I haven't heard from anyone over at SBS&D yet, so I figured I'd add some more info in the hope that it would help find and fix the problems on this machine. Here's what I've done so far:
The machine was horribly infected with multiple trojans; it wouldn't even boot. I did a Windows upgrade using the original Windows disk. -That got it back in running order, but there were still a whole bunch of weird problems. I have no idea which virus/trojan caused the individual problems, but I set to work removing as many of them as I could.
As of today, I've succeeded in installing all the updates from Windows Update. I also have AVG Free and SB S&D running, most of the hardware drivers have been updated, and I've done many thorough scans for malware. Zlob.rtk is the last really nasty one, but there are 6 other ones that are mostly BHO style issues that don't seem like they are actually running. However, even though I think I've killed most of the malware programs, there ARE some serious problems left that are causing the machine to be unusable:
1). IMPORTANT! When copying a file from any folder to another folder, the new file has its permissions set to nothing, or 000, or ----------. This obviously causes any user to not be able to open, run, or even see the new file. -It's like the default permissions are being set outside of the standard Windows permissions model. I say this because normally the new file would simply inherit the permissions of the parent folder, but in this case, the parent is totally accessible, and the child becomes completely unavailable.
2). The machine restarts when the Shutdown command is given. This is not related to the Roxio restart problem from a few years ago...Roxio was never installed on this box.
3). Some programs open MUCH slower than they should. Photoshop takes about 1-2 minutes to open, whereas it used to take around 10-15 seconds. Once open, it runs fine, but opening takes forever.
4). InstallShield won't run.
5). Can't install Adaware (might be because InstallShield is not working).
6). Some simple system procedures don't work; for example, when you connect a digital camera to any of the USB ports, nothing happens.....nothing. Usually in this case a Photo wizard pops-up, and/or a "New Hardware Found" message pops-up, but now nothing happens.
-There are some other small things, but those are the worst offenders. I'm hoping that you folks can help me get this machine back to 100%. If you need anything, any kind of info about the system, please just ask me.
thank you very much for any help,
J
I would REALLY appreciate someone taking a look at this. It's very important that I get this machine back up and running.
Please, please, please lend me a hand asap.
thanks,
Jordan

Please, please, please lend me a hand asap.
thanks,
Jordan
