Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.
Hi slocsin and welcome to Safer Networking :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
Next:

Lets carry out a more in-depth scan of your computer first before any proactive measures OK as follows:

Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) and save it to your desktop.

Please make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application.

Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open:

log.txt will be opened maximized.
info.txt will be opened minimized.

Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

Any problems encountered and or further symptoms?
Both RSIT logs. <-- Post them individually please.

Hi,

I downloaded rsit.exe to my desktop. After starting the application, I accept the disclaimer. I then receive the following error message "Line -1: Error: Variable used without being declared." and then the application quits.

I hope you can help me...

Thanks,
Susan

Not a problem and you took the correct course of action with informing myself :bigthumb: Please carry out the following:

DDS:

Please download to your desktop DDS from one of the links below:

Link1 (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds)
Link2 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr)
Link3 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds)

Double click the tool to run it.
A black Screen will open, just read the contents and do nothing.
When the tool finish it will open 2 reports.
Copy/paste both reports back here and remove DDS from your desktop.

Note: Two logfiles will be generated with Notepad: DDS.txt and Attach.txt

When completed the above, please post back the following:

Any problems encountered and or further symptoms?
Both DDS logs. <-- Post them individually please.

Hi :)

I received 'not enough main memory to run sort' while running the application
OK not to worry lets see what we can do to remedy the situation as follows:

A question for your good self. Is this Computer part of a network and or a business machine? Or just used for personal use only?

Only reason asking is it appears the software firewall in use is: Microsoft Firewall Client 2004

Next:

Please download to your Desktop FixPolicies.exe, a self-extracting ZIP archive from here (http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/BillCastner/FixPolicies.exe)

Double-click FixPolicies.exe.
Click the "Install" button on the bottom toolbar of the box that will open.
The program will create a new Folder called FixPolicies.
Double-click to Open the new Folder, and then double-click the file within: Fix_Policies.cmd.
A black box should briefly appear and then close.
Create a System Restore Point:

Click on Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> System Restore.
Check Create a restore point and click on Next.
Under Restore Point Description, type in SN Backup and click on Create.
When informed Restore point created, click on Close.
You now have a restore point as a backup.
Next:

Please download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

Right click on CA Antivirus icon near the clock (a shield).
Click on CA Anti-Virus > Snooze Anti-Virus Protection.
When prompted, enter in 30 and click on Snooze.
Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a HijackThis log so we can continue cleaning the system.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

Any problems encountered and or further symptoms ?
Answer to my software firewall query etc.
ComboFix Log.
A new HijackThis Log.

Hi :)

Is this your own personal Laptop or does it belong to the University?

I would like to view a list of currently installed software applications on the PC. How to provide as follows:

Run HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section.

Click Open Uninstall Manager...
Click Save list... and save it to your Desktop.
Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.

Hi :)

This is my own personal tablet PC that I tack from home to school...
Absolutely fine then Susan :bigthumb:

Don't know what firewall I should be using...
The one currently in use is fine and might be I suspect a stipulation of your University's IT Dept concerning students personal computers being attached to the LAN/WAN so we will leave that in place.

For the remaining of the malware removal process we are going to have to employ some different methodology as it appears the Pharos Systems software for connecting your computer the University's printers is causing some problems.

OK take your time with the below it may seem daunting but I have every confidence you will do just fine.

Next:

Older Java installations pose a security risk and a back-door for malware to re-infect a system.

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java(TM) 6 Update 12
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

New Java Installation:

Click here (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) to visit Java's website.
Scroll down to Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13. Click on Download.
Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
Click on jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
Double click on jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe to install Java.

Next:

Please re-open HiJackThis and select Scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below (if present):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://msw/
O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://msw

Now click on Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

Next click Start >> Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK.

Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin are checked.
You can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Click on OK then Yes.
Now Reboot(restart) your computer.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.

Alternate download link (http://majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html).

