBot before and used it occasionally with no problems. I uninstalled it prior to attempting to install the new version and nothing but problems ever since.

Thanks,
D

The only other suggestion that I have is that you post in the Malware Removal (http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22) forum and have someone take a look at your system.

Follow the procedure in the this link and produce a new HijackThis log: "BEFORE you POST"(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance) ( http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288).
After you have read and followed those instructions (excluding running a Spybot scan since it seems you can't), start your own thread in the Malware Removal (http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22) forum, making sure to post the HijackThis log produced from those instructions.
