View Full Version : Infected (maybe Zedo?) but Spybot won't run!
I was reading TheCustomerIsNotAlwaysRight when Internet Explorer seemed to be having trouble loading a page - it kept running something I think about zedo across the status area at the bottom of the page, where it generally will tell you # images left to download or what page is loading or whatnot. I became suspicious and closed the browser, but ran Norton AntiVirus with no issues and so went back online... where I started getting some fake windows security alerts and popups. Tried to run Spybot to find that it wouldn't load - Windows Task Manager says it's running as a process, but I have no user interface, even after a complete uninstall/reinstall with appropriate rebooting.
Just downloaded HJT (by typing the website into Internet Explorer myself - not through a click on a search engine), here's the log:

Thanks for taking a look! I'm a college student in the middle of final exams, so this is beyond stressful - I'm so grateful y'all are willing to help out like this.
Hi Anna O.
One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.
This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files
I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.
Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:
How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451)
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063)
We can attempt to clean this machine but i can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post
I noticed the infection almost immediately, assuming it happened when I think it did, and after downloading HJT disconnected from the internet. I reconnected to try to figure out what was going on with Spybot and to try a redownload, but after that I disconnected again and shortly thereafter turned off the computer completely, so it's maybe been on at most an hour since the infection, connected to the internet for less than that.
On your advice, I just changed my e-mail and banking info... am trying to think of what else may have been present on my machine, but I really do not have a whole lot of private business. I would like to salvage this if at all possible - I've got one quarter left in college after this, and it'd be real great to have my computer for paper-writing and whatnot. After that, I've got some time to think. Is there still increased vulnerability after a complete reformat? because I can totally do that over the summer. I just need this baby to make it 3 more months relatively as is, and I can avoid doing sensitive business on it until then (unless the hackers are really into stealing math proofs or essays on the role gender plays in science).
So yes, if we can clean this now that would be great.
OK, then we continue with this:
We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn''t interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you''re clean again:
1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
What if I cannot get Spybot to run?
What error message it gives?
Nothing. I click on it and, looking at the Task Manager it thinks it's running, but I have no visible interface to interact with... the only sign it's there is the .exe entry in the Task Manager running processes list whenever I try to open it. It only shows as a process, not a program.
Note: this is a fresh download of Spybot. I tried updating and then when that didn't work uninstalling and reinstalling when I found just after being infected that I couldn't get Spybot to open, but it seems neither alleviated the issue. I'm guessing the virus is suppressing it somehow.
I see.
Please then run combofix in safe mode and skip that TeaTimer part as for now.
Oh no! In safe mode, ComboFix on desktop as instructed. I click on it twice and nothing happens. I waited maybe 5 minutes and nothing happened. I hit Ctrl+Alt+Del to get the Task Manager, which show similar issue - the computer thinks ComboFix.exe is running as a process, but it has 00 under CPU and no visible interface appears.
In fact, everything has 00 as CPU except for
System Idle Process SYSTEM
which has 99.
Actually, now, watching the Task Manager with fewer items on it, I can notice that a) after maybe 10 minutes ComboFix.exe closed on its own and b) every few mintues iexplore.exe gets a little CPU attention, I assume that's the virus trying to access the internet (I'm completely unplugged though, it's not getting anywhere).
I downloaded ComboFix on a different computer and brought it to my desktop via USB key so I didn't have to connect my computer to the internet again. Is this an issue? It's still downloaded to the desktop, just with a few intermediate steps.
You could try to rename combofix before saving it to USB and let me know if it runs now.
OK, renaming it seems to allow it to run, but now Norton doesn't seem to want to go away, not matter how much I tell it to!
- From Safe Mode, it seems like it doesn't even start up, but starting ComboFix before anything else brings up a Malicious Script Alert that then freezes if I try to do anything.
- In Safe Mode if I open Norton, it says that it has limited capabilities and would I like to run a full system scan? No exits and again it seems like nothing is running, Yes starts a scan that doesn't find much. Then the screen is open but there's no sort of advanced options to disable or anything - limited capability. Closing this again makes it seem like it's not running anymore.
- In Normal Mode, I can go to the icon in the system tray as directed in the link from the ComboFix tutorial, and select disable for 5 hours, but then going back to Safe Mode brings back the same issues.
I notice that I could probably halt TeaTimer in Normal Mode through the Task manager. Could I then run the renamed ComboFix in Normal Mode with Norton disabled for 5 hours? or will TeaTimer start back up on its own and make issues?
Rather than worry about that, I just uninstalled Spybot (will reinstall when we're done with this), effectively disabling TeaTimer as it uninstalls as well, and am now successfully running the renamed ComboFix in Normal Mode. Will post results when it's done.
Side question: is there a way to be certain I'm safely transferring a notepad log via USB key, or is there no way to make sure I do not infect another computer with a key that's been in my computer? Would it be a less risky to reconnect to the internet just for a moment, and post the log from my computer directly, or load from a UBS the log onto another machine? Sorry I know so little about how current trojans work...
OK, scanned the file with AVG on my boyfriend's computer before opening it, hopefully this means it's safe. I suppose you'll hear soon if his computer is also infected. He's pretty sure nothing's going to happen though.

