View Full Version : Very slow upload/download, timing out suspect malware (log included)
My internet connection appears excellent but pages take ages to load. Have been unable to download Adaware for this reason but did run Spybot, which took care of a few items but problem persists. Also, while trying to optimize startup was told by system that I am not the administrator, despite the fact that I am only user. Tried to rectify this and have been unsuccessful.

Hi,
Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:

Attach.txt
Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer to make sure it won't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
select
Advanced Mode
On the left hand side, click on Tools
Then click on the Resident icon in the list
Uncheck
Resident TeaTimer
and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer

Close all browser windows. After that, refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log & a fresh dds log. Are you now able to access Kaspersky online scanner site?
Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.
Thanks for the response. I'm not sure if I was able to disable McAfee during the scan -- let me know if there could be issues related to that.
I'm still not able to connect to the Kaspersky site, I've tried googling it and getting to the virus scan through different links. I'm also not able to connect to it through the other computer in the house which is unaffected as far as I know.

That's the original Kaspersky link I used - still not working.
I'm able to get on the ESET site, hit the scan button, agree to terms, and a box pops up but it has the little image box in it -- like what you'd see if an image couldn't be viewed, a small white box w/ little shapes in it. I was never prompted for ActiveX. After a very long wait, the status bar at the bottom said "Done", and the only change is that the image in the small white box is now a little red x. I checked the Program files folder to see if a log had been created in spite of the strange way it seemed to be running and there was nothing there call "Eset".
Any ideas? thanks!

You said that none of your systems can access Kaspersky site. Do you use a router (which model?) to connect internet from them?
Please follow instructions here (http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ht/ie7securitydef.htm) to reset IE7 security settings to defaults. Then try ESET scanner again.
Hello.. the modem is Linksys Comcast Home Networking Wireless-G Cable Gateway, Mode WCG200-CC. I connect via the wireless.
I'm now able to get to 99% of the installation of Eset then I get the message: "Can not get update. Is proxy configured?"
Not sure what this means..

That sounds like connection got cut off before download was finished. By looking at topic here (http://forums.linksys.com/linksys/board/message?board.id=Cable&thread.id=1970) it seems that model isn't very stable. If possible, you should try your connection with another model.
OK.. tried it again and the problem persists, took a look at Kaspersky again and it's still down as well. Do you have a recommendation for a similar product (wireless modem, I guess.. sorry, I'm illiterate in these matters!) that actually works reliably? Unfortunately this is all I have to work with at the moment. Thanks again.

One thing that I'd test is to reset the device to factory default settings. You should make sure that this correspondent computer only is connected to the router when doing the test. To reset, hold down the reset button for 30 seconds, pull the power cord for 1 minute, and then plug it back in. Login to router and change the password to stronger one.
If you have friends with suitable modem you could ask if you could borrow it for testing. Another way would be to test the modem with your friend's connection.
Hi -- I finally got the Eset scanner to run. I will post the logs when/if it completes -it's about 2/3 done now. thanks for the modem advice as well, will definitely give that a shot after this.
