Computer seems to be infected. I was troubleshooting an infected pc and used a flash drive to transfer logs to the clean pc to upload to this forum. IE will run normally for about 5 minutes but then will stop responding. MA anti-malware also stops responding after an all clear message. Also access to most spyware removal sites is denied. When I first ran an anti-malware scan I had 18 items which I removed, these returned and were removed again. Now showing clear but I'm not conviced it is a true negative. I have had to retype all the above as the pc is not responding. I will post an HJT log once I have restarted the infected pc. My previous thread will give more detail of other items that were removed, one was a proxy override, and 01-Hosts:74.208.77.54 hcurltest1 and 01-Hosts: 82.165.61.232 hcurltest2...both pointing to Schlund + partner AG in Germany . I tried to start in safe mode with networking to run ESET, but got an error message which seemed common on forums. I tried Trend Micro house call but it stopped responding half way through and combofix, but after the blue timing bar ran nothing happened. It seems that there is something in here that is determined to block all removal attempts....help!!

Ken

When I try to run the scan it hangs on C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe...

I opened the task manager and it shows two OTListIt2 programs....both not responding

This is the problem I've been having when I try to scan, it seems programs are being prevented from running.

Just completed while I was typing....thats odd:

Hello Mark,

I have limited internet access where I am so will get back to you later on this evening, in the meantime we need to start over fresh, run these scans even if you have run them before.

Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html) or Here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe)

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.<-- Don't forget this
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

You can try running them in Safemode if your computer keeps shutting down.

To Enter Safemode

Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode with Networking
Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard

Ken

Did the ATF cleaner.

I already had MA anti-malware installed so tried to run that. receieved an error message that it had encountered a problem and needs to close. I deleted the old version , restarted the pc and downloaded a new version.

I got the same message.

Should I try it in safe mode?

Ken

Did the MA Anti-malware scan in safe mode and it came back clean after only 3 minutes. (not sure I trust it) will post it when all done.

Combofix was already installed on computer, but when I tried to run it the blue bars ran accross the box then nothing. I dragged the desktop icon into the recycle bin and will try to download and install and run again.

Should I have all the internet addresses of all sites I usually visit still there?...I thought ATF cleaner would remove all.

Also I looked in add/remove programs to see if combofix was there and saw My Way Search Assistant....that shouldnt be there should it?

Malwarebytes. <-- Did you check for updates??

Combofix <-- Drag it to the trash and download a new copy to your desktop, then right click on it and rename it to Combo-Fix

Combofix will not be in your Add Remove but and updated version of Malwarebytes will remove MyWebSearch

Yes, run these in Safemode if need be

Sorry Ken the posts must have crossed. I did install a new version of MA anti-malware and did check for updates prior to doing the scan that came up negative.

Did as you said with ComboFix, but still wont run even in safe mode, with or without networking.

Downloaded a 3rd version of Ma anti-malware, same thing, even in safe mode. 3 min scan negative

In safe mode cant even use the keys on the keyboard to typle....enter, up, down etc ok....I'll post this from this pc then send the HJT log from the other once rebooted.

WinCodecPro <--This may be what you have

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Boot your computer into Safemode

Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
This will bring up a menu.
Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
Then press the Enter on your Keyboard

Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial61.html)

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart into normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Reboot normally.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

Post the log from Smitfraud fix

Ken

Had to bite the bullet on this one and Re-install Operating System. Now just trying to put together missing parts!

Thanks for the help.

A friend who helped me do the sytem install had seen a similar thing at work a few days prior, and did a reinstall there, silly girl running a laptop with no antivirus sofyware! so I guess there is something out there. If I find out more I'll post.

So far so good after the re-install.

Thanks for your time and help. Hopefully we can come up with something on the other pc, because would rather not burn the midnight oil again with another system re-install.

Best of luck

Mark

Thats great your up and running, sorry you had to go through a reinstall , but with the garbage going around nowadays sometimes its the best option.

How did I get infected in the first place ?
Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Dslreports (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10002)

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn
