View Full Version : Google links redirected 10% of the time

Hey everyone. A while back, while web browsing, my computer randomly started disk thrashing like crazy before I got a notice from some sort of fake tool called Spyware Protect 2009 (or something like that) warning me about all sorts of viruses that I didn't have.

I then used malwarebytes to get rid of this thing. However, my search results were still occasionally redirected. Looking into my Hijack this log, I found three mystery DLLs that were obviously random names, and all of which prevented their deletion from the registry. One was hiding in a macromedia folder, and two in C:\windows. I managed to remove all three using a combination of AVG and Hijackthis's delete this upon reboot option.

It's worth noting that one of these DLLs was a Vundo variant, though I didn't have any of the more annoying vundo symptoms like blocked web pages.

Interestingly, the entire suite of antivirus tools at Jotti was unable to detect one of the DLLs, despite the fact that this DLL was capable of putting itself back in the registry. Maybe that's all it did, so none of the heuristics could see it, or maybe it really was some new virus.

However, I've noticed that even after all that my search results are still getting redirected about 10% of the time. I'm not sure if it's only google links or what, but basically everything looks normal, but as soon as I click a link, I end up at another search result on one of those stupid spam portals for the same search.

My computer exhibits no other strange symptoms. Windows update is fine, no antivirus tools or websites are being blocked. Spybot, AVG, and AdAware couldn't find anything.

My HijackThis log is below. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Pinned (sticky) to the top of this forum, and posted above are the directions, make sure you have read and followed them.

You do have some issues, if you want to take a look, start like this.

1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

2) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Post the C:\rapport.txt

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