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post that log in your next reply.
The log can also be found here:

Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Click on the Logs radio tab.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Next:

Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop:

Download Mirror #1 (http://jpshortstuff.247fixes.com/GooredFix.exe)
Download Mirror #2 (http://downloads.securitycadets.com/GooredFix.exe)

Double-click GooredFix.exe to run it.
Select 1. Find Goored (no fix) by typing 1 and pressing Enter.
A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredLog.txt).
Note: Do not run Option #2 yet.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

Any problems encountered and or further symptoms ?
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log.

1) I had problems uninstalling the java components - the exact error was erased during the reboot, but it could not uninstall - see your support personnel for further assistance. This might have been caused by me deleting the java directories last week.

I did not install the java update - i don't think I need it anymore

Hi :)

1) I had problems uninstalling the java components - the exact error was erased during the reboot, but it could not uninstall - see your support personnel for further assistance. This might have been caused by me deleting the java directories last week.

I did not install the java update - i don't think I need it anymore
OK that is fine RE Java, however just to be on the safe side there is a small application I will be asking your good self to download and run which will remove any remnants of Java.

Now Please delete both GooredFix and GooredLog.txt, then empty your Recycle Bin.

JavaRA:

Please download JavaRa (http://majorgeeks.com/JavaRa_d5967.html) and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***

Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.
Backup the Registry:

Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

Please navigate to Start >> All Programs >> ERUNT

Click on OK within the pop-up menu.
In the next menu under C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\DD-MM-YYYY under Backup options make sure both the following are selected:
System registry
Current user registry
Next click on OK
When the Question pop-up appears click on Yes
After a short duration the Registry backup is complete! popup will appear
Now click on OK. A backup has been created.
Next:

Please download OTMoveIT3 (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTMoveIt3.exe) to your Desktop.

Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to start the program.
Copy the lines from the codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + B (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

:processes
explorer.exe

:Files
c:\windows\system32\..\wnlnbh.stf

:Reg
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\drivers32]
"aux"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mozilla\Firefox\extensions]
"C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\lib\deploy\jqs\ff"=-

:Commands
[EmptyTemp]
[Start Explorer]
[Reboot]
Return to OTMoveIt3, right-click in the "Paste instructions for items to be moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste
Then click the red MoveIt! button.
Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of it and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy), and paste it into your next response.
If OTMoveIt asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
Close OTMoveIt3.
BitDefender Online Scan:

Please perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at this website (http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html).

Under SCANNING OPTIONS, use the following Settings:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/BitDefenderB.gif
Action options - Report only
Second option - Report only

Once finished, click on "Click here to export the scan results"

Save the report to your desktop, then post those results in your next reply.

When completed the above, please post back the following individually if the need:

How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms?
JavaRA Log.
OTMoveIT3 Log.
BitDefender scan results.
A new HijackThis Log.

Machine seems to be okay. The bitdefender program didn't have the options that yous should. Otherwise, all went fine...

Thanks

Hi :)

Machine seems to be okay. The bitdefender program didn't have the options that yous should. Otherwise, all went fine...

Thanks
SusanOK good to know RE your computer and you're welcome! Thanks for the update also regarding BitDefender Online Scan, I will look into that :bigthumb:

I primarily use firefox as my browser, but must use ie for a couple of functions that don't work elsewhere...
Absolutely fine. However say for example when visiting Microsoft Update(see below also) it would be better to use Internet Explorer.

OK please delete the following if still present and any associated logs generated:

DDS and FixPolicies.exe then empty your Recycle Bin.

Next:

Congratulations your computer now appears to be malware free!

Now I have some tasks for your good self to carry out as part of a clean up process and some advice about online safety.

Importance of Regular System Maintenance:

I advice you read both of the below listed topics as this will go a long way to keeping your Computer performing well.

Help! My computer is slow! (http://http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html)

Also so is this:

What to do if your Computer is running slowly (http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutorials/runningslowly.php)

Uninstall ComboFix:

Click on Start >> Run...
Now type in Combofix /u in the and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png
Clean up with OTMoveIt3:

Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to start the program.
Close all other programs apart from OTMoveIt3 as this step will require a reboot
On the OTMoveIt main screen, press the CleanUp! button
Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.
Now some advice for on-line safety:

Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware:

This is a excellent application and I advise you keep this installed. Check for updates and run a scan once a week.