File is safe, yes.
You had rootkit which prevent certain programs from running.
Please see how to manually install recovery console from my link and rerun combofix afterwards and post back a fresh combofix log and a fresh hijackthis log.
Followed the instructions for Manual Installation, seemed to go fine, but 2 little things:
1) the first time I dragged the file into ComboFix it came up with an error message saying I cannot name ComboFix Banana and to pick another name consisting of alphanumeric characters. I changed it to Apple and tried again with no problem.
2) Combofix didn't restart my computer - I don't know if you need a restart to properly analyse the HJT logs or not, but let me know and I'll reboot and run a fresh HJT.

Thank you :)
Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.
Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select ''Run as administrator'' to perform this scan.
Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
If you need a tutorial, see here (http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/Bleeping/KAS/KAS9.gif)
So exciting to put this computer back online! I will disconnect again after posting this, though, just in case.

Empty these folders:
C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine
Empty Recycle Bin.
Still problems?
What exactly does it mean, to empty a folder? Do I want to delete the whole folder to the Recycle bin? Or select everything (including subfolders) and delete each individually to the Recycle Bin? Or something else entirely?
"Or select everything (including subfolders) and delete each individually to the Recycle Bin?"
Yes it means that :)
Delete everything inside folder but not folder itself.
Oh gosh! Sorry - I didn't notice we'd gone onto a third page, and so kept refreshing the second one waiting for a reply.
The computer seems good for now, although I've mostly been studying for an exam happening later today and so haven't been on it that much. I do not know a lot about how backdoors and trojans work aside from the very general idea of "they get in and let other things in, but themselves hide," and so your early mention of increased vulnerability on this machine until a reformat gives me pause... how much stuff did ComboFix take off, and just how vulnerable is my computer? Should I disconnect it from the internet all times I'm not using the internet? Should I try to avoid internet usage on that machine? Can the backdoor allow a hacker to see stuff that happened on my machine pre-infection, or is it only important I have no sensitive documents and no sensitive transactions on the computer from there on out? Is there a way to get sensitive information deleted from my computer such that a hacker via backdoor cannot find it, or is anything that was on the machine post-infection liable? I have used this computer for banking in the past, but can stop now; but I need to use this machine, at least for word processing, for three more months, and really would benefit from internet usage on it as well. How should I proceed from here?
(I of course know that you cannot tell me exactly the correct course of action and do not hold you responsible for and damage I may cause by following your advice - I'm just looking for more information from sources more expert than myself)
You had backdoor but that is now removed.
Your computer should be safe to use after all passwords have been changed. So no restrictions are needed.
