Hi, I got this alert about adaware-bdsearch and in the detection log it said that it cannot be repaired. The file is C:\**\appdata\local\temp\VE95E8b04168 and the process is C:\program files\java\jre1.6.0\bin\java.exe. Is this something to do with malware or McAfee just mistaking Java for something else?

Yes that is a false positive.
Let's take a look if there is something else:
Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.
Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select ''Run as administrator'' to perform this scan.
Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Though for my HJT there was a warning that stated the for some reason it was denied write access to the hosts file.

I have a few scanners myself and do regular scans, Adaware, Spybot, Malwarebytes and Spywareblaster, along with McAfee, as well as using the free online scanners like Housecall and Kaspersky. What I was worried about was anything hiding in the registry as I downloaded that Free Rip program and apparently it has spyware in it, I removed it and did all of those scans. When I restarted the machine after downloading it (before the scans), I couldn't get firefox working and had to redownload it after uninstalling everything including the mozilla profile. This was the time when McAfee detected and stopped a trojan (Generic PUP.z).
Though I also dowloaded an add-on to Firefox under Downloadhelper that lets you download videos to your mobile, after restarting the machine this was the time I had the problems with firefox, so I was thinking it was this. Since you don't see any problems then I'm not too worried, I guess I'll have to do some homework on this registry business.

I recommend that you uninstall eMusic Toolbar, it is open to debate.
Other than that, your log looks good.
Have you uninstall Java for some reason?

Yeah, I uninstalled Java then reinstalled when I did the Kaspersky scan, I did that just in case there was something hiding in there.

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTMoveIt3.exe).
Save it to your desktop.
Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
Click the red Moveit! button.
Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
Close OTMoveIt3
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Though, I have to say that in HJT on the results from the scan, nothing is mentioned about the eMusic toolbar, though if I go to the Main Menu and then to List of Backups, eMusic shows up there. I've tried deleting them from here and they don't seem to go anywhere.
Also, I went into regedit and found some Emusic Toolbar related stuff and delted them, it no longer shows up on the windows explorer, though I understand that this doesn't necessarily mean that the toolbar has been completely removed, unless these two logs above say otherwise.

Folder doesn't exist, registry entries are still there.
Please post next a fresh hijackthis log taken in normal mode.

Sorry about the tardiness but I've been having problems with my AOL and have had no success in fixing it, when I try to sign on I get blue screen. I tried one of those steps you recommended in your post about creating a standard UAC, I created one and then I deleted it and got this problem. I'm thinking about reformating to be honest and trying again from scratch. Do you have any advice on this, I have my vista recovery on a partition (D:\) and don't know how to reformat. Though I'm only considering this as whatever forums I've visited, they've all been useless.
