Apparent virus won't allow me to run tools

I noticed yesterday that my browser search results were being redirected to other sites. Then my computer started locking up. I ran a scan with Trend Micro Office Scan and it found a few things but didn't help.

I tried to install and run Spybot and malwarebytes but I was either unable to install or unable to run once installed. In either case, the process showed up in task manager but was not visibile to me the user. This was even the case in safe mode.

I would appreciate help on a recommended course of action.

Understood. It wasn't clear after hunting around for about 5 minutes what to do so I just took a shot at posting.
