View Full Version : Re-directed IE pages and Very Slow Internet

I have followed the instructions in the "BEFORE you post ..." post.

Symptoms 1 and 2 started sometime within the past week or two.
1. When entering a familiar address in Internet Explorer, like eBay or other sites that we frequently visit, it sometimes re-directs us to other sites.
2. Internet Explorer takes progressively longer to call up sites, the more sites one visits, since the last reboot. After 30 minutes, or so of using IE, it becomes almost unusable because it takes several minutes for a page to load.
3. Frequently when exiting Spybot S&D after a scan, a dialog box pops up asking if I want to add one particular web site (which I do not recognize and is usually a questionable sounding name) to our trusted sites list. The particular site is not the same each time. This may be unrelated since it has been happening for a couple of months.
4. On boot, almost as soon as the system tray is visible, a Windows Security red shield with an X appears in the tray with a balloon that says "Your computer might be at risk. Norton Anti-Virus is turned off." I always have NAV turned on, including the real time protection. After about 2-3 minutes later, the NAV icon finally shows up in the tray and the above mentioned shield and balloon go away. NAV is nearly the last item to appear in the tray.
This has been this way for several months, maybe since installing NAV, but I just lived with it.
5. The hard drive light is on almost solid for 5-10 minutes after the Windows desktop shows up after a reboot. This has been happening for probably a couple of months.

I have attached the log from the Panda Active Scan and the HJT per the instructions.

hi photius,

dont see much in the log to be worried about. you have 4 anti-malware apps, (Spybot, spy catcher microsoft, spysweeper) really 2 woud be enough. i would uninstall at least 1 via add/remove programs panel.
before using hjt, please turn off any real time protection so it wont hinder hjt:

MS AntiSpyware (MSAS) Beta

1. Right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware icon in the system tray [it's the one with the red and yellow bulls-eye].
2. Click on "Security Agents Status".
3. Click on "Disable real-time protection".

Next right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware icon in the system tray again to open Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

1. Click on the Options menu and choose Settings.
2. In the left pane column click on "Real Time Protection".
3. Under Startup Options, uncheck "Enable (MSAS) Security Agents on startup (recommended)"
4. Under Real-time spyware threat protection, uncheck and "Enable real-time spyware threat protection" (recommended).
5. Click the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Finally, right-click on the MSAS icon in the system tray and select "Shutdown Microsoft Antispyware".

Spybot S&D (Teatimer)

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.

SpySweeper

1. Open Spysweeper and click on Options > Program Options and uncheck "load at windows startup".
2. On the left click "shields" and then uncheck everything there.
3. Uncheck "home page shield".
4. Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".
5. Exit the program.

----------------------------------------------------------
run hjt:
scan with HJT, put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click fix checked.

Thanks, shelf life! I greatly appreciate your help! I'm sorry it's taken so long to get back. Work and home have both been crazy.

Web pages are noticeably not as slow to load now, though not quite what one would call quick.

1. It still take about 7-8 minutes to finish a boot to the point that the HD light is not on solid.
2. During Spybot S&D scans, almost always (maybe always), a Windows AntiSpyware Notice pops up stating "A new Internet Explorer Trusted Site requires your approval". I always click Block because the site name listed is usually something that does not sound good. Just now it was "1-extreme.biz".

What do you think?

I shut down the realtime protection as you instucted previously and ran HJT. Here is the new log:

BTW,
The C:\Program Files\SpyCatcher 2006 directory listed in the HJT log above does not exist and the program does not show up in Add-Remove Programs.

rescan once with ewido and save the report it generates and post that in next reply.

for slow booting, check down by clock, see alot of icons? click and see what they are, look around in options/preferences not to start with windows. check startup items in msconfig, only few really need to be checked, one is your AV, others can be started manually when needed see this website, if not sure about a item, leave it checked:

http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
http://alri.org/step2/usingmsconfig.htm

have a look here:
C:\Program Files and delete the SpyCatcher 2006 folder if present.

try this for dumping temp files:
ATF cleaner (W2K,XP only) (http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/) cleans out temp files, history etc

Im Glad we could help
Since the problems are solved Im going to close the topic now, this keeps others with similar problems from posting there logs/question here, they should start a new topic.
If you should need to post another log for the same PC let Me or Tashi know.