Other installed security software:

Your presently installed combination Antivirus application, CA eTrust automatically checks for updates and downloads/installs them with every system reboot and or periodically if the machine is left running providing a internet connection is active.

I advise you also run a complete scan with this also once per week.

Erunt:

Emergency Recovery Utility NT, I advice you keep this installed as a means to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.

Myself I would actually create a new back up once per week as this along with System Restore may prove to be invaluable if something unforeseen occurs!

Keep your system updated:

Microsoft releases patches for Windows and other products regularly:

I advise you visit: http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
Install the Active X
Once installed it will advise set Auto-Updates if not set and you then you will be able to manually check for updates also via:
Start >> All Programs >> Microsoft Updates
Be careful when opening attachments and downloading files:

Never open email attachments, not even if they are from someone you know. If you need to open them, scan them with your antivirus program before opening.
Never open emails from unknown senders.
Beware of emails that warn about viruses that are spreading, especially those from antivirus vendors. These email addresses can be easily spoofed. Check the antivirus vendor websites to be sure.
Be careful of what you download. Only download files from known sources. Also, avoid cracked programs. If you need a particular program that costs too much for you, try finding free alternatives on Sourceforge (http://sourceforge.net/) or Pricelessware (http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/).
Stop malicious scripts:

Windows by default allow scripts (which is VBScript and JavaScript) to run and some of these scripts are malicious. Use Noscript (http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/noscript.exe) by Symantec or Script Defender (http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/system/sdefend.htm) by AnalogX to handle these scripts.

Make your Internet Explorer safer:

For Internet Explorer 7

Please read this article (http://surfthenetsafely.com/ieseczone8.htm) to configure Internet Explorer 7 properly.

Note: Internet Explorer v8 has been recently released from its beta program, my advice hold off upgrading for the time being as no doubt flaws will be identified and fixes released over the coming months.

Avoid Peer to Peer Software:

P2P may be a great way to get lots of seemingly freeware, but it is a great way to get infected as well. There's no way to tell if the file being shared is infected. Worse still, some worms spread via P2P networks, infecting you as well. My advice avoid these types of software applications.

Hosts File:

A Hosts file is like a phone book. You look up someone's name in the phone book before calling him/her. Similarly, your computer will look up the website's IP address before you can view the website.

Hosts file will replace your current Hosts file with another one containing well-known advertisement sites, spyware sites and other bad sites. This new Hosts file will protect you by re-directing these bad sites to 127.0.0.1.

Here are some Hosts files:

MVPS Hosts File (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
Bluetack's Hosts File (http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=8406)
Bluetack's Host Manager (http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php?autocom=faq&CODE=02&qid=16)
hpHosts (http://hphosts.mysteryfcm.co.uk/?s=Download).
Only use one of the above.

Note: At present you are using a custom Host File that is part of your University's protocol for connecting to their LAN/WAN, you may wish to inquire if it is OK to use one I have advised. Feel free to show a member of your University's IT Dept' this topic and my recommendations.

Finally a educational source:

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein:

So how did I get infected in the first place? (http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=4959)

Some consider this article outdated, personally I still think it bares relevance and the author is well respected in the Anti-Malware community and by myself also!

Any questions ? feel free to ask, if not stay safe!

Hi :)

Many, many thanks
You're welcome!

Could you give me a brief description / explanation as to what was wrong with my system?
By all means off course I will.

Basically your system was infected with a few different variations of malware that was causing the search engine redirection. Some were of a Adware (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/community/columns/adware.mspx) nature but the main infections were Trojan downloaders. Specifically some in the Daonol (http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/viruses-and-spyware/trojdaonolfam.html) family which has made a bit of a resurgence of late.

As infections go not the worst but if you had not asked for assistance the end result could very well have resulted in a very severely infected system that may have become compromised. Is that not oh so pleasant of the malware creators, some are merely out to create money via their criminal activity's. Others take some form of perverse pleasure from destroying systems.

Any other questions ? feel free to ask, if not stay safe!
