Hi,

My home computer runs windows xp sp2, and i've just come back from uni to find that my family have been only able to use the internet in safe mode for the last month, in normal mode it refuses to connect and is running very slowly. I ran a spybot virus scan which brought up some problems, and said it fixed them but the problem persists. I've no doubt the problem is spyware, i've included a HJT log.

Thanks,

David.

Hi,

Welcome to the Safer Networking. My name is muuli. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research. Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic. Please stay at one forum for help.
3. Please continue reading posts until I give the All Clear. It is important to note this, as a clean looking HijackThis is not always a sign your system is clean.

Note: I am still in training at Malware Removal, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

Hi,

Step 1

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html) - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (http://free.grisoft.com/ww.homepage) - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

You should run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and results in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

Step 2

You have old version of HijackThis, please download new version(2.02) and rename it at next step...

Click here (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe) to download HJTInstall.exe
Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Close HijackThis now.

Step 3

Rename HijackThis.exe to midgetmurgia.exe by doing the following;

Navigate here using Windows Explorer (windows button + E) or My Computer -> Local Disk C: -> C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
Right-click on the HijackThis.exe
Choose from the pull-down menu; "Rename"
And now Rename HijackThis.exe to midgetmurgia.exe
When you've renamed HijackThis, open HijackThis again.
Take a fresh HijackThis log (click Do a system scan and save a log file)
Post the fresh HijackThis log here.

Step 4

If you already have Smitfraudfix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.

Please download SmitFraudFix.exe (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe) by S!Ri and save it to the desktop.

If you can't download it, please download it from these alternative sites:

From Geekstogo (http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.exe)
From Security Cadets (http://downloads.securitycadets.com/SmitfraudFix.exe)
From Zebulon (http://telechargement.zebulon.fr/259-smitfraudfix.html)

Double click on SmitfraudFix.exe.
Press 1 then hit the Enter key.
It will create a report named rapport.txt, usually at C drive.
Please post back this log in your next reply.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Read more here (http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm)

Step 5

Please post a fresh HijackThis log and Smitfraudfix log.

Hi,

Step 1

Please copy this set of instructions or print it out as you will not have internet access during the fix.

Restart the computer in Safe Mode

:!: Let me know if you can't boot into Safe Mode. Do not continue with the fixes.

When you see the BIOS screen, start pressing F8.
A boot menu will appear shortly.
Using the up down arrows, select Safe Mode and press the Enter key.
Windows will now load.
Log in to your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe.

Press 2 and press Enter to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?; press Y and press Enter in order to start cleaning the cleaning process. Your desktop will be gone for a while cleaning.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You will be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); press Y and press Enter.

The tool will restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart manually into Normal Mode.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy and paste the contents of that report into your next reply. The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note to users: Running option 2 on a clean machine will remove your desktop background.

Step 2

Please produce uninstall list:
Open HijackThis.
Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
Look under System tools.
Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
Click on the Save list... button.
It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

Step 3

We will begin with ComboFix. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
C:\ComboFix.txt

A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Step 4

Now, please run HijackThis in normal mode...

Please post the following logs/reports:
HijackThis log.
Combofix log.
Uninstall list.

Hi,

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451)

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063)

We can attempt to clean this machine but i can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

My strong personal recommendation is to reformat as that is what I would do if it was my computer.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

And something about P2P softwares...

First, please read Safer Networking's P2P Programs policy (http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=25290&postcount=4)

If you choose to reformat your computer, then I really hope that you won't use P2P programs in future because the P2P programs are probably the cause of your computer being infected. I hope that you understand it's NOT a safe to use P2P programs.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

hi,

not sure I can actually reformat the pc as it came preloaded with windows etc when bought and i don't have any of the relevant disks for the os, drivers etc. The internet is now working in normal mode after the previous fixes. I will however disconnect it from the internet from now on. i have no intention of using p2p programs, my younger siblings i'm sure caused this problem by using them irresponsibly when i was away and unable to supervise, and i will remove them and advise them to desist.

if we could just try to remove the trojans, then i would be happy to continue using this computer as a home pc, and internet on others.

thanks for your help so far,

David.

Hi,

Okay... We have to remove P2P programs before we continue.

Step 1

Click on Start > Control Panel and double click on Add/Remove Programs.
Locate BitLord 1.1 and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it.
Repeat for LimeWire 4.10.9.
Close Add/Remove Programs and Control Panel.

Step 2

Please produce new uninstall list:
Open HijackThis.
Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
Look under System tools.
Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
Click on the Save list... button.
It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

Step 3

Please post a fresh HijackThis log and Uninstall list.

Hi,

Next you have to install Recovery Console because if any conflicts appear after Combofix, as Recovery Console can be only way to repair the computer.
Please read the following instruction carefully and install Recovery Console, How to use Combofix (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)

I asked to install it before but you didn't... And if you have any problems to install Recovery Console, please let me know.

Please post a fresh HijackThis log and Combofix log in your next reply.
