search and destroy was loading and then stopped; the loading bar is on my screen showing all but the last square filled in, and is frozen - I cannot reduce it, close it, or open it. It has been this way for 18 hours.

What Operating System are you running?
Have you tried uninstalling Spybot?
Then proceed to download a fresh copy at:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

So basically uninstall>reboot>install.
Thanks for the response. I am running windows XP, and am not knowledgeable about computers. I will try to do as you say.
