This is after following the before-you-post procedure above. Before getting to this point I have run S&D 1.6.2 several times, latest after turning off TeaTimer and restarting. Each time, S&D reports detection and successful cleaning of two or so flavors of Virtumonde, but then I continue to have the pop-ups, etc. Accordingly, here's the HJT-log. Please let me know if I've omitted any steps and I'll revisit the procedure and do whatever I need to do. Thank you.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

Download ComboFix from here:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Tutorial if needed
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP,
Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)

Thank you for your reply. I will absolutely follow your instructions, but think I need to make you aware first of something I discovered last night in the process of researching this problem further while waiting.

I started looking at the security clean-up posts at Broadband Reports, and saw their start-of-resolution procedures included using some freeware malware detection-and-removal tools as a first step. Seeing nothing in the Spybot forum indicating that I should not do this, I ran MBAM, the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, and the newest version of AdAware (MBAM and AdAware found and removed some entries). I also ran the online free Housecall version of TrendMicro's AV scan, which also found and (claims to have) removed a couple of entries.

Now here's the problem: I tried to install Windows Defender, but was unable to because it requires Administrator authority; in the process I discovered that there's an Administrator ID on my computer, that has a password that I don't know because I didn't create it or reset it or whatever. That's what I wanted to make you aware of: I don't know if ComboFix requires Administrator authority or not, but if it does, I'm going to need to get that solved first. And in any case, I'm going to have to ask for some help resolving that issue, whether it's before or after the virus removal.

Thanks for patience, please advise.

Posted at the top of this Malware Removal forum are pinned (sticky) items that are posted there for you.
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288 <<< DIRECTIONS

Until a helper responds, the HJT log has not been analyzed. Please wait to be advised and do NOT run fixes until asked.

If you have passwords set on your computer that you did not set, you might want to consider a reformat. You are never going to know the computer is safe otherwise.

http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/reformat/
http://www.cyberwalker.net/faqs/how-tos/reinstall-faq.html
http://helpdesk.its.uiowa.edu/windows/instructions/reformat.htm

Optional would be to ask Microsoft for help/advice:
http://support.microsoft.com/

I don't know if this information will help you or not?

Please follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

c:\windows\system32\wimesabi.exe

Save this as CFScript

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://127.0.0.1:4664/&s=4z13dAnWMwKCWSxE7SWFres9L3Y
O2 - BHO: Browser Address Error Redirector - {CA6319C0-31B7-401E-A518-A07C3DB8F777} - C:\Program Files\BAE\BAE.dll
(http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2007/05/googles-browser-address-error.html) <<< information

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

(No need to download MBAM since you have it but it is important that you update the program and run it as instructed)

5) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

How is the computer running now?

Thanks

This can be done as time permits, but it is important, and may be why you are infected.
Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Adobe Flash Player ActiveX
Adobe Flash Player Plugin
Adobe recommends all users of Adobe Flash Player 10.0.12.36 and earlier versions upgrade to the newest version 10.0.22.87

Adobe Reader 8 <<< out of date and unsafe, see this:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/
(if you want a smaller program, look at this one)
Foxit Reader 2.3 for Windows (make sure to uncheck any toolbars)
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6
Both are out of date and unsafe, see this:

As to how the computer is running, the short answer is that it appears to be just fine. The longer answer, if you have time, includes two observations that are interesting at least to me:
1) the Administrator user I mentioned above, that I didn't establish and didn't know a password for, is now gone and my own user appears to be back to having administrator privileges. This change occurred after the first ComboFix run. I haven't tried again to install Windows Defender yet, but will do so when/if you give me the all-clear
2) the screen-changes (different color-scheme in the system-tray and on the bottom-of-the-screen taskbar) are now reverted back to the way they were before this all happened. I expected to have to go back and manually change them back, but they reverted to normal after, I think, the MBAM run? Anyway, within the last 3-or-so steps.

Thank you, I will examine your follow-up notes from the previous posts and get some stuff updated or removed. Please let me know if you believe we're done now, or if there's more.

I am a Floridian watching Discovery come home, about 27 minutes until touchdown. As soon as she is on the ground I will review your information and post the next steps.

When the malware is removed, the settings usually return to normal. This is not always the case, so keep an eye open for anything changed by the malware that did not return to normal.
After having a look at your HJT log, especially Running Processes, I will post information not related to the malware that will improve the computers performance if applied.

Let's see if we can wrap up like this:

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, update it and run it once a month or so)

Update AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean.

If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close the topic.

Thanks for your help. I will go through your closing instructions and perform them, but just had a disturbing event I need to make you aware of in case it changes your evaluation of my system's condition. I had uninstalled SpywareGuard when this problem began because it vomited up so many BHO alerts that I couldn't do anything at all on the system, including start much of a FireFox session. I reinstalled it a few minutes ago and all seemed well, UNTIL I went to Filehippo and downloaded the Adobe Reader 9.something --- the latest one. I ran the install and toward the end of it, SG kicked out yet another BHO alert referencing the Adobe Reader program I was installing. Thankfully, it only did one this time and when I told it to remove the BHO I had no further upsetting messages.

What does that do to your thoughts about my next move?

