problems with virtumonde

My computer seems to have become infected with virtumonde. I have attempted to remove it from my system with spybot, and have been unsucessful. I have received several pop ups trying to get me to install an anti-malware program, I presume due to virtumonde's presence.My AVG antivirus does not show a problem with my system. Any help you could give would be appreciated.

Welcome back, it's been awhile. First information and questions.

1) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288 <<< these are "Before you Post" instructions, includes the fact TeaTimer must be disabled before the HJT log is posted.

We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) I need to be sure you know this program is onboard:

3) Disable TeaTimer, tell me about CovenantEyes and then post a new HJT log, and we will get started.

Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Boy am I glad to see you :) I had disabled teatimer, but forgot to do so until after I submitted the log file, sorry about that. Covenant Eyes is the one piece of "spyware" that I want to have on my system. I rebooted my computer just a few minutes ago, and got this message when it was trying to reboot Kernel_Data_Inpage_Error. couldn't get anymore info off of it before it disappeared. This has happened before. I also have noticed quite a long period of time required to reboot my comp lately, Probably 10 minutes at least from the time I power it up until I am able to do anything on it. Another problem I have noticed recently is an inability to upload windows updates. The update manager will try to do so, but is unsucessful. Your help with these issues is greatly appreciated.

This can be done as time permits, but it is important, and may be why you are infected.
Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.

Let's do some cleaning and check for Virtumode and see what we find, once we have a clean computer then we can discuss issues. I have suggestions from looking at running processes.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

4) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Alright, thanks a ton for your help. I looked at the list of program updates, and am working on getting that done. I use an outdated version of firefox because a couple of addons that I use in an online game are not compatible with the newest version. I only use firefox for that game, and to go to sites that I know are safe. Is that still a problem? Here are my logs.

I am not seeing malware and neither is MBAM, let's have
Kaspersky Online Scanner take a look since you already have the program onboard. Make sure you update the database before you run it.

Do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

5. This will start the program and scan your system.
6. The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
7. Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
8. Now, click on the Save Report as button.
9. Save the file to your desktop.
10. Copy and paste that information in your next post

Thanks for your help, it is really appreciated. I meant to ask you, which is the better program in your opinion: ATF Cleaner or CC cleaner? Ive seen techs here request both, is their any real difference between them?
well, 4 hours and some change later that kaspersky scan finished, its clean.
Here is the log for it, and a new hijack this log. The comp appears to be working fine now, the reboot is still kinda slow, but no more attempts at opening new windows with "anti-virus" scanners in them on my web browser. I am still working on updating the programs list you gave me. Any more suggestions?

ATF Cleaner or CC cleaner?
I keep tham both and use ATF-Cleaner often and CCleaner once a month or so for a deep cleaning. I have also learned to trust it (after I make a backup) to clean my registry a couple of times a year.
Neither programs runs, so only disk space is used.

Look closely at the information I posted, especially MSConfig. If you start the program (and don't need it running) it slows started, uses resources when running and slows the shutdown. For instance (I use WinXp) I start four programs:
antivirus
firewall
SpywareGuard
WindowsLiveMessenger

The security programs are a must and I use WLM everytime I boot.
