Unknown Malware - SpyBot won't start...

Greetings!

I'm pretty sure I've got a PC infected with malware. When I try to go to any AV web site, browsers get re-directed. Also, I've uninstalled/reinstalled SpyBot and I can't get it to start up.

Not sure where to turn with this.

I do have a HiJackThis log (below), but I don't know what to do with it. (I only performed a scan, nothing else)

Here is what I've done so far:

*Using McAfee, scanned and cleaned the following:
Generic!Artemis
Generic Fake Alert.k
JS/Tenia.d
*Installed and ran ThreatFire - nothing found.

Any direction would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry to totem post, but I found the thread here which describes how to get SpyBot started if it refused to run. (I tried renaming the launch icon on the desktop, but I had to go directly to the SpyBot directory and run the ***.scr file).

Anyhow, I ran SpyBot and it only found two things:

A tracking cookie (doubleclick) and it also found that the Microsoft Security Center had been disabled, so I chose to fix both items.

As suspected, the problem still exists.

Also, I was able to run MBAM from across the network, which generated this log file:

Hi Michael, I am not 100% sure what you are doing, but it appears you missed the "Before you Post" directions. Let's start here:


1) TeaTimer is NOT disabled, see that those instructions are followed in the next HJT log.

2) HJT is not located safely or where the instructions say to locate it: By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
Please correct that before you post.

3) Do NOT run 'FIXES' before helpers have analyzed the HJT log

4) Post a new HJT log and describe any symptoms of malware.

5) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

On the machine in question, Windows is installed on drive "E", does that matter?

E:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis <<< install it here, that will be fine.
HJT creates backups, the way you installed it has no folder and the chance a backup that may be needed could easily get deleted on the Desktop. The instructions will store everything safely in Program Files, plus create a safe shortcut on the Desktop.

Hi Phil,

Well... regarding TeaTimer - I can't seem to keep it from loading on startup.

When I start SpyBot, the Resident box is already unchecked in the tools menu. I've restarted, but the teatimer icon remains in the system tray.

I am able to exit teatimer by right clicking the icon, but after restart it starts back up.

What next?

Every once in a while we get a situation where Spybot has to be uninstalled to stop TeaTimer, if you have follow these directions:
We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

Don't be concerned with TeaTimer until we know it's a problem.

You have HJT located safely, I am just not seeing malware in the HJT log. The last MBAM log shows this:
No action taken.<<< what I want you to do is follow these directions. If you still have MBAM, there is no need to download, but make sure you update (1851 3/15/2009) and run MBAM as instructed.

* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Ok,

Just so we're on the same page. I've disabled TeaTimer using the system tray "Exit SpyBot S&D Resident" function.

I'm now running MBAM on another computer, scanning it from across the network. (When I try to install MBAM on the infected computer, it halts at the "finishing installation" screen.) I have updated MBAM prior to starting the scan and will post the log in my next post.

You should be able to run MBAM on the infected computer, it is one of the very easiest programs to install and run? If something is blocking it, it is something I can not see so we had better run combofix for starters to see what it is. I will wait to see the results from MBAM, but as I said, it is very unusual when it will not run.

Looks like we cross-posted. The previous log was created from across our network, but after about 30 minutes (!!), MBAM FINALLY got past the "finishing installation" stage.

Status update: I had difficulties getting MBAM updated (I had disabled the LAN adapter and when I attempted to enable it, the computer would re-start on it's own)

I was finally able to get it updated and it is scanning as I type this message. As soon as it's done (or if I hit a snag), I will post the full MBAM log.


I also need to know how the computer is running. Please describe any malware symptoms.

Symptoms:
*SpyBot will not run from the desktop even after renaming, nor will some other anit-virus/anti-malware apps

*cannot go to any anti-virus web site using Internet Explorer or FireFox (typing the web address such as "mcafee.com" takes you to a Google page which then you are redirected to Ad Pages)

*frequently, audio is heard from the speakers which is usually an advertisement followed by some political speech (I think it's Hilary Clinton!) If you do a ctrl-alt-del, you will find IExplorer running (in the "processes" tab, not the "applications" tab) and you can end the process and the audio goes away

*system will periodically restart (reboot) on it's own with no known applications running

*general slowness-sluggish behavior, sometimes to the extreme

*system sometimes does not complete the boot process (it will hang shortly after the Windows "welcome" screen)

It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Hi Phil,

My apologies for taking so long to get back...

The computer doesn't have "much" of the symptoms that I described before.

However, here are a few things that I'm seeing:

1) I am seeing a short glimpse of what looks to be a boot menu, right after the BIOS loads, but before the Windows XP loading screen. It looks similar to the safe mode menu, but I only get about 1/2 second to view it, so I cannot tell. The machine then seems to boot normal with no input from me.

2) I was installing the Comodo firewall, and prior to installation, it ran a scan and found something called "f3initialsetup1.0.0.6.inf" in the "Downloaded Program Files" directory. I had Comodo remove it. (that's the only thing Comodo found.)

and lastly (this is as far as I've got)

3) Immediately after installing Comodo firewall and rebooting, it blocked an attempt for the "system" (system.exe ??) to allow a connection from IP 192.168.254.2 . This was right after boot up with nothing running. I checked the IP and it seems to be from California : http://ws.arin.net/whois/?queryinput=192.168.254.2

My tasks now are to remove and/or update the outdated software that you suggested.

Should I be running additional scans using MBAM, Spybot, etc, etc?

3) I would say that is what a firewall is supposed to do? The security programs I run block attempts to access my computer.

Let's see if we can wrap up and see what happens.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, update it and run it once a month or so)

Update mcafee and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.

If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close the topic.

OK, all seems OK with the exception of some slowness now and then. I'm pretty sure there are some corrupted files as a result of the infection, but nothing critical.

However, I've run McAfee several times today and it keeps finding the file "DE21.exe" and it cannot be completely removed. I've restarted and rescanned as McAfee suggests, but it's still there.

The file is located in e:/recycler/(insert a very long series of hyphenated numbers here)/DE21.exe .

Any suggestions?

This should be thre Recycle Bin on the Desktop. Delete anything in it. If not, then e:\ should not be hidden files, navigate to that file in red and manually delete it:

(Recycle Bin is protected and must be cleaned manually, programs may see it but Windows will not let them clean it)
