next download and run MBAM:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) to your desktop:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click **Remove Selected.**
*A restart may be required to finish the clean up process*
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt

please post the MBAM log in reply. After MBAM is finished, rescan post a new hjt log also.

hi

ok good. the 2nd MBAM is the one we really need. it shows what was removed from the computer. The new hjt log looks ok.

Did you install WinPcap yourself?

C:\Program Files\WinPcap

reboot and post a new hjt log please.

Hello again,

I'm not sure about the WinPcap or what I need it for; honestly, I'm not sure about my installing it myself or not.
Here's the most recent hjt log:

hi,

WinPcap is a packet capture library most likely installed with other software. I dont see anything in the log that would need it. you can post a uninstall list using hjt:
start hjt, click on:
open misc tools section
open uninstall manager
save list

post the uninstall list in your reply.

also do this to copy/paste some registry info:

first you can locate the item in the registry. Go to start>run and type in the window: regedit. Click ok

windows registry opens up. on the left is the key/folders. Click the + signs to drill down to what we are looking for

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\ProtocolDefaults]

once in the last \windows folder (protocol defaults) on the left side, you should see what we are looking for on the right side.

heres a screenshot on image shack:
http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/3204/protocol.png

to export, left click on ProtocolDefaults in the left hand pane
then go to file>export
in file name window; you can save it as: prot.txt
it will save as text file on your desktop. copy paste the contents of the text in your reply

hi,

thanks for the info. I dont see any packet capturing software that would need the winpcap library. Its possible for malware to use it also. You can remove via add/remove programs panel. If it turns out something needs it no doubt you will be prompted to reinstall it.

first we will back up the registry as it is now:
start>regedit like before, navigate to:

Click the + signs to drill down to what we are looking for

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\ProtocolDefaults]

click on ProtocolDefaults then:

at the top on the left hand side click File>export
Name it backup.reg
then click save, you can save it to your desktop.

close out registry editor.

Open Notepad and copy the contents of the following code box to a new file.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\ProtocolDefaults]
@=""
"http"=dword:00000003
"https"=dword:00000003
"ftp"=dword:00000003
"file"=dword:00000003
"@ivt"=dword:00000001
"shell"=dword:00000000

Save As: fixit.reg to your desktop
doubleclick the fixit.reg file you just saved. If asked to allow it to merge into the registry, select yes.

Ok, I followed the last bit of instructions; what should I do next if anything or should that just about do it? I haven't had a redirected browser issue in a couple of days (crosses fingers), so maybe it did the trick.

Again, I appreciate you taking the time on this one.

ok good. Your welcome, you can update MBAM and do a full scan and post the log.

I still haven't had any recurring redirected browser problems as of yet, but yesterday the browser crashed on me once. I found some new invaders during the new scan, deleted/quarentined most and rebooted to complete the removal of the rest.

ok thanks for the info. Based on what MBAM found in the last scan we will get another download to use as a check for malware. Its called combofix. there is a guide to read first.Read through the guide, download combofix to your desktop, disable AV as explained in the guide, doubleclick the icon and follow the prompts. Post the combofix log.

Hi, it seems I've spoken too soon. My browser was experiencing the old redirecting bit again whenever I'd click on any link after a Google search. I also noticed, attempting a system restore, that I couldn't confirm the restore date -- I would hit next to start the restore and it wouldn't do anything. I'm a bit frustrated as I thought the system was behaving itself and virus free (for the most part). Oddly enough the last mbam log detected zero infections, so I'm not sure where these things are hiding, but they're damn stubborn for sure. I feel like all I'm doing is scanning and occasionally I'll find something and delete/quarantine it, but still the problem persists. Is there something stronger or more thorough I could use to look for the culprit(s)?
Thanks.

ok we will use combofix to remove some items:

Click Start, then Run and type Notepad and click OK.
Copy/paste the text in the code box below into notepad:

File:
c:\windows\SYSTEM32\jawepuwa.dll
c:\windows\SYSTEM32\6AA4D52F06.sys
c:\windows\SYSTEM32\gldx.exe

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=-

Name the Notepad file CFScript.txt and Save it to your desktop.
now locate the file you just saved and the combofix icon, both on your desktop
using your mouse drag the CFScript right on top of the combofix icon and release, combofix will run and produce a new log
please post the new combofix log.

open IE and go to tools>internet options>advanced tab: click on reset to reset IE settings.

update MBAM and do another scan, may complete faster now.Post the log.
I see you have LimeWire and Azureus. Plenty of malware distributed on p2p networks.

Hmm, the mbam scan found about 10 infections; they seem to be quite relentless. Yeah, I haven't used Azureus or Limewire for quite sometime, so I don't think it's their doing, although I'll probably toss them after all this, thanks.

Here's the Combofix log:

hi,

ok thanks for the info. Do this for me: To help show all files:

FOr XP: on the desktop double click my computer,at the top click on> tools>folder options>view> then select "show hidden files and folders", then UNcheck "hide protected operating system files " also UNcheck "hide extensions for known file types" click apply to all folders, apply then ok

take a look here:
C:\WINDOWS

we are looking for:
TEMPminisvr4.exe

if you locate it you can go to this web address:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php?channel=67

you can use the browse button to locate the file on your computer. then use the send button to upload it.

Hows it looking on your end now?

Well, no sign of TEMPminisvr4.exe file in C:\WINDOWS, just TEMPfdad.dat. Should the TEMPminisvr4.exe have been in there? I haven't had any browser issues lately, but I've seen a somewhat consistent flow of infiltrations with my ESET scans. Thanks.

Well, after having no luck finding TEMPminisvr4.exe file in C:\WINDOWS, it dawned on me to look for it with the "SEARCH" option. I found this in the C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch folder: TEMPMINISVR4.EXE-2A0CC438.pf
It's a mere 16kb, but it somewhat matched, so I thought I'd post it.
Thanks and sorry for not trying this prior to my last post.

ok no problem, thanks for the info. Could just be a left over harmless registry entry.

start HJT, click the "Scan" button. check the items below, close any open windows, then click "Fixed checked"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Java Load] C:\WINDOWS\TEMPminisvr4.exe

reboot and post a new hjt log please.

you can remove combofix like this:
start>run and type in combofix /u
click ok or enter
Note: there is a space after the x and before the /

hows it looking on your end now?

Things seem to be in order here, no browser issues or any noticeable bugs anywhere, so thanks. I ran hjt and fixed the files you'd mentioned. When I attempted to uninstall Combofix using combofix /u it started to run the program instead of unistalling it. I looked into removing it using the add/remove programs, but it wasn't listed, so I'm not sure how to get rid of it. Should I just hold onto it for any future problems that may arise? Only at the recommendation of a qualified person such as yourself I mean.

ok good. your welcome. No i wouldnt keep combofix. Its not a scanner like MBAM is. Its a tool to help in the removal of malware. You can keep and use MBAM, its excellent. Always check for updates before scanning with it.
The paid version offers auto updates and real time protection.

to remove combofix:

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer:

http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTMoveIt3.exe

* Save it to your desktop.
* Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
Click the green CleanUp! button
Click yes to begin, Click yes to reboot

any future problems that may arise?

Heres some tips to help prevent any future problems:

Reducing Your Risk To Malware:
The Short Version:

1) It is essential to Keep your OS (http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us),(Windows) browser (IE, FireFox) and other software up to date to "patch" vulnerabilities that could be exploited. This is also true for web based application like Java, Adobe Flash/Reader, QuickTime etc. Check there status here. (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/)

2) Know what you are installing to your computer. Alot of software can come bundled with unwanted add-ons, like adware, toolbars and malware. Do not install any files from ads, links or popups.

3) Install and keep updated: one antivirus and two or three anti-malware applications. If not updated they will soon be worthless. Scanning frequency is a function of your computer habits.

4) Refrain from clicking on links or attachments you receive via E-Mail, IM, Chat Rooms or Social Sites, no matter how tempting or legitimate the message.

5) Don't click on ads/pop ups or offers from websites requesting that you need to install software to your computer.

6) Don't click on offers to "scan" your computer. Install ActiveX Objects with care. Do you trust the website?

7) Set up and use limited accounts for everyday use, rather than administrator accounts. Limited accounts (http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/advanced/useraccount.mspx) can help prevent *malware from installing.*

8) Install and understand the limitations of a software firewall.

9) Consider using an alternate browser and E-mail client. Internet Explorer and OutLook Express are popular targets for malicious code because they are widely used.