Again, thanks for your help with my machine.

I run SpywareGuard (and SpywareBlaster) myself and have for years. It may have been all of the changes we made that it was seeing. I suggest you double click SG and when the interface opens click File at the top then Exit. It will be returned to the System Tray when you restart the computer. If you are not finished, exit it each time until you are finished with the instructions, then allow it to remain in the System Tray to monitor for you. Once everything is done, post a new HJT log so I can take a look. Include anything else you think I should know.

Couple of good tutorials for you:

Shut the machine down while we went to dinner, returned to find that the desktop again has that "odd" color-scheme with the wrong Taskbar and SystemTray colors. At this point I feel the need to run MBAM again, run a full S&D scan again, run another AntiVir scan, (at least those things) and see what they turn up and get rid of, and see if I can get back to the point where the thing reliably boots to what looks like the "right" screen. Will be grateful for any suggestions you may have, but that's my current plan prior to continuing with removing any of the tools you had me install.

Would you please exit SpywareGuard and complete the instructions I posted in post #9. Once you follow those directions, post the results of the two scans (unless they are clean) and the HJT log I requested in post #11.

Thank you

OK, will do that. Another "oddity": in trying to turn off System Restore, I get to the point of the right-click on System Properties and get the following error message several times: (the message is: "The procedure entry point 01 May 2008 00:00:49 GMT X-N: S Cache-Control: max-age=86400 Date: Fri,30 May 2008 20:29:50 GMT could not be located in the dynamic link library msvcrt.dll", the dialog-bos titlebar says "rundll32.exe - Entry Point Not Found"). I continue through the 4 or 5 iterations of that and finally the Properties display comes up. I choose System Restore and set it as you say, press Apply, and get: "System restoer encountered an error trying to enable/disable one or more drives. Please restart your machine and try again".

We have to step out for a short while again, will continue working with this when we return, will attempt to continue with this System Restore stuff unless you have other thoughts. Thanks.

Was not able to resolve the System Restore problem yet, nor the Rundll32.exe problem. Both are going to take some time to pursue, apparently.

Proceeded with what I could do, ran MBAM (no trouble found), ran AntiVir (report attached below, but essentially no trouble found), ran HijackThis again per instructions, log attached below AntiVir report.

Desktop color scheme still screwy, System Restore issue still exists, however unidentified "Administrator" user id is still gone and my own id still has Administrator privileges. I'm now able to install Windows Defender, have done so and am now running full scan with that product. Will advise if anything shows up. Thank you.

Was not able to resolve the System Restore problem yet, nor the Rundll32.exe problem. Both are going to take some time to pursue, apparently.
Information posted like this does not help. Before you posted so much information it was hard to discern the actual error message. Keep in mind when this occurs that Windows presents you with a error message. Please post that error message "word for word", there is no need to post additional information. Once I research the error message, if I need more information from you, I will request it.

It would also be helpful if you would follow the directions I post and then report back about any issues. Once I am out of your way you may do as you wish.

I would like you to point your mouse at combofix on the Desktop and right click, then choose delete. Once that is done, please download a fresh copy of combofix from here:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

Run combofix as you did before, then post that log for me to view.

Recap:
combofix log
error messages "word for word"

My apologies. I misunderstood #15 and thought you wanted me to research the message.

Exact message: "The procedure entry point 01 May 2008 00:00:49 GMT X-N: S Cache-Control: max-age=86400 Date: Fri, 30 May 2008 20:29:50 GMT could not be located in the dynamic link library msvcrt.dll".

Titlebar of message: rundll32.exe - Entry Point Not Found

After I go through several of these I get the My Computer dialog. When I then try to turn off System Restore, I get this exact message: "System Restore encountered an error trying to enable/disable one or more drived. Please restart your machine and try again".

"It would also be helpful if you would follow the directions I post and then report back about any issues." Again, my apologies, I thought I did that, am not sure what directions I missed?
1) uninstalled ComboFix with the /u switch, as instructed, apparently successful;
2) attempted to turn off System Restore, unsuccessfully as reported
3) continued on and ran MBAM and AntiVir, no trouble found

Have now re-downloaded ComboFix and rerun it, log posted above.

Keep in mind this is a malware removal forum, it looks like you recently (2009-03-09 08:07) tried to recover from major issues with this download from Microsoft.

It is very likely you are going to need to reinstall Windows to recover from whatever the problem was you used that method to recover from. I would suggest System File Checker (http://dwightblackburn.com/winxp/)
but it is likely the Microsoft tool would have corrected the problem if it could be corrected.

Optional would be to contact Microsoft Support to see what they suggest:
http://support.microsoft.com/

Please remove combofix from the computer:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Actually, no, I didn't try to recover from anything anywhere around that timeframe nor at any other recent time until this problem arose. The only thing I was doing on 3/9/09 at 8:09 AM (presumably Eastern) was logging on to check the day's news before going to work.

Files Created from 2009-02-28 to 2009-03-29 <<< have a look at the files created between those dates. I have done about all I can to help and suggest ask for help from here: http://support.microsoft.com/ or at a forum that deals with Windows XP issues, here are a couple of good ones:
